- In this 3rd episode, we compare the sizes of tsunamis, from the smallest to the biggest ones. Starting from the smallest yet deadliest Tsunami, the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that claimed over 200,000 lives, all the way to Lituya Bay Mega Tsunami over 1000 feet tall, and even beyond that!

The Indian Ocean tsunami is proof that size isn’t everything
I think most of the death toll is from the earthquake, which is the third largest ever recorded by magnitude and duration. The location was also a big factor, targeting coastal cities.
edit: this was a wrong speculation according to some people, sorry if I misled you. It seems that the centre of the earthquake itself was quite far from land, therefore the death toll part was wrong. I left the comment as it is, my mistake.

NTG Alive but the recovery efforts (at least in Indonesia) were hampered by the earthquake, and the tsunami hit poorer cities, that didn’t have large emergency response networks like some cities do

2:35 that's one of the least known disasters to ever hit my country, Italy. The people weren't advised in time despite the fact that the engineers knew the dam had problems more than 2 years in advance. An entire mountain felt into the valley flooding more than 3 villages. Today there's a memorial built in there and parts of the villages are still abandoned.

I always wonder, Why the smallest one has killing 230,000 people?
Location is the first reason. The second reason is that tsunami's mainly kill because of the debris that they carry not because of the actual water. Think about trying to swim through a rapidly flowing river full of sharp twigs, broken glass, rocks, pathogens, broken street signs, cars, etc.

Tsunamis were not well-known by then (worldwide). People were amazed by stranded fish & exposed corals, only to realise it is too late. It (2004 tsunami) also occured in many countries, even those far away from the epicenter, striking island beach resorts.
To put how terrifying the last one would actually be into perspective, imagine if a giant wall made entirely of water was approaching you rapidly, and no matter how far up you looked you wouldn't be able to see its edge.
The second to last one happened and is taller than the Empire State Building and a dude and his son rode it out on a boat

If I recall correctly, the Lituya Bay tsunami was a spilling wave, which meant that it crept up very high instead taking the stereotypical tsunami wave.
Still, it's terrifying to think about.
@@tsunamianakin9649 not exactly. They were further down the bay from the tsunami. So by the time it reached them, it had reduced in height by up to 80%. People who were swept up at it's highest point were killed.

The last tsunami was only theoretical, it never actually happened. The real tsunami was only about 100m high. The theoretical tsunami is if the same meteor that caused that tsunami landed in the deepest parts of the pacific ocean.

First off, it wasnt the smallest.
Secondly, in just indonesia alone the 2004 boxing day tsunami killed OVER 100,000 people. IN INDONESIA ALONE, the rest were casualties mostly in Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. Not saying there werent other countries affected as well but all 3 i have mentioned make up the other 100,000+ people dead/assumed dead in the tsunami.
Third, the only reason its smallest on his comparison is because thats where he chose to start the simulation comparison at. There are plenty of other tsunamis far smaller that that.
FOR EXAMPLE AS OF SEPT 28, 2018, a 7.5 magnitude Earthquake shook Indonesia and caused it TO HAVE A 10 FT TSUNAMI WAVE HIT Indonesia. Again although these waves are smaller than others does not mean they are any more insignificant or significant than the rest.
Sorry if i came off rude, i just dont want you to get the idea that the 2004 tsunami was tiny because that surely doesnt do the damage and heartbreak it caused any justice.

The tsunami would still have been taller than the Lituya Bay Tsunami. Yutacan Peninsula is still deeper than the Lituya Bay. So even if the tsunami wasn't four kilometers, it would have been still dangerously close 1 kilometer or even taller.

The lituya bay mega tsunami was measured that big bc the epicenter was in the water right behind a mountain, and the epicenter released a huge amount of pressure, and speed to make it up the mountain, so they measured the mountain and how high the water went, when realistically it would have been smaller than at least 450m
