Nvidia going open source is great news for the Linux community. Nvidia has been very difficult with Linux distros for a long time.
They are doing it so they can move from X11 to Wayland, they are only open sourcing what's needed to support Wayland, it's not the full driver but it's sure hell of start for Nvidia and hope they Open source more things in the future
It's a step in the right direction, but so far there's only support for RTX cards. The majority is still on Pascal.
Yeah I was trying to install some nvidia drivers on mx Linux literal yesterday and it was a pain to get it to work with a 770. Ended up installing a different distro, majaro since it's arch based
Supposedly this isn't as good of a solution as it seems.
If only they were truly going open source
"why call them quick bits when we could be calling them... SHORT CIRCUITS!"
Honestly, yeah, i agree with that desire
But then how could you change the name to Quack Butts?
@@TheRogueWolf shorts circus?
I like it when guests from other channels do these tech news from time to times, a fresh take!
I hope they paid for his travel costs.

Super stoked to see Jono (probably spelled wrong, sorry) do this :)))
@@memereview1337 It'd be so Linus to pay travel cost for Jono "travelling" from the director's chair all the way to the other side of the camera. 😅
especially when they take jabs at the channel
I'm loving this channel strife between "Short Linked" and "Quick Circuit"
What if they put the “quick” in the second part of the name? So instead of “Techlinked,” it becomes “Techquickie.” Just something I came up with completely on my own, you guys let me know your thoughts 👍
@@ethanlenning Ehh it sounds dumb I don't think anyone would watch a channel by that name. But I was fiddling around a bit and this might sound crazy but, what about "Short Circuit"? Might just catch on but you guys will have to voice your opinions on that one.

Nvidia: Man, the Linux community is fragmented. But anyway, here's our driver.
Linux gamers: *blessed*
Linux gamers don't exist. Why try when you can literally have a partition to boot windows and game normally like everyone else does? lol.
@@noelcovarrubias7490 Why should I boot into a terrible OS when Wine literlly runs a lot of Games better than Windows?
Of course I game on Linux!
@@richardk2n a lot of games better and thousands not at all
@@chunnin33 It doesn't matter that "it doesn't run thousands of games", what matters is what those games it can run. Since I switched to Linux couple months ago as a test I've been able to play every single game from my steam library I wanted to play, no issues whatsoever except discord doesn't support audio when streaming to my friends and that's annoying. Of course your mileage may vary depending on the games you play and I'll probably encounter some games that don't work later.
@@chunnin33 I am rather sure that this statement is rather outdated. Within the last years I never encountered even a single game that did not run on Linux. If a game is new it might take a little until it runs on Linux, but otherwise I never encountered even a single game not running on Linux. Funnily enough Windows has a lot more issues running Windows games than Linux has. Old games don't work on Windows (Windows claims to have a compatibility mode. Ancient games as in 15+ years old still don't run). Linux runs them all. And one of my most loved examples: Neither me nor Ubisoft Support managed to get AC Valhalla running on my Windows (in the end Support recommended reinstalling Windows). To this day I have no clue why it won't work. But I got it running on Linux. At this point I am certain that in total Linux runs more Windows games than Windows does.
You think this has to do with that data leak a few months back that came alongside a threat of more leaks if they didn't make their drivers open source?
Unlikely, it's not the whole stack, only a part of it, which doesn't meet the demands iirc.
Lol, don't think so. I can't imagine hacking blackmailers would go "well we didn't actually get the result we wanted but you technically did what we asked so we better hold up our end of the bargain"
I like how your profile picture matches the host
Nvidia was able to retroactively encrypt the data the hackers stole so they were left with useless info. I’m not sure exactly how they did it but the leaked lapsus chats show them talking about it.
Mining software devs confirmed that the 100% LHR unlock was possible because of some loopholes that they received from the hacked data
Forget the free games, I remember when GPU boxes were the most trippy weird things ever. Frog knight in full plate armor, pixie blasting magic and weird ass staring dude on voodo cards. I have no idea if they made the cards sell better though.
... I guess well never know
Wow that's actually a great move! That means you can just run your Linux on the open-source drivers without having to switch around when changing to a different system.
I had that experience recently, when I took my external Manjaro Linux SSD that is normally hooked up to my gaming laptop and hooked it up with the Steam Deck.
You have to switch the driver via a live USB stick every time you switch between AMD and Nvidia GPU's, otherwise you won't get into your system (or at least you can't see anything). That won't be necessary anymore. 🙌
I have installed ubuntu 21.04 on a usb drive and it boots up on an intel igpu laptop, desktop and a pc with nvidia card. Printer drivers allowed it to recognise the printer which my main pc never did on windows.
The driver isn’t open source, just the kernel module, and not the entire kernel module.
You really don’t have to do all of that. The easy solution to your problem is to not use the worst Linux distro, other than Ubuntu, that exists. Just use arch, Arco, Garuda, fedora, etc.
@@FaZekiller-qe3uf you clearly are a very ignorant and pedantic person if you think distro matters at all.
All Linux is Linux. The only real difference is the package manager. (Unless you are talking about something that actually does something differently like Clear Linux or Nix OS)
Suppose the firmware (card) and OS parts of the driver package get updates and the versions get out of synch? I can see having to reflash the card on every boot to the other OS.
I wish AMD would make their old ATI drivers open source. Rage 128. iMac G3. Linux. It needs it.
Apple video card firmwares, too!
I hate AMD 🤣🤣
Maybe the OG Omega driver guys could do it, because ATi's original drivers were dogshit.

