Jim Steranko IS actually that cool . I had my booth across from his for two days at a con and got two autographs from him . he was very interesting to talk to , not boring or egotistical at all imho.

For years Jack Kirby's wife signed his autographs for him. He also became older and his signatures changed over time. that makes it quite a challenge to authenticate but I took a 2 hour class on authenticating his signature and passed a test versus forgeries. It was eye opening.

Sticky I really like your channel and videos, but I think you’re way off base on this one - I think you need some perspective. Life is short and difficult and collecting anything is inherently absurd. We do it for fun and to enjoy the feeling of being in that other world for a few moments. If a collector collects only coverless comics because that’s what he enjoys that’s awesome and we should celebrate it. If he collects only famous covers and never reads a single comic we should celebrate it. If he collects only signed books of creators that he loves but was never there in person for the signature we should celebrate it. If he wants to slab those books we should celebrate it….because it makes him happy and that’s how he wants to collect and that’s what brings him joy - and life is short, so we should celebrate it - that’s the message that we need in this hobby. 😁👍

I personally collect autographs so I obviously strongly disagree. For me it’s about owning a piece of history and cementing a moment in time. I see signed Beatles vinyl and it gives me chills thinking about how huge they were and how much trouble someone must’ve gone through to get it signed and then I think about each of their lives and thier impact on not just music but people around the world and the fact that I can own a physical representation of that legacy. I see autographs like art in a way. They’re a short burst of expression of who the person is and owing that for me personally is really special. The fact that the person interacted with the item gives it life for me. I collect screen worn wardrobe too from films and shows and I swear some of these pieces have an aura to them.

I enjoy finding autographed books from before scribbling on the cover was a thing - generally on page 1 by the indicia. That says to me a fan got a book signed, which adds something to it. I like the history and little bit of provenance it adds. Also, photos are expensive. I decided against a photo with Stan and got his signature instead because there was a huge price difference.

I'm with you, since I've only sent to CBCS comic books that I had signed personally by celebs that I met. It's not cost-effective, but it does preserve a good memory that I have and like to show to friends and I get personal value out of that. I'll try the new CGC program, but I wonder if there's any discount for already-verified by JSA items.

  • @jrucker4181

I very much disagree. Many creators are so fun to talk to . Signatures from people who have passed. I don't care about pictures myself. You know signatures have been around for over 100 years? Signatures have always been collectable for fans. If you don't like it that's fine. I am thrilled about this.

I think $25 is the same as the CBCS price.
I get it why this is important. What if you have a Jack Kirby sig, or any other signature that preceded CGC?
What I don't get is "grading" an autograph. That sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it's just going to be another thing to monetize.

Got a remarque and picture with Ottley as well. In future might consider this grading option. Don't think it's a bad decision. I then wanted to get it graded. But didn't wanna have to spend extra. I want him to add onto the blank as well, so that would be later down the line

Couldn't agree more on the idea of sigs being worthless. Call me crazy, but my real collecting focus has been remarques, original artwork and sketch covers. My favorite experiences with artists have been briefly meeting them, setting up a remarque and seeing the result a few hours later. Someone purposefully (albeit for money) creating a little piece of art just for you is so satisfying.

i have used James Spence authentication for years for sports stuff. Spence hasn't typically graded autographs, but PSA and Beckett has and a mickey mantle "10" carries a premium., but i won't be doing the same for comics. the market will establish the value. i have some interesting stories about auto authentication

IDK. While I don't personally value signatures, it is a pretty (sometimes seedy) established industry. I don't think the Signature series books will tumble, because those are witnessed sigs, versus the black label sigs. What does it add value wise? I doubt it would be an outrageous premium. Maybe 10%? Maybe just the $25. I guess we'll see how the market adjusts or if these black labels operate as competitors to the CBCS signatures.

I like most of your takes on the community and books but this video feels slightly off. I like getting my books graded with witnessed signatures and I don’t buy graded books with verified signatures so I understand what you are saying. I do think a signature is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it but overpricing is not healthy for the community.. with that said I got a my UF4 second print signed by Clayton Crain (Murda sig) at NYCC 22 witnessed and the whole process cost me $221 on the spot… if I sell that book, I would have to take the FMV+$221 and then my time getting that book done.. $400 minimum and I have a 9.6 that may be a 1 of 1 for now

My personal opinion has always been that signatures are for children so they have a keepsake from when meeting their heros much like it was for me when I was 9 or 10 and found myself standing opposite Kirby Puckett of MLB fame. He was turning down every adult asking for an autograph that day at the ballpark but was signing for all the kids watching batting practice. That's how it should be unless of course it's a 1 of 1 piece of art where it's always been that the artist signed their work. But hey I'm all for everyone standing in lines to get signatures at cons because I'll be in the bins pulling the best books while they're busy.

Regular original yellow label sigs will not be affected by this… Totally different. One witnessed, no question. One authenticated, which is impossible to do. Totally different, the new JSA books will not go for as much as the original. Who cares if the market is flooded with JSA’s, it won’t flood the original yellow labels. Two totally different things. I agree, it’s impossible for them to authenticate. I can make a perfect Todd Mcfarlane signature right now with my eyes closed. I also agree this JSA thing is just dumb and a waste of time / money. I won’t ever send one or buy one. Original yellow label or blue only for me!
