- Directed by Ub Iwerks, and quite possibly animated by Iwerks himself, and probably some of the animators in his staff, among which were Shamus Culhane, Al Eugster, Berny Wolf , and Norm Blackburn. "Hell's Fire" premiered on January 6th in 1934, as the first cartoon in the second and last series starring Willie Whooper.
While out exploring, Willie Whooper and his pet dog happens to fall into a volcano, the largest one in the world mind you, which in fact turns out to be the earthly entrance to Hell. Having befriended non-other than the Devil himself, and his beloved pet-dog Cerberus, Willie and his pup ends up helping Satan contain his house-guests.
This short gives us an interesting glimpse of some of the historical characters worthy of eternal damnation in the warm confines of hell, in the eyes of Iwerks and his team. Among others this includes Napoleon Bonaparte, the personification of the US Prohibition, a fiddling Nero, and a dandy-looking gentleman with a rather Hyde-esque alter-ego(quite reminiscent of a similar character found in one of Ub Iwerks earlier cartoons, "Soda Squirt" starring Flip the Frog: • Flip the Frog in "Soda... ).

Iwerks was brave enough to be the first to make adult-ish animated cartoons. I think without iwerk, we wouldn't have networks like adult swim
Wow. I’m studying older cartoons so I can make my own cel animations. I really like Ub Iwerks’ style! I also love how simple the color palette on this cartoon is, just red and blue.
the artists sure hated prohibition
It certainly seem that way!
So Napoleon, Nero, Rasputin, Cleopatra and Marc Antony, Dt Jekyll/Mr Hyde, no clue who the last two are
Simon Legree and Muhammed.
Amazing quality! Thanks
Nice to see you enjoyed it, the pleasure is all ours! All credit to the makers of this wonderful cartoon, and those who have preserved it for all these years!
in all honesty this is a rare moment in color history
A masterpiece for sure!
Yeah ... take that prohibition.
Seems like the producers of this short had quite a clear message about prohibition 😅
holy fuck its Tim Dillon
Okay, can anyone just tell me please who are, respectevely, the folks that I see from timestamp 1:39 to timestamp 2:12?
Too bad this was released about after the end of prohibition.
