Hawaii - Escape the night (1984)

- Track taken from the second release of this band from Hawaii (USA), "Loud, Wild and Heavy" EP (1984, Cavern Productions) and is an anthem of US power metal. I guess that's the reason it can be found in 3 different versions: one in "Made in Hawaii" EP (by pre-Hawaii band Vixen, 1983), another in "One Nation Underground" LP (by Hawaii, 1983) and the last one and my personal favorite in this EP.
Note that the band's guitarist/leader was Marty Friedman who later joined Megadeth.
Okay, so in the mid 80's as a 15-16 year old I was beginning to really get deep into more obscure metal bands. But my access to this stuff was somewhat limited- only so much stuff got around in the midwest in those days. One day, I'm outside in my yard going to get the mail and I find 2 blank cassette tapes on the side of the road. Someone had obviously lost them- my guess it was the older stoner dude that lived down the road from me, probably fell out of his car has he was peeling out in front of my house- which always irked my dad. Anyhow, the tapes had writing on them- one of them was a mixtape of various metal bands that most everyone knew. It was probably a copy of some compilation album of the time. The other one had "Hawaii" written on it. At the time I thought that couldn't be the name of the band. I remember distinctly that the songs on it were just so good. It was something that I hadn't quite heard before. I took it to school to play for my friends, and they loved it too. I remember getting a lot of cred for finding this unknown band- it was like I had made this important discovery. Everyone thought I had access to things they couldn't possibly ever hope to find. The funny thing was, when they asked me who the band was- I would just say Hawaii. But I never really believed that was the name of the band. I really wanted to find out who the band was, but I never figured it out. I didn't want to ask the stoner dude- because I wanted to keep the tape. In my part of the world, these songs never came up again. I only knew them from this mysterious blank tape I found on the side of the road. Until now, 30 something years later- I decided to do a search for "Hawaii the metal band" and immediately I discovered that this was the band all along. And then to find out that Marty Friedman was the guitarist? I'm speechless. Probably close to 30 years since I heard this song again- but I remember it. Doesn't sound as groundbreaking now- but hey, I was 16. Shit, I think I just told my first old man story. Now I'm bummed.
Dude, that was a great story. Thanks for sharing.
That's an awesome story..!! Just imagine trying to find out who this band that was haunting you all your life was and you became an old man lying on your death bed and finally your oldest son/daughter discovered the band on the tape and told you as you're gasping your last breath and you smiled peacefully drifting into eternal rest.. Wow this could be a movie based on a true story.. do it my friend submit your story and get a movie deal. I would see this movie definitely.. go for it.. I support you.. This is awesome Thank you for sharing my friend.
Some music is timeless.. to me that's always the mark of a good band. I just discovered hawaii this week. TO me it sounds fresh and is creative. If that helps at all....
Wow yes the early eighties, with no internet, you were basically on your own. I stumbled on Hawaii - and had the same incredulity in regards to the band name - one day at a friend of a friend's home.
grajmahal this story kicks ass! Do you still have those tapes? \m/
"If it takes all your life to find happiness then it's so" is a lyric that keeps the human spirit alive. Merci!
Oliver, there's actually 5 versions of this song.
1. On "Demo #2 under the band name "Vixen" in 1981, the original cut of it.
2. On "Demo #3 also by Vixen in 1981, the second cut.
3. On the "Made In Hawaii" in 1983, still as Vixen.
4. On "One Nation Underground" in 1983, the first version done under the band name Hawaii.
5. The final version from "Loud, Wild and Heavy" that is posted here. (The version I covered.)
Hope this helped. =D
My band also covered this in the late eighties, We opened our shows with it .
Hey I have this record I feel like a teenager again a gazillion thumbs up I believe Marty Friedman is on record
Man. It’s hard to deny how much this reminds me of like a more technically proficient G.I.S.M. I love it.
Always trust in dreams
Even if it seems like such a losing cause
Feel what you believe
Don't be persuaded by those whose lives are lost
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
The simple words I have to say
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
Escape the night and into day
Always trust your feelings
Every day gets brighter and lights the fire, I know
Kneel and you'll believe it
And if it takes firelight to find happiness, then it's so
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
The simple words I have to say
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
Escape the night and into day
[Guitar solo] + [La Chance's build-up]
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
The simple words I have to say
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
Escape the night and into day
Escape the night and into day
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
Just hear the words I have to say
And if your dreams feel like they're coming to an end
Escape the night and live today
Always trust your feelings
Every day gets brighter and lights the fire, I know
Need and you'll be needed
And if it takes all your life to find happiness, then it's so
Martys the man!

Killer heavy metal
The Vixen version was the first one.
They are from U.S.A.,but sound is like NWOBHM,band like Tokyo Blade...
Yeah. Tokyo Blade. Great Band in the beginning. Love them.
@rpcarnell actually, this isnt his first band. His first band was with my dad, it was called "Duece" My dad and him grew up together and they are still in contact to this day. When the first singer of hawaii quit, Marty asked my dad to come to Hawaii to be their lead singer. These are his vocals.
Eddie Day?! OMG
Now I am listening this song after more then 30 years and I am so glad. The intro riff is legendary. Big salute from Croatia🤘

RIP Joey Galisa 🤘
Awesome
Amazing
super Friedman
@nam19771 Look at the description, where I've listed the 3 versions of this song I'm aware of.
I'd love to see Hula girls hula to this!
Awesome band.
this is fucking good
sick song
I have this LP!!!!!
@powervalkyrie I know they're not the same. I could try to figure that one out as well.
❤ super heavy metal.
Freedman Unchained....
yeah, he's pretty cool
Reminds me of Judas Priest?
Judas is stronger...
More early Def Leppard...
Pretty much every metal band from the early 80's was influenced by Judas Priest.
@@hinjurock70 and even late 80's. The only point maiden was more influential was 1986 because their album from that year was better and more bands copied that than turbo's sound (which for some parts were already done). Ram it down stomps 7th son of 7th son tho.
Teenager Marty Freidman
Great
killer
anyone know where i can get the lyrics for the song?
When I saw the title I thought of the youtube original series escape the night
@Tadakatsu77 No probs, I'll do it ;)
Commentaire.🎉
this song was from VIXEN or the opposit ?
Vixen, then recorded again on One Nation Underground, and then here. All three are amazing because it’s one of the best songs ever written.
\m/arty Friedman
you can ask me any question about them together, i can answer it, also, marty and my dad are both from hyatsville/the montgomery county area.
Si veniste por marty friedman like.
Aguante las pastas frolas
Wouldn`t think it`s quite the proper name to eclipse Metallica, but...
still great sound!
The Vixen (female fronted) version is way better. Kim La Chance on Vocals...
His old Marshall + SD1 sounds way better than his current high dollar Engls and shit.
the hell it doesn't. those engl's sound less bitey and actually smoother/warmer in tone. Marshall sounds like any other band from that time, it gets pretty tiresome.
@@aryinc lmao. hahahaha.. You are right. Although it sounded killer back then.
@@danpena4472 for that certain time definitely. but times change, some people are stuck in the 80ts and never evolved beyond marshall.
La versión de vixen es mejor, concepto personal
de acuerdo
