I thickened up the soil layer by a good 5 inches and gave them ladders and branches to climb on. I even added springtails to make the enclosure bioactive so we don't have to disturb them with cleans. They now have a big saltwater dish that they can fully submerge into and i bring them fresh veggies. The fact that these guys are taken from their homes is still horrific, but I'm hoping that my info and care can make sure they have a good life in a loving home atleast (and yes, I have denied MANY sales to people who want to care for them improperly)

$50 for CB crabs sounds wicked low tbh for an animal that is going to live nearly half a century. I've paid many times that for reptiles. Even many tarantula slings, which not only are produced more easily but are also more fragile, are more expensive. I definitely think they have an advantage in that it has been well established in other hobbies (reptiles, amphibians, fish) that CB is more expensive and worth more than WC. I think with enough education it should be easier to convince people of the benefits.
I completely agree, $50 seems insanely cheap considering the lifespan and the amount of work required to produce captive bred. I think most ethical keepers would rather pay a higher price to ensure that the wild caught trade isn’t being supported.

I moved to the Midwest recently from the southwest. I went to a small town festival. It kinda had the feel of a very small fair. There was a booth with a roulette style table. The people would pick a color to play. The vendor would then put a mouse in the center and then spin it super quick and the mouse would hang on until it slung into a slot that was colored. Beyond that alone; then I saw kids and random drunk people walking away with a little box with a messed up mouse. Nobody was probably prepared to take it home and give it a life. Then you see these fish in plastic bags. Same thing……at least the fish weren’t centifruged!
@@greensun1334 I have never returned to said fair. Locals say it’s normal for around here. I tell them I don’t care, it may be, but I just can’t be around it.
I've been watching her channel. I grew up with hermit crabs & unfortunately, we did the basic care that the beach store told us. Well, now, yrs later, my youngest son just took over our cousins 5yr old hermit crabs. As soon as we got them I could tell their shells were to small & they weren't very active. We have really given them a fresh start. They've changed shells several times, & I've just been progressing their tank as I can. My goal really is for a set up like hers! I love it. I could watch them for hrs! I'm working on their pools & trying to expand their tank. Money is super tight right now so I'm trying different things & hoping to fully get there. But I love love her channel! Thank u for all the wonderful tips! We have 2 happy & now very active hermies!
Great interview! CSS has definitely helped me after 5 years of crab keeping, to be able to provide a better life for my crabs. I had no idea they were a 40 + year commitment until doing some research during quarantine. I have been following CSS and LHCOS ever since. My neice also loves watching the CSS videos while she colors, and loves helping with feeding and tank maintenance. So when she's a little bit older, I will have a breeding buddy to help start breeding my own crabs. Keep up all your hard work, and thank you for sharing!
On boardwalks near the ocean hermit crabs are sold everywhere and offered these tiny tanks, while hermit crabs are given for free with the purchase of an enclosure of any size. Some have plexiglass with a giant hole and people just steal them. It’s really sad. And they always have painted shells
CCS videos are so fantastic and we’re so valuable in my crab keeping journey. Their videos are engaging and fun, easy to follow and well put together. Thanks for giving them the opportunity to expand their following and get crab info out to more pet owners.
aaand this is my sons fault - we were on vacation in OBX and walked into a store... at 5 he loves animals and was immediately drawn to the Hermits - I talked him out of it while he was kicking and screaming that this Must Have Pet... I mentioned we aren't ready that we need to do some research... that was last week - and now I've found this - thank you so much this is eye opening to what I was sort of expecting from these little critters.
I am so happy you found this episode of the podcast! It is truly remarkable has skewed the average perception of hermit crabs are. If you do end up getting one, definitely go check out crab central station, they have amazing content!
Thank you guys so much for this! I just discovered Crab Central Station and have been watching their videos on Crabitats. This video is so educational and Darcy you did such an amazing job on questions to get this amazing info! Just fantastic overall for both parties!!!
