This is a higher level of conversation in regards to rhyming and creative writing. I have never heard any other MC even mention something like this. The closest was Cassidy and his breakdown of syllable connections/wordplay.. These higher level conversations are fascinating and give insight into the intellectual side of the craft of MCing. We need more content like this. Respect to the legend Crooked I. Salute.
Who is this Cassidy of which you speak? He sound interesting, too!
Facts! 🫡
Cassidy fire haven't heard his word play in awhile

This just made me realize the problem ive been facing with my pen. When I start trying to write lyrics i cut off my other languages/voices and dont use all my tools

Does the x stand for the unknown, and the bird sound like singing...twitt pick em
🤔
it's strange for me because i've been influenced by so many different cultures (both on a personal level and an artistic level), lived so many different places, was pushed in an academic direction early on and learned a lot of the literary stuff but then dropped out of college right away, spent time homeless... i have like a hundred dialects in my head, at any given moment, even bits and pieces of a dozen other languages none of which i speak fluently, wordless thoughts and pictures too, and sometimes people want me to stick with just one linear dialect-like "just be yourself" but this is me, lol. a small piece of infinity.
i often go back over my bars again and again, tweaking the language ever-so-slightly to find my truest voice in the context. hip-hop being a rhythmic language, sometimes the syllables and rhymes *have* to kinda bend, blend, and blur with the music and concept... sometimes you have to say "i'm tryna tell you somethin" instead of "i am trying to tell you something" (which is essentially the same thing just said so fast that syllables drop out or become imperceptible). conversational ebonics tend to be more naturally in rhythm, more like a flow of poetry or music, so it's interesting how that becomes interwoven with academic speech and so-called "proper English." our language on the whole is changing every day, as cultures interact more and more, and hip-hop is at the vanguard of that evolution as modern-day poetry... sometimes my more experimental deliveries can sound really whack and off-beat to one person, but another person with a different set of influences will get it, like smooth jazz vs. free jazz. it's funny how much perceptions play a role in hearing (or not hearing) somebody.
Wuttup crook!!!🤘🏼🙏🏼 You got any tips for producers to get exposure??🙏🏼🙏🏼 I would love to make my life all about hip hop and rap..9-5's are killing my soul...🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
BRUH WAS PREACHING LIKE FURIOUS WAS ABOUT PROPERTY VALUE🤣🤣 AND WE ALL WERE TREY AND RICKY🤯💯🫡
That information is useful even to those who aren't attending to be lyricists. Thanks Crook.
Hmmm....this was one of the very first obstacles i had to overcome when i was writing my first verse..in my opinion,if you dont do any of the shit crook mentioned you WILL sound like kodak black...
💎
And this is exactly why I put you,em,Royce,tech9,thought and pharaoh at the tippy top of the goat list.jay z and others that people call great don’t do that.they hit a plateau and stayed there.
When u gain mastery of the language, u gain license 2 use it as creatively as u wish.
Solid advice!!!
This is incredibly helpful, even for an artist that’s been making music & songwriting for a very long time. Writing your lines with natural verbiage is very important because it makes your points concise, and the common listener doesn’t like abstract wording. You can weave in and out like you said, but not making things too complex is a big thing. Thanks for that, Crook.
Crook out here droppin' gems!
i love language/dialect/thought process for writing & freestyle put under this analytical microscope by my favorite artists. thanx again crook, very well said. I wonder if you're following harry mack at all
Thank you for this jewel!
As a inspiring writer, I think this is so helpful for perfecting my craft. Crook when are you teach a class and inspire the youth?
Sounds like someone found the hammer and nail in the toolbox cuz they just hit the nail on the head ......
Thank you boss! This is big
Great advice. Knowledge is power.
Solid lesson. Makes me think of code switching.
Brilliant!
Musicians are taught to practice scales. This is the first time I've heard that concept applied to lyrics.
this is crucial. you are limited to your natural way of assembling meaning and words. and your assembly of syllables, sounds , meaning and words and stuck the memorized way of doing it. so doing in the conscious mind you can have full control of every syllable, flow, meaning, etc, and can create new way of saying things of common meaning of ones truth. im currently working on extracting my subconscious and non conscious thoughts and beliefs, so i can A) understand more of how and why i think, B) become a better and intentional communicator and C) so, i can change state of energy. so with that new understanding, sharper skill, and higher consciousness energy, i could create beautiful god level lyrical order
btw, Thanks Crook for this contribution to hip-hop
I'm not a rapper but I'm also been doing this work to challenge thoughts, beliefs etc, and this video was a good reminder to also challenge my language in the same way
Nobody calling that shit “X” 😂😂😂😂 Shouts out for the knowledge legend
💯💯💯🔥🫡

Awesome. It's great to hear an actual god tier writer and rapper break down the craft. One way to do what you're saying is, to identify rappers with flow and vocabulary that you like but find yourself unable to do, and figure out why you can't do that.
I remember back in our high school poetry club, my teachers' mind would get blown from the way I would mix words from our lessons with "hood slang". I had English 1st period, then 2nd period I basically had a free hour because I was a teacher's assistant, so by lunchtime I had a whole verse ready for poetry club. lol Everyone would be like "You JUST wrote that?" 😅😅 Shout out to Mrs. Dutton, Mrs. Ogata, and Ms. Fenton for putting me on. Dinuba High - Class of '08.
💯 Have a blessed day. Stay healthy and be safe. ❤ nothing but love. I just wanted to say. “Jump off pyramid point without a parachute and land on the roof of the corner store.” 😂
Damm never thought of that..thanks for the different perspective..that helps more than you know 🙏
appreciate this OG, I do some of that already I do think its cool...noone listens to it tho, and the algorithms wont push it cuz its politically progressive so Im just rapping mostly to myself...but atleast I got more shit I can bump in the car or at the gym lmao!
This is extremely dope knowledge , respect!!
Extremely well put Crook! Definitely some of the best advice I’ve ever heard!!
I call it Twitter also and I’m loving this convo 🏴🏳️🏴
So important, complexity means nothing in music if it is not presented proper.
This is the type of condos we should have as lyricists. Thank you
Your the man crook… Living Legend!!!
thats how i freestyle. the trick is to get my conscious mind to tap into the unconscious by simply focusing on a topic or a word.
I'm not a rapper but I still feel like I can learn something here. I've noticed getting into the same speaking habits as I get older, and it feels limiting in a sense. I also started saying "like" constantly in my sentences, it's like I can't find the words I want to say, didn't use to be that way.
No how Harrison & Liam doing bro?
🙏🏿
