    56:00 you were so concerned with fire you forgot about ice... think of it ultimate dack tap and steal any 2 permanents and draw 2. Steal the library and cradle for the rub ins!

    This really restores my faith that you can win vintage cube without combo (burn, artifact, reanimate, storm et al), white weenies or ramp/natural order. That said that last match is why I always pack bolt/fireblast/fiery confluence/etc in my UR decks as being able to burn out an opponent that channels/reanimates a giant threat has won me many games even if it's not full on burn combo. Anyway great content as usual!

    • @Alkoholwioslaidziwki
      @Alkoholwioslaidziwki 6 лет назад +1

      CBlastoise That's what I thought as well. I mean, I could see an argument that it's not an insane combo outside of storm since it's basically discard 2 draw 3 for 2u or 1u untap 1u. Thing is, he already had gearhulk and dualcaster, both of which turn ancestral into draw 6. So, yeah definitely stronger than a half-off signet.

    • @_Baleful

    In this Cube I've found if you're able to, siding an Animate Dead or Reanimate is very helpful. The amount of times you're dealing with Reanimator is super common. Being able to easily hose a common strategy/archetype can greatly increase your chances of winning the Match.

    Dack has continued rising in my pick order...and it was already high...picking it over just about anything except power and i even took it p1p3 over a mox pearl in a grixis deck...had it alongside Ashiok and Liliana of the Veil in that particular deck...had a turn where i cast Baleful Strix, +1 Dack discarding Gdaddy and Sheoldred, cast Animate Dead on PapaGDog, drew 7 turning on Shelldock Isle, activate Shelldock to cast Recurring Nightmare sacrificing Strix to get back Sheoldred...long live Vintage Cube!!!!

  • @dalemackenzie4320
    @dalemackenzie4320 6 лет назад

    I don't understand what you were meaning at 57:03. Fire deals either 2 damage to a target, or 1 damage to 2 targets, so you could have killed oracle...

    • @helderboymh
      @helderboymh 6 лет назад

      Dale MacKenzie when you copy a spell everything stay the same for the copy (modes, targets etc) unless otherwise specified (duelcaster allows you to chose new targets), so since he chose for the original to have two targets the copy has to have two targets.
      That's why he could not chose for the copy to deal two damage to the oracle.

      DaGaukla yeah I think he missed that.
      Maybe he didn't wanna play it because he thinks the life loss is not worth being able to fetch for a second red when he already has the steam vents.
      But him not even mentioning it makes me think he forgot about it.

  • @tedmeyer4321
    @tedmeyer4321 6 лет назад

    At 55:20, I would have ultimated Dack played Ice and copied it with Dualcaster tagetting Oracle and Cradle. Resulting in stealing both of them and drawing two cards. Seems a lot less risky to get the emblem and sets you up good for the next turn by both crippling the opponent and giving you a bunch or resources.

    • @TheFlamespriest
      @TheFlamespriest 6 лет назад

      you'd only steal one I think because emblem says cast and dualcaster says copy not cast.

    • @sqrlmonger
      @sqrlmonger 6 лет назад

      Ryan,
      Correct, a copied spell is not cast (see CR 706.10 - wiki.magicjudges.org/en/w/CR:706.10 ).

    Why is blink of an eye in this cube but not into the roil?

    • @helderboymh
      @helderboymh 6 лет назад

      Jaleb Jay they probably replaced it for into to the roil because it's the newer version of the card.
      They don't have both because that would mean there are two cards that function exactly the same and they (as far a I know) have never done that before. (Wich makes sense because cude is all different cards and having to functionally the same cards kinda goes against that)

    • @blah3423454
      @blah3423454 6 лет назад +2

      They do it with a few cards, Armageddon/Ravages of war and Burning of Xinye/Wildfire, but mostly because they are sort of niche archetype cards not generally good interactive spells.

    • @helderboymh
      @helderboymh 6 лет назад +1

      macs rutledge you copy the spell exactly as it is, so the original spell (once on the stack) had two tagrets dealing 1 to each of them. So the copy must do the same, everything about the copy is the same. The only things you can change are the targets because dual caster says so.
      So now he could only deal one to the oracle. If he had played it correctly he would have target one of the mana creatures and the oracle with the original spell and then had the copy deal another damage to the oracle and one to the other mana creature. This way it would have worked out the way he intended.

    • @helderboymh
      @helderboymh 6 лет назад

      What was greedy about that dack?

    • @Dremin2009
      @Dremin2009 6 лет назад +4

      55:28 he could have got Dack emblem, killed both mana dorks and stolen the Oracle, taking away Oracle/Sylvan value from his opponent, killing 2 mana dorks and taking Cradle from 3 mana to 0 and leaving his opponent drawing a Karn he'll never cast. Extremely likely with his opponent doing nothing that he would have eventually won easily especially with Oracle working on his side. He could have even just got the emblem, let his opponent cast Karn, then use Ice on the Karn to steal it, dualcaster Ice onto sylvan library or oracle and steal that, and be lightyears ahead. Instead he opted to keep a draw 2/discard 2 around with only 17 cards left in his deck and a shelldock in hand...eventually Gearhulk the fire/ice to fire 2 more creatures the opponent plays and steal them with Dack emblem. I don't see how he could lose from any line involving the emblem, whereas the Dack looting isn't great anymore.

      Dremin2009 well he punted by not killing both but had he played it correctly as he intended he would have had killed all 3 creatures.
      His reasoning was that a dack is worth more to him Then having an oracle. Wich I think is correct so I don't think it was greedy and even when you think that's not correct that doesn't mean it was greedy it just means you value those things differently.
      Had he killed both he also would likely have won.

      its in the land slot yes, but it comes in tapped, which is a big downside, and more importantly it takes a draft pick, which is a more serious downside. the odds of you hitting something good with it are actually quite low, lets say you have a very good sneak and show deck with 8 spells cmc 5+ that you are happy to hit with shelldock isle (im being exceedingly generous here, its very hard to draft a deck that good for shelldock isle), thats stil only gives you about a 45% chance to hit with it, more than half the time your isle comes in tapped and exiles a spell you'd rather not cast and probably bottoms 3 other cards youd rather have drawn naturally

      you try to tell other people this nonsense so you get to wheel shelldock for yourself?

      Jordan Rutledge show and tell is bad because we both put something into play, a one-sided show and tell would be a very strong build around ( look at sneak attack, it's quite good and picked early quite often)
      - coming into play tapped is not a big downside, it's a very real down side but it's relatively small: basically paying one mana when it enters to have that hideaway ability is a good deal.
      - you are thinking/talking about it the wrong way (imo), sheldock is just nice value, you certainly don't need to hit big. Just having your land turn into any spell in the late game is quite strong. If you add on to that that you get the cast it for only one mana and at instant speed you'll be happy with most any spell, excited about a 3+ CMC card and game winning/changing with a 5+ CMC card.
      - yes it costs a pick but unless you are drafting really bad you are going to end up with 26+ playable cards. Now you should not pick it up over an actively great card that you are looking for in your deck, but there are plenty of medium cards where you pick this over (charm being one of them)
      - your last point about bottoming cards that you want to draw is (to put it in hard words) nonsensical. It's 4 random cards from your deck maybe you want those but chances are just as good you don't want them and now you are 4 cards closer to the cards you want. Its the same argument people use with milling: "but what if I mill my good cards".
      - lastly lsv has been playing cube more then most any of us and is really good at magic, if sheldock was not as good as it appears to be he would have figured it out by now.