Hermit crabs are absolutely amazing! Hey were my introduction to the hobby side of exotics/specialized pet keeping so it’s great to see them get talked about. Will definitely be watching CCS’s journey with their little babies 🦀
I think it's so precious that, getting your daughter and yourself some cute little hermit crabs has turned into saving the hermit crabs. Serendipitous. Brava darling brava.
Wow not sure how I found this channel but I am enjoying it so much. I watched a couple videos and I just subscribed!!! I look forward to a few days of binge watching!!
Glad you found the channel! Thank you so much for listening. I recorded a follow up episode with Darcy last week, it should be out in a couple of weeks. So keep an eye out for that!
Pre internet our family got 2 hermit crabs while on vacation at the beach. My son was so enamored with them, I couldn'tsay no, back then we were renting a condo, no cats or dogs allowed. The hermit crabs seemed like ideal pets for our son. We were told they were a great pet for young children,, required very minimal care.. We were given very poor information about how to care for them. After we had them for a short time we knew their needs were not being met but back then with no internet, no valid care info available in the books in our local library system and being unable to find anyone that knew how to care for them we failed them and they died within a few months. We knew they were not eating properly, not drinking much from their drinking sponge. My son wanted me to do something to save them and I remember feeling really helpless that I was unable to. We tried different foods, I tried different ways to try to get them to drink, we did have a lot of extra natural shells for them, probably the only thing we did right. All in all it was a really sad experience. I'm so glad that there is better info now so people will care for hermit crabs more humanely if they decide to have them as pets.
My best friend just gifted me 1 hermit crab! I'm so glad I have it! I understand how you say they are abused and neglected before you get them! I plan on doing everything to change it's life!
Great informational video. Thank you both. I had recently set up a bio-active terrarium, and thought about adding crabs to it. I had no idea that crabs were strictly wild caught. All very much appreciated information.
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast I was iffy about subscribing, since I don't really keep up with reptile info and will probably never get any myself. But now you've forced my hand with curiosity.
@@-Liska haha excellent! Thanks for the sub. The episode recording got postponed due to a massive storm in Texas (power outtages) earlier this week but we've rescheduled so it should be released sometime next month
Awesome episode! Mind literally blown. Seems hermit crabs would a perfect mashup between my fish hobby and reptile hobby. Hopefully the advocacy the hermit crab community is doing will reach the right people that can start to enact some control over wild taking.
This was eye-opening. I didn’t know that hermit crabs have been actually bred by people in captivity. I was aware of Crab Central Station, but I didn’t pay attention to eat enough until now. I thought that hermit crabs are just disposable pets marketed to kids. I thought that it was impossible to keep them in captivity long-term, because they are too complicated. Also they were mostly absent from reptile and invertebrate shops, and I thought that they aren’t worth keeping by normal hobbyists. I didn’t know that these can be kept normally and even bread. Congratulations to anyone having such kind of determination to succeed in this. Bottom line, to breed hermit crabs you must have the patience, and also the visual acuity and coordination of a surgeon.
I was in the same boat as you, I had no idea! Truly incredible that there are people out there with enough patience and determination to pull off such a complicated task.
Fascinating! I learned so much here. Inspiring work! I'm with you, the animal science at home that's happening these days is incredible. Ground floor stuff, super cool!
I was never particularly into hermit crabs, but I suspected they were really being abused and it was part of why I never wanted one. This was just so informative and enlightening! They are not throwaway critters! Plus why they may seem "boring" is they're in a tiny sparse setup that doesn't allow them to show all their natural behaviors!
Exactly! Allowing them to display natural behaviors is key. ps. I just released a follow up conversation with Darcy this morning, you might enjoy it as well: ruclips.net/video/N0GJ5Ob6tvs/видео.html
Hermit crabs rule! Crab central station is my go to place for hermit crab care. I learned so much from their videos. I’m so happy that you guys are talking about industry. It really brings to light the dark side the industry. Education is key!!!!
That is terrible to hear. That this animal has. And can still be treated that way. Thank you for letting people know about. The importance of natural habitat. And natural treatment. Of the animal.
It is country that we’re socialist/ communist that are doing anything for cash it is 3rd world and places like China. They have to provide to those taking their money or die.
