As a beginner the difficulty I have just encountered is when playing the d scale on the d string and then crossing over to the open a string my fingers are touching the a string just enough to cause to cause it to buzz.
Hello Nancy, there are a couple strategies that you can use that will help you with your pinky. First of all, if you drop your thumb that will help you raise your fingers up so they can be at the proper curvature. Also, when you go to the lower strings like the d and g, make sure you move your elbow over to the right. When you move your elbow over to the right, it will help you prepare your hand better so the reach is not as far. Hopefully you can understand what I'm talking about. perhaps my next video should be about left-hand preparation! Anyway, if you have any other questions just let me know. Happy practicing!
Question: off topic, Have you watched John Mangum play the fiddles he builds? I ask because he seems to have a lot of bow wander. You mentioned, in bow placement, that it xauses scratchiness when you wander with the bow, and don't keep it in the middle placement area. Why does John do this? Is it laziness?
As a general rule, fiddlers are not classically trained and usually have pretty bad technique. They can usually get away with it because most fiddle songs do not require a lot of technical prowess above the first position and most of the songs play on 2 strings at a time and this requires quite a bit of physical force that negates the need for a lot of subtly in arm/hand movement/placement. 👍

After placing your fingers on the D string, pick them right before you play the open A/right before you place your 1st finger on the A string.
