"And then he is covered in molten gold, that must feel horrible, wow..."
Nope. firstly, he loves gold, hence the hoarding. Secondly, it's not MELTED into his skin, it's been basically ACCEPTED into his skin, by his own skin, from all the sleeping on that treasure. So I would expect it to be quite on the contrary - to be a pleasurable feeling for him.

Really enjoyed watching these ruminations and it's gotten me back into your content. They've inspired me to rewatch the whole series with a more critical eye. As an aside I don't think it can be overstated how important these works were to the fantasy genre.

The Mirkwood scene, especially when Bilbo emerges from the tree canopy into the beauty of the sun, reminds me so much of a mushroom/acid trip. I thought there was no way actual psychedelics weren't influential to the design of the scene. Maybe my favourite scene from the whole trilogy.
    I'm loving these ruminations!

I know I am about two and a half years too late, but I am glad I finally watched your LotR and Hobbit ruminations, since all these movies are incredibly important to me. And for me, your opinions on the Hobbit trilogy are a breath of fresh air. In my experience, it is pretty hard to talk about this trilogy, because there is just so much bashing and so many complaints to the point where people are absolutely appalled when they hear that I actually really like these movies (oh and even more so when I say that the romance was fine in my opinion) and immediately try to "set me right" and "prove" how bad they are. So thank you a lot for doing what you do and talking honestly and sincerely about these films.

I agree, the ending was one of the greatest cliff hangers I've ever seen. Absolute chills. I remember sitting in the theater staring at the credits, slack jawed at what I'd just seen

Mirkwood: I kind of percieved it precisely the other way around: something this terrible and scary and bad... when you elevate yourself above the human position, suddenly you can see its existential beauty

One inconsistency with the fight scene between Gandalf and Sauron is that Gandalf was the carrier of Narya, the elven ring of fire. If he had lost to Sauron with the ring, he would have claimed it.
On Smaug’s intelligence, he does seem a bit dumb, but it could also be the result of the same gold sickness that Thror suffered from after centuries of lying in that sea of gold. He also hasn’t faced any challenge in centuries, so the frustration may be to do with actually having to use his brain for the first time in a very long time.
The “desolation” of Smaug could also refer to the desolation that exists around Erebor where once was a thriving kingdom of men as well as dwarves, rather than simply the desolation of Lake Town.
And yes, that ending was almost perfect in its chilliness.

I just finished watching this rumination series about the hobbit trilogy. First of all.....Well Done....Well Done...
The effort and passion were definitely evident. I greatly enjoy these films as well despite their obvious flaws. My brief take:
    1) I really enjoyed the first film, because it captured the spirit of the book most to me.
    2) They could have just made Azog the Bolg character from the book and used the fact that A dwarf(Dain) had killed his son Azog as a reason to passionately hate dwarves.
    3) Legolas would have been in that timeline, but increasing his fighting bravado was inconsistent with who he would become in the LOTR series. It's like he was on Elven Steriods in the Hobbit Trilogy with anger issues and then lost weight and became more decisive with his fighting tactics in LOTR.
    4) I thought Alfred had a purpose in DOS to reinforce the political corruption of Laketown. That being said, it would have been more fitting if he died with the Master of Laketown. His lust for power with the Master ultimately killed him.
    5) I'm not a book purist, I've read most of Tolkien's work and have enjoyed these films, but sidelining Beorn in the Battle was a travesty. In the books he helps turn the tide of the battle and he destroys Bolg and takes Thorin off the Battlefield. Who wouldn't want to see that?
    6) It was originally being made as two movie story and then PJ and Fran went to WB to stretch it to three after they already started filming. I saw an interview with Jackson where he definitively states it was their idea, not the studios. I understand wanting to tell more story, but that put way too much pressure on everybody including himself.
Overall I think this Trilogy was great if you consider the context of the pressures when it was being made; Studio Lawsuits, Deltoro having to bail, PJ having to Direct with a 5 month deadline, no preproduction time(Lotr he had 18 months!!!), being hospitalized with an Ulcer a start of filming, and WB forcing the Love Triangle during reshoots(Evangeline Lilly admitted to it in an interview/RUclips It)

I always felt rather bad for anyone who didn't know the Hobbit, saw the cliff-hanger ending and thought "Oh wow, the next film of them trying to defeat Smaug is gona be sooo epic." instead, Smaug is dead within a couple minutes.