@@PunchingCacti - Your understanding of what "Communism" is (former China, Russia, etc?) is actually just State Capitalism (which is, capitalism). Communism is a cashless, stateless, classless society. Something China and Russia never were, and never actually intended to be. Their State Capitalism can be defended in part due to being so fucked over by other countries, so they didn't have much of a chance, but that is what happens. State Capitalism does indeed suck (so does all Capitalism, but anyway, hardly going to do a deep dive here).
Thank you for this. I worked in the pet industry (stores & manufacturing) for a decade and have kept all types of animals. Perhaps I didn’t think deeply about where they came from but I think there’s an assumption they’re captive bred since order lists usually say which animals are wild caught, but there’s no specification with hermit crabs on those lists. We tried to care for them properly in the stores but, as she explains, there’s so much erroneous information to sift through.
I come across this. I keep shrimp. Hearing that how this is being marketed is shocking in the EU they are nowhere near native and never on "sale" here locally. Happy about that .. we sell hamsters and bunnies :/
I am just loving this video! What is your favorite species of land hermit crabs and why. Also what species would you recommend to someone who is serious in spending the time and money.
Thanks for watching the episode! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Those are some great questions, I would head over to the crab central station RUclips channel and make the same comment on one of those videos. They will have an answer for you!
My favorite species has got to be the strawberry hermit crab! Although they are more fragile, they are so active! Exotic species are difficult to find in the US, I would wait until captive breeding brings exotics to the US if that is where you live. However, the best investment for your money and time will be in purchasing captive bred hermit. crabs.
My mom had a hermit crab. The crab sat in a dry aquarium. He/she dried out and died. I believe there was a bowl of water in the terrarium. The crab lived longer than two months. We had other shells. They look weird without shells.
My new hermit crab has a painted shell! And I know that it's so 😭 sad! I know I'll have to always go and pick up shells for it to get into. I can't wait to see how it looks after I do that!
Whaa....??? Being a teacher is not a full time job? In summer there's continuing ed classes, and when school is in session, it's not 9 to 5.... you grade papers until the wee hours, and then start working on your lesson plans. Sorry dear, you can't fool me. You may have a little time off in the summer, but your job is very much full time, and I salute you for doing it. Your job is essential for all parts of our society.
I love HERMIES!! (I had to rehome mine since my kids were TERRIFIED of them & thought they were spiders…. they flushed a couple of them for that reason!!
This was a very educational and interesting video! I'm definitely subbing. I can't currently get any reptiles or other pets, but would love to someday. I am subbed to many herp channels, and even some specifically T-related ones (weirdly, even though I'm scared of spiders a bit). This was so interesting! I originally wanted to go to college for Biology regarding sexual behaviors in various animals, so the breeding aspect of all of this was extremely fascinating for me. Great job, everyone!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Welcome to the channel! I recorded a follow-up episode with Darcy earlier this week, it will be out in a few weeks so keep your eye out for that 😀
What if you slowly siphon trough a large air stone or filter sponge wrapped in a filter bag to distribute the suction and filter them out. You could attach it to a float valve so that after the water level reaches a certain level it stops. Then all you have to do is add water and throw away the old water.
I was at the pet store last weekend and a woman picked out a hermit crab, I was behind her checking out and she asked questions like “What actually is a hermit crab?” “Is it dead?” “They need to DRINK?!” (After the cashier recommended a sponge) and talking about how gross it is. I was thinking Jesus lord lady. The cashier had to literally talk her into buying food for it. I was behind her a good 15 minutes while she was dumbfounded learning that this thing needed food and stuff. She also told me rats were poisonous, all I could do was nod my head because if I opened my mouth I was going to laugh
Super interesting vid. Even more so the fact that most of us viewers are feeding live roaches to our reptiles and tarentulas etc, but some of us are still chocked at how hermit crabs are treated ._.
yeah just got 3 this weekend!! geez daily food...much better than I eat...daily water...weekly water change...damn my 5 y/o didn't know what he signed up for!!