Jonnooo so happy to see you hosting
Jono just "random bullshit"ed us.
Can we please just have a new GPU manufacturer that does everything open source by default
amd? they've been open sourcing their drivers since over 10 years ago
@@iyxan2340 i mean like full blown everything is out and open source and is barely controlled by a central hub at all
I assume AMD has lots of proprietary software that isn’t part of “drivers” necessarily, or they exert tight control over the code even though they call it open source, like Google with android
You want people working for free while the spend time and money on R&D?
@@TheNeku123 I think you miss the point of open source software completely
It’s not about people “working for free”
In the case of GPUs it’s about not having a company tell you what you can or can’t do with the hardware you purchased
And it’s about the people developing the software doing it out of passion and willingly providing it for free, or for donations (as many devs do) not about just wanting to get free products, distributing the work across thousands of passionate programmers instead of a handful of corporate puppets that will add all the horrible anti consumer features they’re told to
And in the case of GPUs, they’re not selling you software, they’re selling you hardware, they’re selling you GPUs, and they’re using the fact that it’s closed source to fuck you over as the consumer, locking out features that are right there on the silicon with drivers and selling the exact same GPU with different drivers or inputs for many times the price
Open source is about freedom, not about wanting things for free.
@@tommykarrick9130 good luck with that when the lightest fabs/manufacturers (easiest to enter/interface for a startup) that could pull this off are in China since most western companies only really aim for the high end propriety stuff these days. The communist are even less gung ho about open source for some reason.

I'm surprised by the XSplit sponsorship, but I have to say that connect is brilliant. Cell phone cameras have out performed webcams for far to long, and almost everyone has one anyway 🤔

USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 Type-C for iPhone and iPad.
USB4 Gen 3×2 Type-C for iPhone Pro and iPad Pro.
USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 uses 128b/132b encoding.
USB4 Gen 2x1 uses 64b/66b encoding.
USB4 Gen 3x2 uses 128b/132b encoding.
Keeping the USB encoding the same offers simplicity and commonality of USB chips across models.
I wish USB4 Gen 2 and Gen 3 uniformly used 128b/132b encoding; however, 64b/66b encoding differentiation is required for certain USB applications.
would love to see him more and make more short circuit references and jokes
Their source code was already leaked before they did this, turncoat for PR with those Nvidia Foss drivers. It is cool for distros though.
True
It also has to do a lot with the business of servers and datacenters. Nvidia couldn't care less about the like 2% of Linux users but a majority of the "backend of the internet" runs on Linux.
Additionally, as Jono said, a lot is still not open source.
This has nothing to do with code leaks. It was revealed that Red Hat was working on this with Nvidia for a long time. Also you can't use leaked code in your projects, not without major legal consequences.
@Fashinqu A. I never said anything against them being used for desktops, I just said that Nvidia made them less with specifically desktop people in mind. It's more like a positive side effect.
@@Das_Unterstrich these drivers won't help my laptop with a 1060. Is that what you mean?

I am perturbed at how you guys reported on HB 20. The appeals court DID not say they were ISP's. They simply overturned a previous stay. Texas is arguing that they are common carriers and therefore is subject to state oversight, not the courts who have not ruled on the case itself. I doubt Texas prevails but at least don't read crap sights like verge and slate for your opinions, especially legal ones at that.
Been using Nvidia on Linux for years never had an issue with the Driver in like 5/6 years now, it's not like the old days where it was a huge pain to set them up but the current driver only officially supports x11 so they need tighter integration to fully support Wayland so they only open source the parts that are needed to better support Wayland
Drivers don't support software. It's the other way around. X11 supports Nvidia. Wayland devs didn't want to support the closed source driver. The closed source driver works decently. Nouveau, the open source driver, is what has performance issues
@@rahul9704 Nouveau is mostly reversed engineering only time Nvidia gives them any code is when a GPU is no longer supported by Nvidia so that takes years normally, and yes you are correct as the Wayland Devs I don't think want to waste the time reverse engineering the driver, Nvidia did start on a middle ground called Xwayland to translate Wayland to X11 but I'm now thinking Nvidia has ditched that, honestly Xwayland was just a waste of time as a whole, so I'm guessing Nvidia just bit the bullet and said Open Source what's needed to support Wayland native.
@@arranmc182 XWayland translates X11 to Wayland, not the other way around. XWayland isn't "just a waste of time as a whole," it's required for such a large and slow software transition. XWayland is still being worked on by Nvidia as is Nvidia's work on EGL Streams (and a bit ago, GBM) for wayland.
I've had problems having my system run well with CUDA cores enabled on Linux, so I hope this might solve some of those problems eventually.
@@arranmc182 Wayland devs didn't need to reverse engineer the driver. They could support Nvidia's API. They just don't want to.
"Where are my bananas?"
A question I ask myself more and more as time goes by.
Great work team.
Nvidia just moved all of the driver functions into the firmware, which is now 34MB big and released a wrapper around it as "driver". Essentially, this closes up the hardware even further. Old products (1000 series and earlier) don't recieved any improvements either, which is sad, because not even a 14 years old 9400M (which driver is EOL) works properly with nouveau.
This is not a proper open source driver - this is just glue code making API calls to a black box! AMD's hardware is open to the point where you can manually poke registers and set their content. Don't even dare to compare the two.
Whilst from what Ive seen FSR 2.0 isn't as good as DLSS currently is, it's a win win for everyone - You're more likely to run into at least one option when playing games. As long as either technology remains minimal on causing graphical issues and just enhances things, its a great thing to see.
(To clarify by issues, one example I ran into recently was using RTX and DLSS at the same time in Control - particularly shiny walls basically turned into a light oldschool TV static)
To fix Control DLSS issues you just have to update the dll, the one that comes with it made me dizzy, now it's just ok.
Also, when it comes to upscaling there will always be issues, thin parallel lines are never exent from artifact for example, and any subpixel details have to be made up, so temporal consistency has to take a hit.
Great work Jono, those ShortCircuit moves will teach TechLinked not to mess with you!
