Agreed. What with the way media is now abbreviated and entertainment has been stuffed into a business mold, it's a wonder anyone has the attention to actually listen in long enough to even hear a song in its entirety. Short attention span theatre makes for shorter and shorter attention. Not that everyone has ADHD, but the way corporate business is trying compress "natural" living, it's no wonder tiktok and things of this nature generate so much money and attention. Not dating myself, but when was the last time you heard about a group of kids sitting down for hours to dissect an album like back in the days? In general, the pace of modern day life is so accelerated, and saturated with instant gratification, most people probably think making a great song is easy. Lyricism isn't dead and neither is Hip-Hop, but it is bound to continue evolving. For the future's sake, I do hope the new generation to come can realize they need to care for the culture's roots or there will be no more flowers. King, enjoyed the video and also the time you put in your craft. Thank you, and long live Hip-Hop culture!

The bar has been lowered in the minds of the people BECAUSE of streaming services.
Only short songs, melodically, simple lyrics so artists bend them selves down to get the "recognition", the clicks, they think they deserve.
There are probably several other factors that come in to play here but that's definitely one of them.
There's still some really lyrical stuff out there but it's becoming a rarity.

For me, the stuff I love has changed. Now I just want to hear music that makes me feel good about myself or makes me feel like the artist, is contributing to society with inelegant lines that cause critical thinking. I don't listen to anything that teaches our youth negative behaviors. Everything we do matters. America is in a bad place and needs lyricists like you to inspire better behavior. The tuff talk these rappers are spiting are counterproductive for society. While creativity is there, the messages are wack. Because of this, my music taste has changed. If it’s not an old school rapper dropping then I’m mostly listening to country rap. Adam Calhoun just dropped a album called country rap tunes. And Ryan Upchurch and Tom MacDonald and Knox Hill. But imo the bar has been lowered for bars.

I think the bar hasn’t been lowered, I think the bar has been set so high by previous generations that alot of songs today come off as mid, I also feel like the last generations of rappers didn’t do a good job of teaching the up and coming rappers, my generation is always being trashed for being too soft and really, why would I as a new artist try to prove myself in that aspect if from the beginning I’m labeled as either a mumble rapper or I don’t have the street smarts and I’m not credible enough because I don’t talk about killing and dealing drugs. And also most younger people don’t give a fukk how many syllables I rhyme, it’s almost corny rhyming too many words, and that comes from older rappers setting the bar really high and from the industry and how fast or short new songs need to be released.
Rhyming is not a form of art anymore, it’s a contest to see how much shid I can rhyme so nobody else does it.

  • @ChuWaferz
    @ChuWaferz Год назад +3

Streaming platforms are backed by record labels. Labels are the shareholders. It doesn't make business sense for streaming platforms to show you peak lyricism because then the algorithm would have to point you toward independent artists who have the freedom to be that lyrical and own their masters. It's more common among independent artists to own their masters compared to artists signed to a major.
Since it's in a streaming platform's best interest to cycle income back to the shareholders (and said shareholders also own the masters most of the time), the algorithm is going to be designed to appease labels regardless of what you search, I'd say. Streaming platforms to me are just labels trying to figure out ways to open up new revenue streams with the same masters that artists relinquished to them via contract. Personally I never used streaming services and built my knowledge for where to look by reading album credits. And by that I mean the booklets that came with CDs. If I liked something, I read the credits and learned the names responsible for what I liked. I've known what to look for and where to look ever since. Nothing can replace doing the legwork, and the price of convenience is always multi-layered. Entrusting music discovery to algorithms crafted by raw payola will only get you so far. Algorithms don't give a damn about you.
The public can't know what it wants to hear until after the music graces the ear, and the labels know this. That's the eternal advantage labels have for better or for worse, but by staying up on the research, listeners naturally escape the majors' curated little ecosystems. It calls for legwork on the fans' part, but this is something fans do automatically anyway. It's not a chore to a fan in the way it would be for someone who isn't as enthusiastic about music.
To answer the question: I don't know if streaming platforms are proof that lyrical standards and evaluation have changed. Major label presence and payola definitely influence the narrative on lyricism and what's perceived as elite, but for streaming platforms in particular, I believe it's just business. They're out to direct you to songs whose masters are owned by major record labels, because record labels are the shareholders. I doubt it goes any deeper than that, at least on their end. By the time the landscape of lyricism gets affected, everybody's already paid. They juggle the money, we juggle the narrative surrounding lyricism. If the narrative is out of control, the community isn't regulating.