I've always loved these creatures, played with them at the beach. When I was little I wanted to take them home and my parents taught me the beach was their home and if I took them with me that was like kidnapping them. Now when I go to those same beaches you almost can't find a hermit crab at all. Years ago I first saw the painted shell crabs in Miami bayfront mall. I was horrified bc I just knew that was wrong. I also noticed how large they were compared to the ones I could catch on the beaches.
ALSO have branched out into hermit crabs, MANY years ago…. I LOVE watching them- for hours!!! Interestingly, I have noticed that most reptile folks DO have one other thing they branch out too… me, hermit crabs…. other folks: beetles, centipedes, birds, tarantulas, discus fish, & various other fish, arthropods, crawfish, etc.!!!
I do have a question tho! Bottled water super expensive when using it for everything crab related. Would the gallon jugs of nursery (the kind u'd use to make baby formula with) water work as well?
Yeah I still can’t believe how much work and dedication CBB hermit crabs take! Their dedication to at home citizen science is very impressive as well. Thanks for listening, TC!
It’s so sad. Know where I live you can’t just go into a pet store and buy a little turtle I think when I was a very small child I can remember seeing a turtle in a pet store but we’re talking like 86 I’ve actually was looking into getting one as a pet but they literally are not like to be sold so I guess certain states you can’t just get them in pet stores like you could years ago be interesting to see if that’s true for all states. I was amazed at the amount of work needed for hermit crabs I was looking into getting one as a pet and honestly God I had no idea. This is so horrific the way they’re treated . So here’s my question are people going into these beach shops and explaining the care needed for them certainly they would be open to more care because if they die they can’t sell them.?
It’s a good question, however I don’t think the beach shops care. Most of their sales probably go to people who are on vacation and end up impulse buying the crab. I don’t think the seller cares that the crab ends up dying prematurely. Very sad
I do find it strange that explaination for the baby crab not growing without adults. Not sure if that's true but it would make more sens to me if they needed to eat adult poop to get bacteria that would help them digest for example.
just wish selling pets with no information as this was becomes illegal and reminds me of when people buy a goldfish and a small bowl or tank with no clue how bad that is for the animal it likened to keeping a whale in a bath by some websites

Is anyone else fascinated and amused by the crab wheel in the back ground, lol? It looks like a hamster wheel for crabs. I had no idea that was a thing. I love it.
Yes she is! I plan on having her on again in the near future for an update on the crabs ☺️
I absolutely loved this episode!!! Their love and passion for hermit crabs is infectious! I am now subscribed to their channel. :)
It was both very enjoyable and refreshing to get a glimpse into another realm of exotic animal keeping!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Cary 😁 we can learn so much from the other exotic animal keepers! I’m very much looking forward to following along with their breeding projects 🙂
Wow! One of the most interesting topics. I love when i turn on this podcast and i learn something new and get inspired. Thank you for broadening my pet keeping horizon and for fueling my🔥
Thank you, Erika! I feel the same way, I love recording episodes outside of the reptile sphere because I learned so much 😁
I’m a reptile/fish guy but I subscribed because of this video. I like your “pro” style. It seems natural but this was a very good unconventional pet video/interview. Great Job!
Thanks a lot, Francis! Glad to hear you enjoyed this podcast, if you haven’t seen it yet, we did an update with Darcy only a few episodes back. You’ll probably enjoy that one as well
Darcy was my main source of information when I was building my hermit crab enclosures. Love what she’s doing, love what you’re doing. Thank you.
Yes, she's fantastic! Thanks for watching!
*Thanks for listening, What an incredible story! Don't forget to check out the show notes for all links mentioned in the episode!* www.animalsathomenetwork.com/93-crab-central-station/
It's really sad that the word "throw-away-pet" exists. Thanks for this informative video!
Yes, it is! Thanks for watching!
@@Tina-M4 that's cruel af. I hope those cowards get what they deserve in life.
@@greensun1334 I have never returned to said fair. Locals say it’s normal for around here. I tell them I don’t care, it may be, but I just can’t be around it.
@@Tina-M4 seeing that as "normal" is pretty sad, isn't it?
Talk about dedication- I love these women
No kidding! Aren’t they incredible?
That’s amazing!
