Well done for not leaving it on the ‘shelf of doom’ 😀 I’ve built a couple of Revell 1:144 kits, they are quite nice with much more detail. Quite like doing a quick 1:144 every now and then. Nice build 👍
People are saying that your modelling isnt right and its done wrong, but there is no "proper perfect" way to build a kit, its how YOU build and as long as it looks like that plane it should look like, then im happy.
Nice save ! I have the Dragon version of this aircraft in this scheme. It's been on the " to build" stack for a while. Seeing your build of the Academy version may spurr me to break it out and finally build it. It has excellent discreet panel lines and an accurate selection of underwing stores. The only place it falls down is in the cockpit. A blob like aglommeration to represent pilots, and seats,,with no other interior details. I have always liked the look of the Tornado, and 1/144th is my go-to scale for aircraft these days. I live in a small place with limited display space so the smaller kits are simply more practical. Thanks for the video!
@@ModelMinutes Thanks for the reply! If you can find any of the Dragon 1/144th range, I highly recommend them. Although they are getting scarce these days, there is a large number of cold-war era jets and helicopters , both western and east-bloc in a variety of markings. While the parts are often attached by massive sprue gates at times, they are very nicely done for the scale for their era. Decal sheets were well printed and in register, with stencils and weapon decals included. Again, the place where they fall down is the cockpit. I've scratchbuilt interiors with these in my previous builds, but it requires a bit of head-scratching, test fitting and scratchbuilding ship-in-a-bottle style! Thanks again ! Looking forward to see what you build next! Ever try one of the classic Airfix 1/600 ships?
Try the Revell kit, its much better that this and the Dragon kit. The Dragon kit isn't bad but the Revell is nicer to build, cleaner with crisper detail.
@@scalesmodellingmagic5883 it's equal amounts. One part paint to one part thinner. Or in other words, for every drop of paint you add a drop of thinner
The Gulf War is really a war that despite being fairly recent is quite an untold war, brutal as hell, 6 weeks of fighting lead to 30-100,000 Iraqis KIA with the loss of 147 combat fatalities in Coalition forces, 1 day 2 A10 Warthogs knocked out 23 Iraqi tanks, Battle of 73 Easting between VII Corps and 3 Iraqi tank divisions with 4 Infantry divisions, US Lost 1 man killed in action and 1 Bradley, compared to the Iraqi losses as high as 1000 KIA and 85 tanks destroyed, short and brutal war but gets little media attention (only a handful of films made about Desert Storm and Desert Shield)
To be fair Matt points out where the areas are that aren't the best, and its true it's not his finest hour but i watched the vid to the end before commenting. Some models can drain your mojo for one reason or another and fair go to the bloke, he finished it AND completed the video and all that entails.
Wow! you did a great job, I have never done a 1/144 scale model before, but i'm thinking of trying this one to see what it's like. Dunno how I feel about the weathering, personally I prefer a "fresh off the assembly line" look but overall you did a really good job.
God damn, how would pilots in 1/144 look like, even so, how would you paint them... Isn't painting figures in 1/72 already stressful enough? 😅 All in all nice small antidepressant build
I feel like you should take more time when you're building your kits. The painting looks nice, but there are seamlines and gaps everywhere, all of which can be easily fixed with some time and patience.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, i suppose I could take more time doing that - but this one was an "older kit" that I just needed to be finished. I didn't find any joy in fixing the problems with this model. Don't forget that I am a review channel as well - so sometimes I leave these seams and things so that people can see them and be aware of the shortcomings the kit has
The first paintjob turned out to be bad because you can't really mix Tamiya with 'normal' acrylics. Even though Tamiya calls their paints acrylic, they're alcohol based while most of the acrylic model and craft paints are water based.
Beautifully done and a great video build again. I love the Tonka. I built 2 of these. I had exactly the same progress as you. First one was brush painted and I was just a newbie to scale modeling back then. I wasn't too happy with the paint job initially so 4 years later (2020) is when I built one more. This time it was airbrushed and I scratch built a few weapons to depict what this jet carried during the Gulf War. I scratch built three 250kg bombs, the Thomson chaff dispenser, and a JP233 runway cratering bomblet dispenser. Overall the second time it turned out much better. I felt a bit of scratch building did add on to the looks of it. But for an extremely cheap kit it was worth the effort. Please do follow me on Instagram. I'd like to share my work with you too.
I bought this kit today because I saw it in hobby craft when I went in for paint. Cool video
Thanks for watching! I had seen that hobbycraft was now stocking these cheap kits in their webstore
Looks like an amazing tornado
Thanks :D

Bet you enjoyed such a small build. It must have been fun 🙂
It was alright to build, but not as fun as the Airfix Typhoon
Nothing like a Tonka to brighten the day, nice build!
Thanks!

these are excellent points!
The varying tones of the Desert Pink makes it more realistic, given the fairly hasty way in which the Granby Tornados were painted.
:D

Thanks for the info, despite the cockpit issues on the dragon kit it still sounds like it will be a good build

@@jaybe2908 I agree, of all the Tornado kits in 1/144th, the Revell are the best in detail and molding quality. I have two!
does striping the paint also strip the glue
Depends on what the glue is - it can happen but if the plastic is welded together with poly cement it is unlikely
How can you properly brush paint with tamyia?
make sure it's thinned with their thinner - water isn't really enough for it
@@ModelMinutes yeah I have been doing that but I do a 1-2 ratio of thinner to paint but I still get brush marks and large shiny areas of paint

Didn't tutorials have the floppy wings things to make it more aro dynameic
Torndos*
You mean they can "swing" them
Yes
I reckon the new 1/32 Italeri Tornado should be built next👍
Thanks for the idea!

@@PeteCourtier I’m sure it would!
Will you continue brush painting for future models? Great video
There will be a mix of both airbrush only and hand painted only models

nice video btw

@@ModelMinutes Alright! This kit looks like a good place to start, and I won't have to worry about space once I'm done!
Imho:the best academy 1/144 kit is rockwell b1b but asmodern tooling kit it is a bit expensive.(30€).
Thanks for the info, might have to look it up
I was in class when this was live so I missed it
That's a shame, maybe next time :)
I was at scouts
Same here
I like the tornado because one time I sat In the cockpit I have the revell tornado
nice! That must have been a cool experience

Really love your builds bro keep it up
Glad you like them!
i buy academy 1/114 mig 23 a long time ago and the variable swept wing doesn't align properly so i left it untouched 😂

Recommendation:
Use tamiya extra thin quick setting. Smells awful, works great.
Thanks for the tip!
If the smell really bugs you, then use Mr.cement S or SP, they work very well, better than tamiya extra thin cement from my experience
