@@keitha.563 and @david burns. I really did go to all 5 nights. Met a girl on the second night, May18th, saw her again on 23rd, 24th and 25th. We lived over 100 miles apart but met up again that summer. We got married in May 77 and by Knebworth 79 we had little James Robert. We are still very much married and little Jimmy is now 44. All five shows came to a total of £12.50 ( £2.50 per show ). That's what I call a bargain. That band changed my life.

Yeah! Allegedly speaking they have all 5 shows on film for personal reference but...i somehow don't buy that. I will explain on my next video.

JCM's detailed research is incredible. For me, it's great to hear his thoughts on the May 23rd gig, which was the one I attended. He's right in that, being in the middle of the five night stand, this gig tends to be overlooked. Even better to hear that JCM rates it as possibly the best of the bunch. Wish it had been filmed like the final two nights were. Despite being desperate for the loo, I couldn't drag myself away from my seat for a single second, including during JB's mammoth drum solo. I had to scarper after Stairway though in order to make the last train back to Devon as had to work the next day. Twenty years old when I saw the gig and will turn 70 this year. Still enjoying the memories of seeing my favourite band of all time though.
My uncle saw LED ZEPPELIN at the Atlanta pop festival when they were still called: The New Yardbirds! He knew Jimmy Page but was unprepared for the vocals of Robert Plant and the rhythm section of Bonham and Jones!
The live version of the rain song is a force to be reckoned with… that song holds great memories for me and my first girlfriend…

The video quality of the Earl's Court footage on the Led Zeppelin DVD released years ago is outstanding. Even Robert said in an interview back then that he was amazed at how good it looked and sounded.
That Led Zeppelin DVD set is a must the sound quality is outstanding and shows a lot of care was put in the remixes. It's also a testament to the bands evolution and spans their entire career. Highly recommend buying it.
Indeed it is, tho it is my understanding that all of Bonham's drum tracks were fed into a computer which then triggered "samples" of his drums, so as great as it sounds, and it DOES sound great, it is in fact NOT historically accurate as to what it actually sounded like on those particular nights.

Even on their worst night they were better than most bands. They were just 4 extremely talented musicians not afraid to take chances and I think that is the way music should be personally… thanks for another great episode.

The Dallas, Texas 1975 version of Kashmir - where Jonesy alternates between his mellotron (for the verses) and a phase-shifted Fender Rhodes electric piano (for the bridge section) - this arrangement provides great contrast - I love this version!
This is a great observation indeed. This was on my first and only CD bootleg i had, Dallas Texas 1975. The problem with the mellotron is that it sounds and i will use this word carefully, but...goofy man. It just can't replicate the orchestra. On The Rain Song it works because it's texture.

@@isaacshaver6218Tony Banks kept using until 1978. Then on the Duke Tour Tony replaced the mellotron with a Prophet 5 synthesizer (on One For The Vine with the Yamaha CP 70 grand piano) or the Roland String Synthesizer through a chorus on Afterglow and Los Endos.
The San Francisco portion of Dazed and Confused is one of my favorites live highlights. I know that they reprised a bit of the chord structure in Achille's Last Stand but I really wished that they had developed it into its own song on album. It's a moody, melancholic and very moving piece that I so enjoy playing on the guitar.
Maybe i can take the challenge and do a What if? Hehe. Yeah that arpeggio section is amazing, i learned it once for a tribute band back in 2006...never forgot it, it's very special.

The Dm7, and Em7 progression , is very interesting. I have always wondered why it sounded as if page was holding back or just trying to scratch and claw his way through the solo on that night. Very good call amigo.

The 404 joke was always my go to when i played tribute bands hehe. Glad you enjoyed the forensic dive, Zepp live was so much better than even expert magazines say you know? They were SO , SO GOOD.

No Quarter at Earl's Court is a real winner. I listened to No Quarter from the 23rd and it was great, but the 24th is still my favorite.

I was at the opening night. I taped it and listened to that tape over and over again for the next ten years or so. It led me to believe that the version of No Quarter that night was probably one of the best versions they ever played. Your insights into WHY it was different are fascinating. For my money, this explains how they each challenged the other to go above and beyond. I can remember that it was one of the moments during the show when everything was clearly audible, as though the sound man suddenly got his act together. Turns out this was reflected on the tape, perhaps explaining why I listened to that song over and over again. A transcendent moment.
Remember JCM, Karen Carpenter didn’t even want to be named best drummer in 75’, she got a lot of slack for that, she’s no Bonham but IS a fantastic drummer and singer!
Oh yes. I personally admire Karen's musicianship. Her passing was a real tragedy. Her voice was unique. Yes they could be syrupy and corny, but she touched people's hearts. The Carpenters' first album is great.
Your work is outstanding, to produce all this is just utterly mindblowing. I learned so much and love the attention to detail (the train routes) as well as the humour (404 error!) So much to take in, it needs watching several times, so I will. Thank you so much for your amazing efforts.
Wow, thank you! Always honored to read such kind words for my work as a documentarian. Revisiting these concerts had me going through 9 hours of live bootlegs and i can tell you, it's daunting! But it's the feedback from you guys that makes all the effort worth! Yeah Vance i feel the same way. Actually i would have cut Tangerine and maybe one of the unplugged tunes. Imagine In The Light at Earl's Court, just the perfect setting. Oh man, my OCD is definitely being put to good use, my therapist is happy HAHAHAHAH.
Where do you find these recordings? I’ve never heard any of them and I thought I had heard them all… especially with no Quarter quite different from the movie

