  • This entertaining story takes on a life of its own, told by Brian himself and never before shared in public.
How Brian earned his callsign 'Punchy'.
Having asked Brian long before this, how he received his callsign 'Punchy', Cory Crowell, myself and Brian were having dinner at a steak house in Reno after a long day working Brian’s booth at the 2022 Reno Air Race.
Brian unexpectedly broke right into this story.
Raising my phone and pointing at it, asking for his permission to record, he nodded and here it is.
Recorded in a very noisy restaurant. Thank you Fig and RePete at ‘So there I was’ for making this recording audible enough for sharing.
Hope you enjoy this entertaining story as told by the man himself!
Brian was a Wounded Warrior Project sponsor. With his talks, he inspired many and helped raise many thousands of dollars for organizations like Wounded Warrior Project, Wings of Hope and Rotary International.
    A great friend to many
    Rest in peace brother

I wish I would of had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Brian Shul in person!
I could listen to him all day! Listening to him tell about running into a student years after that particular chewing out that he gave his student pilots that day after someone messed up come up and tell him he was glad that he had learned that lesson later because he understood the value of it was very cool!
Those that listen and pay attention learn to survive. Unfortunately in the business of flying military fighters or attack planes, even in peace time, has its inherent risks and sometimes no lesson in the world may help we just never know.
I learned many lessons like that but none involved flying or aviation. I'd probably have been dead by now had I followed my dream when I was young. Ill never know.
I bet he had a million stories. I loved the LA Speed race story!
    His bird photography is amazing!!!
He sounds like an amazing man. May he RIP!!!

I would have given anything to shake this man’s hand. His story is the only reason I can still support my family and am not on welfare right now. I had given up on getting my med cert for my cdl after losing my leg for about two months and I watched his video one day and it just made something click in my mind. I was back working about 4 months later before I could even walk unassisted.
I sent him a message on facebook telling him my story and thanking him, my only hope is that he got to read it.