People don’t even know what lyrical means anymore. So many people will say “i like this rapper because his flow, punchlines, metaphors, etc…,” i just be like “THATS RAPPING…..” Usually there’s no significance. When i was 12 i dipped my toe BACK into the lyricism side of hip hop and no lie what i favored the MOST out of my playlist of 500+ songs was M.O.P, EPMD headbanga remix w redman, Lupe fiasco (little weapon, etc…,) eminem (apologies, rabbit run, etc..) Joel ortiz tribute to big pun (etc), biggie (gimme the loot, etc…), SO MUCH Masta Ace (disposable arts album, etc…,), Talib kweli- i can literally go ON AND ON, but i’ll stop just so you have A taste of what i listened to at 12 and i still really enjoy these same artists and songs they’re STILL good to me because they were UNIQUE in what they did and they didn’t just do it, they’re voices, they were beyond average couldn’t even confused them A little bit, but now, you HAVE to sound the same so in that sense alone, lyricism is way below par because you don’t have to go too hard on standing out because you must literally stand in the same realm or people will clown you and that’s not even A mystery it’s almost A traditional relationship between artists and fanship. People won’t listen to you sometimes if you sound too fresh you have to have some sort of compromise with your sound to sound like something they know just to resonate and i don’t personally believe that because some of our greatest to this day are one of A kind, but let’s say, Eminem is the greatest so i won’t mention his name, but let’s say crooked i for example- Kendrick is arguably the best of the modern generation of Hip-Hop (lyrically) he’s capable of nearly everything, but in my eyes he can’t even hold the plate that holds the candle to crooked I. He’s dope, but crooked I is 100% unique especially if you talk about how he sounded when he first came in to the game aside his longevity and progress. Not to say kendrick isn’t one of my favorite, but kids will name A bunch of people and kendrick will be like their biggie and j cole will be like their pac and kendrick and cole are nice, but to me, kendrick isn’t all that lyrical i’d rather hear lupe than kendrick and i’d rather hear nas than cole any day.

After thinking about it more, ya def lower, but even when you go back in time and think about the hip hop tsunami of the 90s the Mount Rushmore of that era were amazing story tellers, great writers, amazing replay with tons of classics, but still not super heavy bars where you had unpack layers and metaphors and intricate wordplay. Reasonable Doubt was my favorite Jay album, but you ask the masses and it will probably be Blueprint. The industry figured out even back then pure bop was how to make the most money so even talented lyrists were pushed into the mainstream lane if they wanted to get a max bag. It's just been trending further to the lowest common denominator over time. The best MCs either stay true to the craft and don't chart huge, or they have to dilute their catalog with mainstream. Em was one of the few who was able to pull it off by pulling in mainstream with some wild ish and some radio hits/anthems and 90% would miss 70% of the bars but those songs worked even if they were missed and he would eventually convert a chunk of those casuals into appreciating bars and the intricacies of the craft.

Daylyt is my favourite rapper of all time. I look at Hip Hop as an outlet to understand my mind and my inability to converse with these zombies we call humans around us.
" I been programmed since a baby, when I woke up my whole entire family betrayed me.
    Own mama said I'm crazy,
    Daddy said I'm crazy.
Both parents be too lazy to read this shit,
    DO YOU SEE THIS SHIT?!"

idk it’s weird, like in a way it has an it hasn’t. Like you can show someone some crazy bars, an people seem to either think it’s cool or whatever but not as good as Crook…or not as good as Eminem or Royce…but it’s trying to do the same thing an is 100% in that category, tho it’s hard to get better than you 3 ya know. So it’s like people either feel they heard it all & the bar is so high like Em said “you ain’t even impressed no more, you used to it”….lol like for real. Then you have other people who I think are confused what good bars are. They think making a bunch of random references or breaking words up making random homophone and scheme things that connect but it’s not really cohesive or done right…trying to make doubles but it doesn’t work both ways, like stretch Armstrong reaching haha. So depends who you ask….I think they young gen like vibes of the sound an bop more than letting the words an message touch them & get excitement by what you guys doing with the pen…Like I love Three6Mafia, I used to bump them all day, & that was some vibes! Party music. They changed the game with their sounds an productions & could spit for sure but wouldn’t call them lyrical. So depends who you ask tbh…imo the bar is very high to be considered in the same category as you 3, an not a lot out there who can do it….so of course people who can’t compete wanna dumb it down which opens the door for more people to get they pockets flush…Lot of hollow fake music these days…
here on RUclips, Grizzy Hendrix strives for lyricism, Knox Hill does as well…ummm Hopsin…Samad Savage…& of course 100 Kufis…idk I don’t know about a lot but those I know all respect the craft an do they best.

