- Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival presents a Centenary Tribute to Faiz Ahmed Faiz with
"LAB AZAAD HAIN"

An evening of Faiz's poetry & ghazals dedicated to the memory of Jit Paul, founder, Apeejay Surrendra Group. Faiz's daughter Salima Hashmi will make the introduction.Naseeruddin Shah will recite Faiz's poetry in Urdu & English. Ustad Shujaat Khan will render Faiz's ghazals. H.E. Shahid Malik, Pakistan High Commissioner, will grace the occasion as Chief Guest. In association with Anamika Kala Sangam, Kolkata Supported by Ministry of Culture
Guest of Honour: Jawhar Sircar, Secretary, Ministry of Culture.

to the day’s sorrows, cross with life’s overflowing garden
the thicket of yellowing leaves
this thicket of dying leaves that is my land
this assembly of anguish that is my land
to the melancholic lives of clerks
to their moth-eaten hearts and tongues
to the postmen
to the tangewallahs
to the railway men
to the valiant, famished factory hands
in the name of the ruler of the world, the lord of all things, God’s vice-regent on earth
to the peasant
whose livestock was waylaid by his tormentors
whose daughter was snatched away by dacoits
who gave up one finger of his palm-sized farm to the keeper of books
and another to the government as tax
whose proud turban has been ripped to shreds
beneath the feet of his oppressors
to those miserable mothers
whose children wail all night
who will not be consoled by tears or entreaties
and will not be comforted by those weary, sleep-deprived shoulders
that keep their sorrows to themselves
to those rosy-eyed belles
who blossomed unseen
upon sterile vines of windows and drapes

who knocked on the doors of administrators
petitioning for books and pens

those innocents, who in their naiveté

the ink of occluded, undying night was being handed out
to those prisoners
in whose hearts the firefly hope of a bejeweled dawn
