He was quick to draw a wand on us at the Three Broomsticks in the beginning. In a straight fight to the death, which half of these fights are, magic is so stupid lol. A gun is 1000x more effective than a fireball travelling at 20 mph that can be blocked or dodged.
Is a complicated subject. While a bullet sure is faster and easier to fire that the majority of spells (don't know if actually exist one spell faster that a bullet), it can be easily blocked (I think a protego spell casted beforehand would suffice as it can tank other spells like diffindo with the power to break or destroy objects). On the other hand, spells are fast enough to surely hit a target at medium range which is the distance where most duels happen (problem would be casting time, not the speed of the spell). And you can't easily block a spell even less an unforgivable curse (armor don't protect you from a spell effect), and if my memory doesn't fail, in the fifth book harry avoided being killed by an avada kedabra fired by Voldemort only because a massive animated statue received the hit instead of him, and even so the statue was completely destroyed.

The books tells us that spell-making is very dangeruous practice. Luna's mother was one and died in an attempt to make a new spell.