CSS does incredible work! 🙂 thank you for watching the episode! Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for having CCS on and spreading the word on hermit crabs!
Thank you for watching episode! It was a pleasure to have them on
On boardwalks near the ocean hermit crabs are sold everywhere and offered these tiny tanks, while hermit crabs are given for free with the purchase of an enclosure of any size. Some have plexiglass with a giant hole and people just steal them. It’s really sad. And they always have painted shells
Yes, that is so sad 😔 Let’s hope that changes over the next couple of years!
Fantastic job Darcy@Crab Central Station. Thank you for being a voice for our very loved hermit crabbies!
Thank you for tuning in, Angela!
Go check out LEON THE LOBSTER!! His owner rescued him from a grocery store! It's been about 191 days now and he is thriving 😁😁😁😁.
Awesome, I will check it out!
CCS videos are so fantastic and we’re so valuable in my crab keeping journey. Their videos are engaging and fun, easy to follow and well put together. Thanks for giving them the opportunity to expand their following and get crab info out to more pet owners.
Thank you so much for watching episode, it was an absolute pleasure to chat with them!
aaand this is my sons fault - we were on vacation in OBX and walked into a store... at 5 he loves animals and was immediately drawn to the Hermits - I talked him out of it while he was kicking and screaming that this Must Have Pet...
Thank you for watching episode Betty! Glad you found it so helpful ☺️
Hermit crabs are absolutely amazing! Hey were my introduction to the hobby side of exotics/specialized pet keeping so it’s great to see them get talked about. Will definitely be watching CCS’s journey with their little babies 🦀
They are such a neat little creatures! Thank you for listening to the episode 😁
Props to you and your family's efforts for hermit crabs. Great video, Animals at Home.
Thank you for watching the episode! They are an incredible family
I think it's so precious that, getting your daughter and yourself some cute little hermit crabs has turned into saving the hermit crabs. Serendipitous. Brava darling brava.
I agree, I love that they’ve made it a family project!
Yes, that is a sad and all to common experience! Hopefully over time that occurs less and less!
Absolutely no idea how I ended up here, but it was really interesting. Thanks!
Haha yeah the RUclips algorithm is running wild with this one 😂. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
My best friend just gifted me 1 hermit crab! I'm so glad I have it! I understand how you say they are abused and neglected before you get them! I plan on doing everything to change it's life!
When she said the crabs like spicy food, I started cracking up 😂
Great informational video. Thank you both. I had recently set up a bio-active terrarium, and thought about adding crabs to it. I had no idea that crabs were strictly wild caught. All very much appreciated information.
Glad you enjoyed it! I am recording an update episode with them later next week, you'll have to keep your eye open for that!
Yeah, that storm had us worried too. The sky was hairy looking here south of Austin.
This is amazing information and a truly quality podcast. Subscribed and headed to Crab Central Station, next!
Thank you for heading over to our RUclips channel!
So have you enjoyed it! Thank you for subscribing, I know you will enjoy Crab Central Station as well 🙂
Awesome episode! Mind literally blown. Seems hermit crabs would a perfect mashup between my fish hobby and reptile hobby. Hopefully the advocacy the hermit crab community is doing will reach the right people that can start to enact some control over wild taking.
Thanks, Natalia! And that’s a great point, they are a perfect combination between the fish in the reptile world!
I never would have imagined hermit crabs would be so interesting. Great podcast!
Me either! I’m so happy I had them on, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about hermit crabs. Thank you very much for listening!
I came across this on accident and glad I did! Loved the information and learned so much!! Ty both of you!!
Thank you so much for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁
Fascinating! I learned so much here. Inspiring work! I'm with you, the animal science at home that's happening these days is incredible. Ground floor stuff, super cool!
Yeah the conversation really blew my mind, love the at-home science!
Horrifying, thank you for educating and being their voice.
Thank you for watching!
Hermit crabs rule!
Crab central station is my go to place for hermit crab care. I learned so much from their videos.
I’m so happy that you guys are talking about industry. It really brings to light the dark side the industry. Education is key!!!!
Yes, CCS rules! Thanks for watching!
