- Renowned writer and Festival Director Namita Gokhale is the author of more than twenty-three books. Her debut novel, Paro:Dreams of Passion, first published in 1984, has been issued as a Modern Classic by Penguin India. The trajectory of her work touches an astonishing range. Her innovative ideas seeded the Jaipur Literature Festival and many other forums that centre staged books and translations as a cultural priority . Where does Gokhale’s energy and vision come from? In conversation with academic and writer Susana Torres , she discusses her narratives and a life in books.
Namita Gokhale is the author of twenty three works of fiction and non-fiction. She is co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival (with William Dalrymple). Her debut novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, published in 1984, remains a cult classic and has been issued as a Penguin Modern Classic in 2024. Her new novel, Never Never Land, was published in 2024. Her recent non-fiction includes Mystics and Sceptics- Searching Himalayan Masters and the anthology Treasures of Lakshmi. Gokhale’s work spans different genres, including novels, short stories, Himalayan studies, mythology, several anthologies, books for young readers, and a play. She is committed to platforming literary dialogue and showcasing the rich diversity of multilingual Indian identity. Gokhale is the recipient of various prizes and awards, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Literature) Award 2021 for her novel Things to Leave Behind.
Susana Torres is Associate Professor of Humanities at IE University (Madrid) and Associate Research Fellow at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. Her research focuses on medieval Slavic studies, particularly those centred around literary and manuscript issues. She has published extensively on literary transmission and the creation of ideologies of power.