The infamous Elf/Dwarf love triangle is certainly very contentious in both of the latter Hobbit films, but it's worth mentioning that they were planning on setting up a dwarf character with an elf character back when Del Toro was actively involved in the project. At one point, Eva Green even auditioned for the role of Tauriel! It was only afterwards during reshoots that either Warner Bros or New Line executives told Jackson to shoehorn those scenes in, despite being pretty inconsequential in of themselves.
For my money's worth, the scene between Kili and Tauriel in the dungeons of Mirkwood when they're talking about seeing the world and Kili's mother is a legitimately good scene. It shows that while there is bad blood between Elves and Dwarves, the younger generations of both sides are open to peace and friendship, which is elaborated more on between Legolas and Gimli. It also makes a certain character's death more impactful in hindsight.

we are not in a period of flowering in the Hobbit, rather, of a stopped waning
Remember, Lothlorien, Imaldris, arguably still Minas Anor... these are remnants of an old greatness, an old dyeing power.... still able to do good, still able to keep things afloat, they are timeless gems, yes, but also, fragments of the wholeness that once was.

Great points! And well Organized & Presented video. And as you mentioned, there are many Filler-Scenes and plots- but even though not really true to theme- adds a lot. And as for the ORGS, they aren’t fully explained. The Bad-Men, Yes! Explainable. But Orgs? Will they ever break away? Grow? Or just simple Soldiers Of Bad? If so, bad character fill. Good Vid. Keep them coming.

for me the canopy moment is more the idea that evil cannot reach everywhere. just like happened with Frodo and Sam in Mordor that they did see beauty through the clouds of mordor, the stars that no darkness can dim... but thats me ;)

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 7 лет назад

Also the idea that evil hides and thrives in darkness, while the light cleanses and purifies - not an idea I entirely agree with, but one that's present in the books and the movies.

Thank you for this rumination series on The Hobbit Trilogy. It’s throughly refreshing to listen to an in depth and well thought out analysis of these films, as opposed to a compilation of vastly over-used and oftentimes asinine criticisms. I completely agree with you that these films, despite being flawed, are great. I do have to contend with one of your suggestions, namely, that Smaug is stupid. To me at least, it didn’t seem as though Smaug was an unintelligent character, but rather an extremely prideful and arrogant one who is easily angered and flustered. I say this because suggesting he is stupid seems to be directly in contrast with the level of intelligence he displayed in his interactions with Bilbo (he guessed that Thorin Oakenshield and a company of dwarves were here and sent Bilbo to do their bidding, that Bilbo and the dwarves came from Lake-Town, and that Thorin promised Bilbo a share of the treasure in return for his services, all from a few pieces of information he gained from Bilbo and his nose). However, when he makes poor descisions in his chase sequence with the dwarves, he is extremely angry and frustrated. Hence, one can, it seems, justly state that Smaug is very intelligent normally, but very reckless and stupid when frustrated, as opposed to simply stupid or intelligent. Regardless, I thought this was a great video, and you’ve certainly earned my subscription. Keep up the good work!

Thorin was the heir of the Mountain, so naturaly the enemy wanted him eliminated nearly as much as - I presume - he wanted the son of Arathorn to be killed and Dunedain ppl told everyone that the heir died for some sicknes in his early years (3 years old or smt?). Becouse they knew he will be hunted. In both cases the enemy got the good reason for this :)

Bree is a frontier town, both for the Northern Kingdoms, and what is left of the classical kingdoms of Men... though fairly democratic, it is a power vacuum & sell-swords, a place that gathers the exiles of many wars, remember, whilst the darkness had not gotten a kingdom yet, their are many abandoned kingdoms, many collapsed states, and many wars going on in the hinterlands...
we are not yet in the period of the rise of evil, but we are in a time after the collapse of the empire of the good.