I just adopted 3 hermit crabs. Her channel is sooooo helpful!
Awesome! 😁
That is terrible to hear. That this animal has. And can still be treated that way. Thank you for letting people know about. The importance of natural habitat. And natural treatment. Of the animal.
Thank you very much for watching!
Thanks for having crab cetral station they are fantastic. Your doing a great job too.
Thank you so much for watching!
I am searching for hermit crabs and this video was a load of information. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you found the episode!
"B-but it's not real capitalism!" Seriously though, it's an absolutely horrendous practice and needs to be outlawed immediately.
Yea lets do communism so that everyone is starving and has to eat their pets LMAO
@@PunchingCacti Ew gross. I like to keep what I've earned thanks. 😆
Happy about that .. we sell hamsters and bunnies :/
yes, shocking indeed!
This was an absolutely fantastic and informational podcast
Thank you very much for watching!
I love watching the crabs using the exercise wheel
Haha same here, so cool!
Darn that kit was cheap! I own 2 crabs and my total was $105. I study crabs and this was very interesting!
Thanks for watching, Mark!
Awesome! Good luck!
Thank you so much 🥰
Hi there, I wish you a very happy new year. Always support your channel
Thank you very much!
Yeah they are neat little creatures!
That’s a really great idea!
Wow, how ridiculous!!
I really enjoy these podcasts!!
I’m happy to hear that, Christina!
Super interesting vid.
Even more so the fact that most of us viewers are feeding live roaches to our reptiles and tarentulas etc, but some of us are still chocked at how hermit crabs are treated ._.
Yeah, very good point! The discussion of the welfare of our feeders is certainly a can of worms that I will eventually cover one day
yeah just got 3 this weekend!! geez daily food...much better than I eat...daily water...weekly water change...damn my 5 y/o didn't know what he signed up for!!
I love how at 15:20 Mr. Hermit goes for a ride! 🤣
Haha I know right?! 😂
Yeah, they are very interesting little creatures!
Great interview!!
Thank you!
As humans we should be ashamed for the years of abuse that we have done! We can improve though. God bless you all ❤️🙏
I do have a question tho! Bottled water super expensive when using it for everything crab related. Would the gallon jugs of nursery (the kind u'd use to make baby formula with) water work as well?
Yep! That would work 👍🏼
Is there a way to filter the zoeae from going into the syphon? Such as with a nylon stocking? Or would it hurt the zoeae?
Yes, actually there is! I just released a new episode with Darcy a couple of weeks ago, she talks all about their new filter system
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Nice!

Thank you for a great video ❤️
Thank you very much for listening, Krystal!
Very sad
WOW! This was so interesting and cudos to the hobbiest scientists.
I completely agree! 😁 Kudos indeed!
I do find it strange that explaination for the baby crab not growing without adults.
Not sure if that's true but it would make more sens to me if they needed to eat adult poop to get bacteria that would help them digest for example.
Very interesting theory! That would make a lot of sense
Amazing and informative.
Thanks for watching!
I don't know why I am just now finding this channel. Come on logarithm. This is great. I have a lot of catching up to do
Glad you found the channel! Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the other episodes as well
Hello dear FRIEND
THANK you so much for great SHARING
greatting form INDONESIA
Thank you so much for watching the video!
Wow. I had no clue. Amazing!
I know right?! So inspirational.
People selling hermit crabs don’t care, whenever I have bought them they never have water.
Yes, it’s very sad!
I feel every animal should be regulated regardless of what they are, and if that animal is livestock it should be marked as such
i wonder if a similar process could be done with similar species like Halloween crabs and patriot crabs
Good question! Must be at least a similar process!
Fascinating!. This is all news to me..
It was news to me too!
Awesome video!
Thank you for watching!
God forgive me. I never knew, I’m ashamed of the things that I have done in my ignorance. Those poor creatures. I didn’t mean to do them wrong.
Education is key! 🙂
just wish selling pets with no information as this was becomes illegal and reminds me of when people buy a goldfish and a small bowl or tank with no clue how bad that is for the animal it likened to keeping a whale in a bath by some websites
Completely agree!
