I'm relieved to see that every artist ist sometimes.
Someone told me that you should never ever post your fails, because it will be bad. For me that's not the way. Seeing that everyone fails sometimes is more couraging and motivating to keep on.

This was really inspiring for me, as someone who just noodles around with visual art. This also applies to my primary form--poetry--sometimes, you have to air the bad stuff so you can figure out what to toss and what to keep and work further on.

Sometimes I wish there was a place where artists can upload their art block doodles, no matter how unfinished or horrible. No comments allowed, no likes to be farmed, just a place where people can go and see that they are not alone.

I Think it makes us see more professional artists as human and more easy to relate to when we see them struggle. To know that it's not because we're a bad artist but because we're human that we're struggling. I Think your last portrait was pretty cool actually but I understand that when you're looking at something abstract as a more detailed painter it's easier to criticise yourself but honestly I think it was really cool.

  • @wonderwonder30
    @wonderwonder30 3 года назад +17

I like that fact you showed the art you weren’t satisfied with, it shows that we are all human. Also, your art that you didn’t like doesn’t mean everyone will think like that, I didn’t. It shows that experimenting will not always come out the way you want but learning from it is what we should take away from it. In the process, you could learn a new way to make art and actually enjoy it lol

I just want to say that I LOVE that you posted this video! As a beginner, trying to learn how to 'art', figure out all new art supplies and find your own style it can often be so discouraging to see piece after piece of incredible art and not see the struggle or work that went into that piece, especially as you say, on social media where people don't post the 10 bad pieces that it took to get that one spectacular piece.
It can feel like everyone else just puts pencil/paintbrush/marker to paper and beautiful art appears in an instant while when you try to draw the most basic, generic face for example, it ends up looking like the elephant man's ugly cousin.
It is genuinely such a relief to see that even someone as talented an artist as yourself has days where nothing goes right and all the art (in their opinion) looks terrible. It is a reminder to those of us at the earlier stages of our artistic journey that art is a process which you never stop learning and that's one of the beautiful things about art.
I also think that the fact that you didn't give up, that you persevered is really inspiring. You were clearly having a really rough art day and have been working so hard recently and it would have been the easiest thing in the world to just scrap the whole video. Part of the reason you did push through it may have been that it's your job (although there is a fine line between working hard and overworked - please take care of yourself first, we will always prefer no video to you stressing yourself into burnout) but I think it also had a mental aspect to it. Yes it was tough and you felt like giving up so many times but had you done so it could have knocked your confidence in your artistic ability and created more stress/bad art cycles in your future work. How much better does it feel knowing that you didn't give up? While you may not feel able to be proud of the art you created today, you can absolutely be proud of the fact that you stuck it out, worked through it and ended up making something complete instead of giving up!
Personally, I have done nothing with this box, or the one before with the liquid graphite paints, except swatches so you have inspired me with this video to go back and have a proper play around with some of the more neglected Scrawlrbox items! 😊
Oh, and I actually really love the final portrait you did (the one you kept) - it's such a unique piece and seeing it created (especially alongside all of the struggles for that piece and the ones prior to it) was fascinating to watch!
So thank you, for having the courage to share your artistic process, and progress, even when you dislike the outcome of said process. You rock! 😎🤘🏻

I’m a firm believer that every piece of art has an ugly phase! Some art has short ugly phase and some art has a longer ugly phase. I have really deep issues with getting through the ugly phase without trashing a piece. What I like to think is that we all have a number of art fails inside them, and every time we get one or more of them out of our system, it means that we have fewer left inside us!

The reason why I love Wafflels' videos so much, and also adore this one, is that these videos shows the whole process, with all struggles, re-drawnings, doubts in abilities and everything. I've always thought about art and artists like it's something unachievable to a regular person like me, and such videos show that artists are humans too, not living gods. When I see all the way, it feels so much grounded and possible, I actually want to do my own art. Sometimes someone's "failures" might be an inspiration for others!

no but its really nice to see other art people having bad art days too, especially when they still show what they managed to make, even if its unfinished or absolute mess compared to the usual art

Often when people mention "art block" they refer to not having inspiration to create art but for me personally I legitimately have days when I feel like my hands aren't working like they're supposed to and every drawing I do turns out bad and not anything like my standard level, so it's nice seeing that represented in your video!

