Hi Sandy. It is great that you make a habit of having and wearing your PPE. You also take the time to study every situation and checking your surroundings often. Jim
Sandy, a time saving suggestion, maybe there was a reason you said or showed and i didnt notice it....however my suggestion would be in this particular situation espcially with the snach block, i would dragnthe entire log to the tractor whole, then cut into smaller pieces, this way you only have to walk out to the log 1time and no resetting the snath blocks etc. Good video though, I have been shopping for a 3 point winch for awhile.
Just a little tip from someone who has ran a winch for 30 years you only need your tractor at a idle to operate the winch saves you fuel and wear and tear on your tractor engine and your winch
Hey Sandy, love the content. 540 rpm for your particular tractor is between 2000 and 2400 rpm. At around 2000 rpm the hydrolics will still function at or above 90%, still being able to lift or do whatever you need Slower the rpms are slower the movement's will be, easy to control. Not running at max rpm will prolong the life of your tractor. Not criticizing, just suggesting. I've run heavy equipment, in excavating for over 30 years, with a post as a heavy equipment instructor in the army. Thanks for your content love your channel. Like I said just offering knowledge, not bashing.
Hi Sandy. I think you could have avoided making the hole in the skidding cone larger by running the choker chain through the cone, and connecting that to the chain hook. That's the way the video at PortableWinch shows how to use the skidding cone.
Looked like a beautiful day to be out in the forest Sandy. Th winch is working awesome for you. Just my thoughts, honestly; not sure I see the value in the nose cone. A few folks have suggested I use one, but I don't think the small potential benefit of it is worth the hassle of managing it on and off etc. But happy it is working out for you. Thanks for sharing and be safe out there!
Thanks! Yeah I think that nose cone does it's best work in the winter when I find the logs really dig down and get stuck in the deep snow. In the warmer weather I think I probably could do without it at times especially with the hard ground.
Awesome work, you will learn small tricks on how to position your chain hooks to bypass stumps and trees, I can see you may need a log trailer some day lol, although that dirt you have there isn’t too bad on blades like gravel and rocks. I use a wire brush to get the dirt off before I saw a dirty log. Richard makes a nice brush you put on a broom handle Canadian tire have them. Keep up the great work .
Great job. That winch system is the ticket for what you are trying to accomplish for your pine plantation. Just watch which side of the choker hooks you pull against. Noticed once you was pulling against the open side. Shouldn’t really matter much with the smaller ones but it’s a bad habit to get into if you pull something bigger
It wont take long for the new winch to pay for itself in time saved.. Feel lucky you arnt my neighbor, ide be bugging you to borrow it lol... Keep up the good work there brother..
Here's how I look at it, remember what equipment you had to use when you first started hauling logs to what you have now. So much easier even if you have to walk back and forth to unhook/hook cables. I figured the extra steps keep a person in shape. Even noticed your getting a good collection of chokers, pulleys and chains. You should be pretty proud of your little operation Sandy! Enjoy the wonderful fall weather man! 🍁
I too have the FX85 winch and I gave some serious thought to the remote control option but decided to buy the manual version. Maybe I’m missing something, but I could only thing of two situations where the remote would be an advantage. One would be if a choker on the log(s) pulled off and you had to re-set, and the other would be that it would allow you to collect the snatch block and strap on your last trip to the tractor without walking back to get it. In every other situation, you still have to walk back to the tractor either to release the logs and pull the cable back for another, or to harness the logs and drive away. I’m very happy with the manual versions, and hey - most of need a bit more exercise anyway!
Another selling point is cutting the limbs you know you can't reach from underneath. Just winch a little with the choker set to roll the log and you're back to de-limbing. Or when you get it hung up on a stump. With a peavy in one hand, winch remote in the other, easily free it and keep winching. Glad you're liking it regardless! I don't have the remote either and have pulled at least 300 cord without a remote. The cone is nice but it can be cumbersome to carry along with saw, chokers, cable, etc. I ditched it awhile back but also primarily skid in the winter.
well Sandy I think that was a beautiful site when you pulled all four long logs out without tearing the track up to much, on the long pulls think about adding another cable to the end of the one you are using thus pulling them into range of the winch, extra work but maybe a bit safer, what do you think.
Good vid and I bet you'll want that remote once you have to trudge through 2 feet of snow back and forth to the tractor, lol. Oh, and get yourself a self releasing pulley, you'll thank yourself over and over especially as inexpensive as they are. Cheers!
Need one of those auto release pulleys designed for what you were doing when choker line gets to pulley it automatically dops out a d change direction of pull with out having to unhook and rehook
Not sure if you know but those red sliders on the winch cable are to hook your chokers to then you can hook the entire tree cut into logs and do one pull instead of having to do multiple pulls for one tree.
I have yet to see a fellow with one of those winches get the tractor to the wood. It's like I got 150 feet of cable, lets walk back and forth as far away as I can. I have logged with JD 350 crawler and cable jammer and dump trailer. Forwarder, and now Kubota. Pallet forks for 100" pulp, box blade set up to pole skid big stuff. 3 stick logs in winter, to dirty to do that in summer. But I always get the tractor to the wood.
Hello Sandy second time with the winch i was wandering that tree was how much in diameter i believe you could of pull that tree in one piece to were the tractor was the tree will bend somewhat around other tree if it is not to sharp of a bend then because of your trails and corner then once at the tractor you cut it in smaller length that way you could of save yourself a lots of walking and if you drag your tree somewhat slowly a lots of time it will not affect the other trees that your rubbing on not enough yo damage them maybe next time you should try the full length just to see have a great day
After you unhooked from the sling... I was wondering why you didn't pull the last log up to the 1st one then the 3rd and the 2nd... then you could have pulled them all out the last stretch at the same time.
Great video Sandy. I just got the same winch. Good to see a bit of it in action. I have also seen those releasing Good comments here too. I've considered one of those auto release pulleys. If you were to use a plumbing plunger in the front of the yellow nose cone, cut it open to put in the cable and glue it shut with rubber cement you will have a friction fit over the cable which prevents the cone from sliding away from the front of the log...
Good job. Careful winching at 90* have broke our cable doing that. And I like to keep the choker chains with the open end away from ya👍. And always if possible keep your winch straight with pull as much as possible. Especially on bigger logs as it can tip your tractor over. But you probably already know that. Hey Sandy, you mentioned the tape you use in a previous video, sorry i cant seem to find it. Who makes it and where did you get it. Struggling to find a source here on Ontario
Just a quick question. Do you find that the branches you cut off of the trees you log self mulch pretty well? Or do you need to come back through and clear them periodically? Edit: You may find that a roughly 6 foot long log choker chain to grab the logs, which is then fed though the skid shield then hooked to the cable may be a bit helpful for ease of use for both the winch and skid shield. It would put your connection point at an easier to both see and grab spot, which would be safer as well. Also, love the chainsaw scabbard on the front of the tractor! Edit 2: I've found that a grade 70 release like a rollback has often been great for putting at the end of my winch. They're also relatively cheap as long as you're not trying to move entire cars.

