So whatever you feel is the 'main idea of the poem' is always correct. And youd know it because you feel it. 1) I think Ondaatje is just making an absurd list of things that possibly sound terrible. But more than that they are listed as thought experiments. something to cast your mind out into the realm of sense and experience. It starts off as a (cont...)
It actually means quite a bit. You're just too stupid and impatient to appreciate it. A scorpion being pushed through a glass tube would create a terrible scratching noise, would it not? What he's saying is actually plain as day if you'd take just a second to truly think about it. You belong on that list of annoying things in his poem.
