Best fix on the entire Internet for this and I've been researching this for almost a year and a half.
Even if you completely fucked up your interior panel, the zip tie fix is the best.
Worked like a charm today. Thanks!

99 Explorer Sport with *all* the issues plus extra.
Taking a socket to the nut tomorrow. Still have to replace the plastic washer on the glass. I’ll try the zip tie trick as well-I’ll need to watch a few more times because the metal rod is long gone.
While my glass latch was fixed now the hatch itself won’t latch shut (let alone lock).
The passenger door won’t open. Took enough of the door apart to get to the roof, but it’s attached fine and shoving the rod back won’t pop the door open. I guess the mechanism is frozen?
    236k miles, though…so there’s that.

super glued mine 5 years ago. it failed again... Why couldn't Ford have a metal piece that won't break apart like the plastic they used. WTF were they thinking having a piece of plastic on a high stress area like that!?

Might be too late for this reply, but here goes. First, unscrew the handle loop on the inside. It has two screws that come out. Then The trim just pops right off. Start at the top, then work your way down. It's very flexible, so no fear about damaging it. At the bottom it's all 'hooks' that you just have to pull the whole thing down and lift it up to get them out of the holes.
Once that's off, there's a black cover that you can also pull off. It's tougher, but it also just pops off too. Might need a thick, long flat-head to wedge it off. After that, you'll be where the video shows where everything is. pretty much work with the liftgate all the up above your head. It ducking sucks, because the door has so much metal still in the way; but you can reach where the guy shows the zip-tie.
To get the gate open, you'll have to muscle where there's a circular thing with two rods directly below the Window latch is, one rod is on top and the other on the bottom; you see where a piece of plastic acts as a "stopper" to keep it from going the wrong way. You'll have to muscle it to turn the top to the left and lift up on the bottom rod, which you can reach further to the left; lift that up while pulling the top rod to the left, and that will release the lift gate latches.
It's a good idea to rig up a pully string to that top rod so you can more easily get the gate open in case it fails again.

To help with this guys reply.
The part where the two cable/rods connect have yellow plastic holders you cant miss em theyre the first thing you see.
Those 2 yellow pieces one on top one at bottom like he said. Just pull one to the right and the other to the left. You do have to use some muscle to pull at the same time and push door open.

my daughter's 1999 Ford Explorer lift gate window leaks. I went to the Ford dealership but they didn't have the part and said to search online. I cannot find the part, because I do not even know the name of the part. Is it a liftgate seal or rear hatch seal ... does anyone know what it is called and where I might find one? It looks just like the Explorer in this video, so I was hoping I might see it fixed with tips. Thanks!

I gave up on trying to fit that plastic connector that joins the Lifgate Rod Acuator with the handle (TAILGATE HANDLE ROD RETAINER DOOR CLIP). My 2001 Explorer part is LIFTGATE CLIP (5028497AA). But, the thing was not going in the hole so, I USED A ZIP TIE! DONE DEAL! Wasted time and money on that clip, however..! Typical Ford Shit!