Why do you keep putting down Karl Urban as Eomer? I pretty much dismissed "Fellowship" until I saw "Two Towers" and it was Karl's character that actually drew me into the story and invested the time in it. His acting was amazing, and the scenes where he tried to protect Eowyn were touching. The scene in ROTK where he finds her body on Pelennor Fields was heartbreaking. So I don't understand why you keep ragging on him.

The versions of Thranduil and Legolas shoehorned into the Hobbit screenplays were ripping of Lucius and Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise. Legolas does change his priorities, as we expected Draco would - who expected Harry Potter to be so ridiculously deterministic as the books turned out to be?
Tauriel should have been allowed to have freckles like Evangeline Lilly does. She should not have taken Aragorn's type of healing in Mary Sue style.

my real problem with the hobbit movies starts with this one: it's like they had too much scenes they wanted to cram in it while also not making them 4 hours long like the original trilogy movies(extended) and it comes off as a succession of rushed scenes that needed more time and better structuring. It gets much worse in the third movie but it starts in this one as well.

Peter Jackson's character hasn't aged a day... Why do Legolas and Bolg have a thing? Did Bolg kill his mother? Your perspective on Smaug and his low intelligence made me think twice about how easily he was tricked during their battle, though the bad editing where he resumes his conversation with Bilbo straight afterwards still bugs me. Smaug's first scene with Bilbo is easily the best part of the film. I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but aside from Smaug, what was the other dragon that terrifies you?

Your video game analogies are quite appropriate. "Elites" "Orc as points". The problem is that this is not a video game. This is a narrative story with characters we are supposed to care about. When there is no jeapardy and the action scenes are cartoony, it takes all the emotion out of the movie.

I don't have a problem with reading into anything, even if it's just some goofy thing meant for laughs. Authorial intention is, indeed, a very important part of any work of entertainment. But, if you can see something and get some meaning or insight out of it, that is perfectly valid - whether the author intended it or not.
A perfect example, in my opinion, is in the novel "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. During all the dream sequences when the character of Ender is imagining all sorts of things, Card himself said that he didn't intend anything with the imagery - it was all just stream-of-consciousness stuff from his perspective. I won't give spoilers but I will say that the man's subconscious mind must have been working on overdrive when he wrote those passages.
Oh, and also include me in the super-small minority that actually liked the Tauriel-Kili romance.

  • @RollerDerbyHigh

Really really liked this rumination. I agree so much about romance in general and also tauriel/kili. I hear so much negativity but I appreciate having one god damn woman and she is used to explore the themes of this trilogy. I prefer the interpretation that Smaug is smart, because he knew it was thorin behind the plot and he was trying to sow doubt into Bilbo about thorins intentions. However the imo too-long Smaug fight made him look dumb. If it was shorter and they only pulled off one trick or so , then he'd seem more competent. So given the movie as-is it makes sense that he's not so smart

Oh... and Merkwood?? Filler. Could have a total separate movie. Like the Storm Giants. “ The Founding Of the Giants “, “ The Wars Of the Giants “, Or the “ Voluntary Slumber Of the Giants “, would have made better 3 movie add-Ones than filler, and only mentioned in 1-2 sentences in the original novels. Enough of SPIDERS! We had 1, that scene was enough. Sam comes to show his worth. Too over use of appeasing to eye-candy and youth market. Like the a “ Pirates Of The Caribbean “ ride. Unless you’re pandering to 14 year olds. At least Gandalf felt “ Human “. But Love-Interests “ and complications? And in the books, SMAUG doesn’t feel he is below anyone. Why think he is “ Involved “ , Working Equal with any Evil Lord? Makes no sense, do a show on that item- who is Stronger. A Dark-Lord? Or a Dragon! I’d buy that for a dollar!
