Proud to say I played during that era. None of this "roll away" and "release the ball" bullshit. If you slowed down the ball by going offside, somebody is going to put boots on you, and throwing punches was "legal" if the ref didn't see it.
Punches were legal if everybody had a go. Then they got on with 1 of the best grand finials . Die Hards vs Devils ruclips.net/video/kaMIRJhgkdc/видео.html
No need to sit around, watch the replay three times in slo-mo, sip some water, have a discussion, then send a player off. Arseholes were dealt with at the next ruck. Everybody knew it, so there was very little tomfeckery that escaped justice. Rough? Sure. That’s why we fell in love with the game. Then we all went for a few beers and a bite to eat together.
@@garywagner2466 Yes!!! A guy loosen up 6 of my teeth in a ruck, so I promptly returned the favour at the next line out. We got pretty pissed afterwards at the bar. Needless to say, we skipped the food.
In a way I’d argue he’s better than of Driscoll because he could bounce people he could step he’s speed was unreal and he had similar strength of someone like jaque Fourie or Jonah lomu
I played in that era. It was hard but actual bad injuries were rare. Sometimes there were no subs allowed or only with a doctor certification. None of this stop start rubbish and water boys. Guarantee the stands would be full and people watching at home. It was a real spectacle.
I never knew much about Danie Gerber until I watched this video, what a Great Springbok! He definitely seemed like a machine of a player & definitely ranks up there with the likes of the late Jonah Lomu.
i remember watching a Welsh tv programme where the 2 or 3 Welsh players were saying , u know its hard 80 v SA , very hard , but they all said they would batter you for 80 mins , but were fantastic blokes after the internationals ..esp in South Africa ...
Almost cost the Boks the World Cup. They were so used to North American sides folding from the rough stuff, they didn’t know how to deal with the Canadians who were happy to go toe to toe. That was probably the best Canadian rugby team ever. Sad to see how lame their program has become.
This is the era where these players loved inflicting proper physical damage on fellow players. Now they want to sue the game cause it wasn’t really their fault. 😂 Ruining the game for future generations when contact will be illegal. Good job!!
Firstly, rugby Union has never had “rules”; it has “laws”. I played in so many games that were a bit like this - much less skill else, ent but same poor tackling techniques and a surfeit of skullduggery. The key cry was “get your revenge in first”
Danie Gerber is better than O'Driscol and Sella plus he is A parabat at 1 Parachute Battalion Tempe Bloemfontein and he played Rugby for South African Defence force and for Free State Rugby Union ,,far superior to O'Driscol and Sella😂
Danie Gerber was good but you cant call him great because he wasnt tested he only played 20 odd tests nowhere near enough to be calling him the greatest and he was in the SA side that toured NZ in 81 and lost the series
I don't know if this opinion is controversial or not but I think all the laws around the height of tackles has made technically better tackles from a defensive point of view, even though some were insane, I feel like I see a lot more missed tackles in the old clips.

Danie Gerber is the best centre of all time
Ja ek stem saam. Beste rugby speler en 'n goeie nederige mens.
Facts.
No doubt he could walk into any team in the world during his career or even current era.
No wasnt tested was around when SA were banned only played 20 odd tests not enough to call him the best.
@Rugby-union-fan not tested ..he played against the all blacks .England france and wallabies..that was enough ..scored in most of those .
Danie Gerber should be up there with Brian O'Driscoll and Phillipe Sella
In a way I’d argue he’s better than of Driscoll because he could bounce people he could step he’s speed was unreal and he had similar strength of someone like jaque Fourie or Jonah lomu
No matter who he played for, he was writing guys off.
He is in my book
Km's better
Danie Gerber was by far the best center in the world of all time.
Back then they smoked and drank during half time
The good old days. The Boks vs AB's games through the 2000's were awesome. Head to Head: Boks 40 AB's 62. 4 Draws.
Danie Gerber was the closest thing the Springboks had to Jonah Lomu. Impossible to stop, unreal speed and footwork, rock hard bounce off and fend.
good old days. The reason reason I played rugby.
Two reasons, then?
Reminds me of the 60's and 70's NFL prison rules!
I bet these dudes feel ruff when they get old.
Those were the days.

danie gerber...it's sad that the world will never truly know just how fkng good this guy *really* was 😐
Was he a centre or winger?
@@shaunmwesiga7579, yes 😉
Wasnt tested much only had 20 odd tests was around when SA were banned.

Nowhere near Lomu he wasnt tested only had 20 odd tests not enough to be put in Lomus category
Danie Gerber was a beast
I played in early 90´s "All in the ground is grass"
So honerd to got to the same school Danie Gerber and RASSIE Erasmus went to
Hulle is ysters.
My school boy rugby days we played between 1989 and 1994 in South Africa (Johannesburg) coach always told us...TACKLE LIKE YOU MEAN IT AND WANT IT

Also known as "The battle of Boet Erasmus". I remember watching it live - what a tough match!
They should call this smack the deck rugby.
Danie Gerber was by far the best center in the world of all time
No he only played 20 odd tests not enough to be called the greatest.
A lot of this was perfectly legal.
today rugby is going trough some bad transformation. the big boys are now little girls.

Great stuff!
DAMN!
New to rugby here, what rules are they talking about specifically?
Mostly high tackles and no wrap tackles
@@dakotatoler6976 They used to be legal? What made them ban them
whats that 2nd song
Better game in my opinion
The ref barely blew or interfered
Danny giebers the man
Men were men back then no excuses only fit nd enjoying no over muscle etc

South Africa, the dirtiest as always. Such a shame as they can play great rugby.