Yes, the bar has been lowered. Lyricism does not exist like that in the mainstream anymore. There was a time where you could type in "Underground Hip Hop" in the search bar and get great results...nowadays you get a bunch F grade SoundCloud rappers. Yes a couple might be decent but 90% of it is trash

cant help but think all the music streaming platforms use the same algorithms for specific searches like "super goat level top tier lyricism" and/or "any search", the algo is programmed to show just the average,
if the average is the bar, obviously there is more average shit than the stuff thats above average, but if average is the bar, that means you can sell more products because everyone just wants the average nowadays, thats how and why the bar as you said, was lowered.
i am very picky with songs i listen to and ive been collecting for almost 20 years but what ive noticed the past 10 years you cant even really search for music anymore, whatever you search, unless its the artist of course, nothing will fit you. thats my experience

Crook of course it has music as a whole has been devalued and lower to a sub level of creativity and artistry. But that doesn't mean great lyricists or great artists don't exist they do they're just way harder to find because the majority ofElite music and artistry is being hidden instead of praised. Have you listened to Cambatta yet?

  • @ma.k7601

WHO said that "lyrical" means "technical"?? LYRICAL MEANS THE LYRICS ARE IMPORTANT, i.e the POETIC CONTENT of the song is where the emphasis is. You're looking for TECHNICAL emcees. The algorithm is responding with lyrical music, it doesn't cater to your abuse of the word. 2Pac is a LYRICIST (read POET). Eminem is a technical emcee (read someone who mostly juggles the tools of poetry without necessarily creating poetry). A guy who can do crazy trickshots with a basketball is not necessarily a basketpall player.
And just in case yall forgot: RAP = Rythm And Poetry

Crook, you’re not stuck in the past fam. Getting a record deal is easy to get now. All you have to do is have a good beat and a catchy hook. There’s still lyricists out there but they’re not as easy to find as they were in the 90s and early 2000s. I’m an older dude and some will probably say I’m still stuck in the past but hey, I love lyricists. The new KRS One album, Black Star album, and your album with Joell, are in heavy rotation in my car. Rome Streetz from Griselda also has a great album. All of Griselda is killing it. Coast Contra is also a group to look into. They’re fire.

I think the bar has been lowered, especially in the mainstream. You don't hear lyrically meaningful bars, I learn nothing from mainstream music anymore. That's why I look to guys like you, Eminem, 50, Jay, Kanye and the other GOATS from before you for what i need from hip-hop. I need cadence, punchlines, double meanings, wordplay. I need to feel something but this new music - man, it's just drugs and money, I learn nothing.

Hey Crook ! I had the honor of meeting you a few months back and we got to talk about this for a few minutes. So, Yes it has been downplayed over the years because many can't do it anymore or do it all. I think they're making a lot more off of less. It's like gourmet vs microwavable. I'm beginning to see that in the battle rap community as well. They're downplaying the likes of Mook and Lux when the new comers can't even rap longer than 3 minutes without slipping or stumbling and or needing help from the crowd to help them get it back. That's why many of the favorites faded away during the pandemic when crowds disappeared. I have noticed some mainstream artists use many bars I heard first in battle rap yet I also heard battlers use material from underground rappers like Ransom or RJ Payne. They just take material, rinse reuse and recycle it so no one catches on. Today they consider word association "lyrical". Like Rum Nitty for example.. You could say "I pull up on the side of your whip like a toe truck and leave your body with one hole like a donut" OR "my whips off the hook, no toe truck, bullets SPRINKLE, until you're STRAWBERRY GLAZED, that's a DONUT" and be considered "lyrical" even if they only rhymed 2 syllables and the content is random. They also have the luxury of rapping acapella so their bars can be stretched out to many more syllables from like 15 - 20 and they still don't make use of it by rhyming, just by adding more words that are related to their punch from multiple lexicons. Today, critical thinking is rare and people can't or simply refuse to use their brains and think for themsleves. That's the price we pay for having "information" right at our finger tips. Oh a lot of rappers have also been using rhymezone and simply google for words associated with whatever they're talking about. It's hard to find people under like 30 years old interesting in true lyricism.

On point as usual Crooked, there aren't many "Elite" spitters still putting out contey, Coast Contra i recommend everyone who is a hip hop purist to check out, youngster got bars and swag, other than yourself and Joel and Em i dont reckonize anyone else pushing the pen to have layers behind bars like you guys, tell me if you can anyone who does syllables inner rhymes doubles triples qauds shcemes storytelling homophones to name a few into their pend the way the hoats do? Hell Ems sonh Darkness the whole damn track is a double, whos doing that shit today? Dont get me wrong there are some young guns i like like Joyner, Kendrick Cordea Math to name a few, well Msth not so young but just newer to making songs instead of battling, still though not even them are touching the tools you guys have, its like carpentry, you have framers like the Melle Mel Cool herc BDP LL Rakim and then you have the cabinet makers and then the guys doing crown molding flooring and then you have the specialists who are finish carpenters who can do it all they are masters of the craft who built things from scratch and the finish is flawless like spiral oak stair cases and wainscoting and brand new doors and trime.
    Stay blessed Crooked 👊🏼
