What amazes me about artistic people like this is... they see the finished product before they even start. I would not know where to even start on an old tree stump. Damn, I love to see artistic people work their magic on ordinary things.

It’s beautiful! Some have said well they expected more. Uncreative people don’t get it. With minimal tools they trimmed. Could you do better? Could you have a vision for what started out as a whacky looking stump? Or walk by it. He washed it good, spray painted it in natural woody colors. Would those who say not much there be able to pick the right colors to make it look more natural? Would they know the right placement of the glass tops? The sealing of the paint would prevent any insects.
Some of the not so impressed watchers reminded me of what happened to me when I started my hobby animal artwork 25 years ago. I was in my plaster of paris mode. I never could get the right plaster to water combo. Too dry or too watery. Anyway I showed one of my pieces to the apartment building’s receptionist who said what’s the big deal! Anyone can fill something with plaster, put plants in it and an animal replica in it. But she sure didn’t mind taking that piece for free! So I said if you think anyone can do it, you try it! Show me how to do it better. So a couple weeks later I asked how her project went since she was so condescending. “It didn’t work.” She said. I said see? Not as easy as it looks. It took years to figure out how to make everything stand out so your eye isn’t drawn to one thing.
To some a soup can or sardine can or an empty cigarette pack doesn’t look like much. I put my stuff on top of the cans not in them using cardboard. Some cardboard works better than others. To some a frozen pizza box is toss away. I can get thousands of paper pouches out of it and glued on wrapping paper and trimmed make good patterns depending on paper. Taught myself how to make fans out of wrapping paper. Never seen anyone else do that. I layer paper punches on like scales. Takes a lot of time, patience and a good set of tweezers with pointed not flat edges. Never seen anyone else do that. That empty and stuffed cigarette pack no longer looks like one. Acrylics for me work better than enamel. Picking the right animal figure, animal sticker, the right beaded borders or beaded fringe, the right ribbon or roll of mesh experimenting with wrapping paper on things without wrinkles isn’t easy.
I save a lot of stuff. I did a sardine can animal artwork using on the outside uncooked spaghetti. Then I dry brushed it with brown. Looks like wood paneling. I had to teach myself even how to dry brush by watching others. People eat spaghetti. Raw it makes an excellent art supply. I can turn a bunch of used incense sticks into a starburst. The wrong glue the wrong placement doesn’t work. Not so impressive you give it a try.
One would think lining the outside of a can with teabag strings is no big deal. You see it as just strings to toss. I see it as an outside cover and getting each string to line up perfectly straight picking out the thin or thick ones out of thousands requires patience and a lot of glue. But not any glue. I use clear art glue or Elmers. Rubber cement doesn’t work too good. Super glue you have to be careful not to stick to yourself.
Just decided to experiment making flat flowers by cutting up the small teabag cardboard tag. Doesn’t sound like much? Would you have thought of it?
Watching cake decorators I taught myself how to make scenes on top of my boxed animal art. It’s pretty fun making miniature mushrooms out of styrofoam meat platters washed out real good. Or making hedge trimmings into a forest. Not any old trimming will do.
This guy knew the right combo of colors to use. I haven’t mastered that yet. I envy that spray painter’s keen eye to paint that stump in natural wood colors. Not a big deal? Can uncreative people manage that?
To some that plastic ring off a plastic milk jug is nothing. I can take that and make a frontal ornament using cardboard and using the right picture and glue it on without wrinkles. Sometimes it works sometimes not.
I just discovered that if you take a used furnace filter, wash it out good it can be used as a can covering. No big deal? My eye has become so good that I know how much to cut and trim. I learned watching someone else with paper that if you slit top edges you can fold them on the top edge so you have a perfect fit no excess when you glue the slices down. Wish I thought of that but saw someone else do it. Her small project she used masking tape to block off her stripes. Never thought of doing that, tried it on a peanut butter jar top and it worked great, with perfect stripes.
Creative people can take the most mundane things and use it as an art supply. Or at least I can. Scrap comes in handy. The empty baking soda box one would toss I can make into an animal art creation. So you get art on something you others would toss for recycle.
I think this tree stump table is brilliant! These people saw art out of it. Using minimal tools they made an ugly into beauty. For those who say well we expected more, you try to do better. You pick the right colors. You know which to cut and which to leave? Square or round or oblong glass. Hmmm which to choose.
Art of course is in the eye of the beholder. But it’s a lot different to actually do. Sometimes what you thought would work doesn’t and have to think fast to create that mistake into unnoticed. What someone would pass by like this stump, these guys had a vision and they did brilliantly.