Another stellar episode JCM.👏👏👏....I remember reading an interview where Plant says he sang Joni Michelle's Woodstock in the Dazed section because he had watched the Woodstock film the night before the concert on t.v.

Watched from my place in Guatemala. Loved it.
There is a section on the 1977 Seattle show during No Quarter, where JPJ is starting his section for solo and Page steps over it. JPJ stops playing and stands up to yell at Page, making it clear that it is his time. The way he holds the line by not changing key when he plays in order for Page to back off during one section that you mentioned during the Earls Court shows make me think of a interview in which Plant states that the big thing about LZ is restraint, when not to play most of all.
I think i know where, is it before they play the Blues Boogie bit? He does stand up and yells but i don't hear Jimmy's guitar for some reason. Jones was definitely a force to be reckoned with. Really makes you think the controversial decision of not having him on Unledded you know?...Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for part 3!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Just looked at it again, I think its a missed cue from Page that JPJ is all up in arms. From what I gather Page give a small dose of the theremin when JPJ transitions from organ to piano. The other time is where you can clearly see JPJ looking stage left as Page fiddles with the theremin or guitar trying to catch up to yet another missed cue.
Can you share the link and time signatures of these? I need to check it out !!!!

Then seconds later as he walks to the other keyboard the theremin goes off and JPJ looks over with a grin and WTF eventually.

You're welcome Zoso6701! At first the 23rd is not like say Japan 1971 of course, but Robert's consistent vocals really make this show special as a whole. I know the 18th had a boost of energy after the weak spots of the 17th but the 23rd was a bigger event it seems thus the importance and expectations played a part for good. Hope you enjoy the show!
Amazing stuff JCM, so pleased I went on the 25th, I was so lucky🍀 other than the poster and programme there was no merchandise for sale at the venue. Thank you Jose. PS Planty is talking about the Home internationals football matches on the 24th. England beat Scotland 5-0, many Scottish fans were outside the gig trying to buy tickets.

Hey Daniel, such a great comment! I of course had to check Coltrane's tune and yes, it vibes in a similar chord movement but slower. When you say connection do you mean Jones wanted to reference Coltrane? Now you have my hamster wheel thinking man haha. There is a line that you can sing over No Quarter but again much slower, with Jones' liking Sketches of Spain, it is possible he Coltrane'd himself. The AUD version of Tangerine is so much better than any one of the SBD versions imo. The soundboard versions all bury the excellent background vocals of Bonham Jones & Page. Theyre not song birds but hearing all 4 of them harmonize together is way better than you would expect it would be
Yes the soundboard gives the wrong impression of what this song was live on stage. They had a pretty tight harmonizing work there right? Thanks for watching this one!

I am pretty sure Robert shot down the possibility because of his vocals throughout. They could employ some A.I stuff and tools to fix some patches here and there but... at this point i don't think there's a market ( in massive sales terms) for it. Hey Jimmy! Thanks for watching first of all. I believe a Best of Earl's Court set has much more of a chance because we know Robert's voice was not at his best throughout these shows. So i can definitely see Plant not signing a release which is something Page has implied with OTHER archive projects left there...waiting.

…I think Jones’s “onion coat” is actually a matador’s jacket. And yes, the 23rd could very well have been the best night overall. I like the piano concerto from the the 24th though and I believe it to be Robert’s favorite too. Dazed we know was a breeding ground for riffs later used. The ‘72 versions were especially brutal. By ‘75 though you could hear it was ready for retirement.

Dazed and Confused was very dark at EC. I still loved the spookiness of the piece.
Great video, as always. However, don’t forget the single of Trampled in the UK was limited to 5000 and never charted. So I don’t think their performance in the Uk was necessarily better because of that.