When you have multiple sections of a tree or 2 trees in line, can you hook to the furthest piece with the blue end connector and then pick up a couple of closer sections on the way in using the red sliders? You would have to hook the cone to the nearest section but may be worth a try.
Maybe a HDPE barrel (10 gallon or so) cut so it can wrap around a tree and fitted with a couple of ratchet strap ends to secure it closed will help protect trees from debarking while dragging logs along it...
It works well but may be hard to tell here as it wasn’t the perfect setup for it . You’ll have to check out some of my videos from back a bit when I was using it in winter. Really prevents the logs from digging

I've got mixed opinions. If I were there... it's hard to judge. A Definite advantage if dragging BIG LOGS, but for what you did today, wouldn't using the side-by-side to drag them to the tractor, and then use the winch to drag all the logs to the mill. In the long run it might be good... especially for big ones.
I’m not able to to get the atv down that too easily unfortunately. Also I’ve found with the limited pulling power of the AtV I often dig myself holes of the logs get hung up.
Ugh, frustrating watching you rig it up 4 more times than you needed to! Especially while sitting in my Lay Z Boy, ha. Keyhole sliders (red things on the cable) should have been used. String the cable out and to the farthest log. One slider from the end connects to the second log farthest from the tractor. Third slider to the third farthest log. As the winch pulls, the farthest log moves to the second farthest. Then the farthest and second farthest move to the third and then all 3 head to the tractor altogether. That's 3 logs in one rigging and you would have only had to remove the snatch block once for 3 logs to go around that corner.
The first log was the furthest the cable could reach so couldnt use the key holes sliders on the initial pull unfortunately. Had to string up multiple chains to get 2nd, third logs to within reach of cable end. I did unhook block one additional time to change angle of pull and to check that first log would be out of the way. Likely difficult to see in the video.
I was a logger for 12 years. Trust me anything that can happen will happen. Keep your guard up. You can never be to careful. Stay safe. Awesome video.

I did unhook block one additional time to change angle of pull and to check that first log would be out of the way. Likely difficult to see in the video.
@@sawingwithsandy this is why I always carry another lenght (50 or 100 ft) of cable. ;-)