IMO, the zenith of Zeppelin's overall popularity, and their performances. After this, it was pretty much the start of the end, although they didn't know it just yet. Too many accidents, too many drugs, too many beatings on random people, and too much crazy behavior in general. It just started to get out of control. I would personally say that their 1970/'71 performances were their best from what I've seen and heard
Robert did a bit of the going down to Yasgur's farm in Seattle and L.A. as well. Prior to that I don't remember for sure but he was mixing up some in '75. Doing For What it's Worth in that spot as well.
He gave Jimmy No Quarter...😂

I think 1975 Yes could! I've always felt it's heavily influenced by 1971's Fragile.
Surprised you didn’t mention the NoQ solo or OTHFA solo from the 18th. Great ones. Like how you noticed the Strat o versy LOL. So there is a photo of page playing the strst with JPJ on bass, and appears to be A, page crouched as if he’s waiting to flip his head up, as he did during those parks on the 24th and 25th. So the story of OTHFA maybe be true but it was from the 18th* However when I listen, I don’t hear it. Maybe he rolled the tone off to try and thicken the sound? Had a new pedal in the chain? His performance is inspired and page playing great. Personally I think some of this best work from 75, a preview for presence

It was taking forever and maybe they were at the point to possibly release a live film of their own. Then shelved it once things finally came together for the MSG and per Grant. “I have the entire concert in film….and when I put it on them tele….no….it doesn’t capture the essence”. From the interview on the boat in 76🤷🏻♂️
For me personally if parched together like MSG, it def would rival it and maybe surpass it for me personally because of the set list.
Page was not in 73 form but excellent form for 75.
Bonzo and Plant were the weak points of the shows imop. 23 and 18th their best shows and highlights from the rest. I give the run a B, and give the nod to Page. They were Page shows. Some sound and performance issues through out but the page, the atmosphere and set was fantastic.
Sadly, Pages swan song (even mentioned by plant on the 25th) and an end of chapter for them. I group 73 (us) and 75 together. 75 was an attempt to continue the 73 wave but add the cherry on top.
However with page finger, plants flu the US 75 didn’t deliver, some highlights and march but... it was a Jones and Bonzo tour. Earls court could have redeemed 75 but fell a little short too but I think the more people listen to 75 they realize there were many WOW moments still in the group. Not so much for me from 77. Esp from page. His solos weren’t good or coherent most of the time. The band not listen to each other, playing over each other.
75 had New epics, Pages playing early feb (Montreal, Phili, NY), Plants voice healing up in March but his stage presence was great( 3.21, 3.24), jones piano and bass work and Bonham monstrous attack.
Earls court, amazing set, atmosphere and page performances. Wish Bonham and plant were stronger
77 was a Bonham and plant tour for sure
Confused about the piano. Was he using a big acoustic piano onstage in the U.S. in 1975? Or did that first appear in Earls Court?
Great episode JCM! I certainly appreciate that you actually do "critique" the performances with clarity and insight. I would say tho, that for a seasoned studio veteran like Page, I find it astonishing that he would have trouble addressing the Em7 chord. Diatonic to C major and containing all the same notes as D dorian (C maj). I mean...all the same notes dude!!??. The fact that his phrasing does seem "odd" at times, if your theory is correct, then that would mean that Jimmy is incapable of using his ears to land on a chord tone...which again would seem unlikely to me, but you could very well be right. So far these Earls Court episodes are already some of my favorites of yours. Great work. Oh and BTW watched your "I cant quit you baby" short, and damn man, you are KILLING IT. Fantastic job man! Cheers.
Hey man what's up! Glad you enjoyed this one. The Em7 Chord dilemma for Page yeah i think it was unexpected you know? Because they had played the Dm7 vamp for so long...and to do this on opening night, that was Savage Jonesy haha. Although i see what you mean with C Major and D Dorian, because he was going for sort of Dorian with Harmonic Minor, it was a tricky one over the bending flare he liked to do. Now, the ON STAGE factor cannot be underplayed, no matter the chops and knowledge, sometimes the live feel can block some train of thought specially over muscle memory sections. What Jones played on the keyboards suggests the whole D Minor approach works but it can fool the ear. Just look at Paco de Lucia's improv on Entre Dos Aguas, he has to constantly move and even on Rio Ancho with Di Meola 1980, not an easy game no matter the level of virtuoso ability it seems. But yeah, trust me revisiting this i was like WHATTTTTTTTTTT. Thanks on the I Can't Quit You Baby words, appreciate man!
Great Episode again! But Rain Song and Kashmir has lost some of it’s magic after the Mellotron was replaced in 1979…in my opinion.🙂

Christian esa es una buena pregunta. La segunda voz/armonía es Bonham tal y como lo hace en Bron Yr Aur Stomp. Sin embargo en Tangerine escucho las 4 voces simultaneas. Hay fotografias de Earl's Court que confirman esto. Ahora que repase los videos del 24 y 25 espero encontrar más evidencia ya que la ironía es que se aprecian las voces mucho más en los bootlegs que sólo contienen audio. I read somewhere - I think it was a quote from Plant? - that they only filmed for their own records, not for release. I was there on one of the nights, I don’t recall which but I know they didn’t finish the encores until about 11.30.
I agree, these nights should have all been filmed. Now they say all concerts were filmed for their personal collections. Somehow i don't believe that because there is a "CAMERA ROLLING" pressure visible on the 24th and 25th contrary to the other nights you know?