WE need more content like this. I struggled a lot with my art (and I still do) because everyone posts their best and most polished work so I didn't know that it was normal to be frustrated and sometimes you do art that you end up hating. I grew up thinking that I am never going to be a good artist because no one told me the expectations were too high and unrealistic. This video is so important

Thank you so much for this video! I love how transparent you are about your process. I often get so discouraged looking at professional artwork because every piece looks so polished and refined. It's really encouraging to know that even professional artists have this experience.

hi, i think its great that you posted this video! when i see artists sharing their art, they always share their most perfect pieces, almost as they never do anything wrong and they never feel like giving up on something. And that always makes me feel bad about my art and myself, because i mess up a lot, things almost never look the way i want them to look like and i give up on a lot of my projects because of constantly failling. Seeing your video made me realize that things are not always perfect like some artists try to portrait, that there's a lot of doubting, a lot of mistakes and everyone feels that, not just me, and that's ok. I think artists should definitely share more of their failed pieces, and not try to always portray that they are perfect and make no mistakes. Thank you so much for you video!!💕

  • @SvdB1992
    @SvdB1992 3 года назад

Thank you for being so open and transparent about how some days things just don't go the way you like, and honestly videos like this are so important? Validating that just because you have one off day doesn't mean that your creations are worthless or that you should stop creating. If more people had told me that when I was younger, maybe now I'd be more daring with the things I do. Now as an adult, even though I want to draw and want to learn to draw, I find it hard to start because I have close friends whose artwork is so beautiful. I struggle with not comparing my drawings (if I ever do them) to theirs, even though I know it's not logical or fair to compare them at all, when I barely draw and she's drawn for well over 20 years. Videos like this are very very important to people like me, where you don't see the finished piece, where you see the struggle, and where you can learn to overcome that

Love this video! I'm sorry you had a bad art week. I appreciate you uploading it and your story, as you are so right, young artists need to see that even the best do unfinished, experimental work behind the scenes. I remember going to a Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition and being blown away by seeing scribbled pencil sketches by Frida alongside her finished paintings. I LOVED seeing that even Frida Kahlo did scribbly fast sketches, so I don't have to be ashamed of mine! This is why they call it "art practice"...it takes practice! Specially when learning new mediums and experimenting to see what resonates with your work. I forget that so often.
Also...creating a video is a highly skilled artwork in and of itself. Doing that on top of MULTIPLE paintings in one week? Not to mention all of your other work and life tasks, that is all so much to deal with! So many people aren't even capable of doing one of those things, let along all of them! You are doing amazingly. Naturally, it will feel like a slog sometimes. I hope you have a better day (just for yourself) today, tomorrow and moving forwards.

I think doing art box challenges is much more difficult than it might appear when just watching, since normally it's either a new medium or one that you might not use every day. Practice makes perfect even in art so doing something out of the ordinary is way harder. Even though you usually make it look easy I appreciate all your efforts and struggles. Keep up the good work 🙂

It’s ok to have off days! Thanks for this video. I know you work hard producing them for us to enjoy. And, don’t throw away those art boards! You can gesso them and they’ll be ready for some amazing artwork in the future.
I will say that heavy body acrylics are difficult to work with on small canvases esp without any acrylic mediums. Unless you’re going to use up the whole bottle of paint in thick layers. 😉. They really should have included at a white, too....

I actually really appreciated this video. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to the clips where you were getting frustrated. I wouldn’t mind watching videos like these again. 💖

As someone who recently yelled at a painting that just was not going the way I wanted it to, I agree the frustration is relatable.

Thanks for sharing this. I absolutely love your work and it made me feel better to know that you have struggles sometimes too. The art I shared this week wasn’t good and I was afraid to share it but I did it for others to see it’s ok to struggle.

Oh I have for sure had my share of art that is downright horrible and no one will ever see. :) Acrylics are kind of hard to get a hang for first-timers and trying to use something other than a brush isn't always the best way to go.

Thanks for posting, I had heard from people that August’s scrawler box was a hard one, I think your kitty had herd the gossip as well! He was himm what ya doing mummy ahhh new box um hang on is this August scrawler box ...... ahhh right so out of here. I think your blue one was looking ok and the one you finished with was fine too. It’s great you pushed on, must say though I am supper happy my subscription starts in September. Hope your in a better place, you are very inspiring and helped this old girl pick up a brush and restart an old passion. Thank you for a video that shows us we can’t be happy all the time but push through find new ways of applying and sometimes our journey will be frustrating but just like rain or snow (very cold here today so thinking snow yes it’s spring but well it’s not jumping in) sooner or later you can find the joy in these and on this journey hey presto you’ve done art. Kitty break very cute, I know this as our kitty came to watch as well ... must go buy toy mouse. Lol.

It's good the show this part of being an artist. It's also showing that doing what you love for work is different than doing it for fun (sometimes). I will stop using a supply for months of even a year.. if this happens to me and I need a good nudge to start (trying) again.. or remind myself that it was because I had a bad day but I still have to learn how to use the supply.

Every artist I've seen so far with this box has ended up adding white. The artist print has white so I think it's not only fair, but needed. I also think the artist print has black because I've seen some artists try to make black from the supplies provided, but it's not as black as the artists print. I think your artwork was cute and it's good to know I'm not the only one who struggles at times. The purple/magenta-ish one was actually my favorite. Thank you so much for sharing

It looks like a lot of people struggled with this ScrawlrBox!
So, I actually really like that purple/blue negative space portrait you did, one of the 'failures', but I can understand how in the moment it was just too much.
Well done for persevering! I had to give up and eventually create a collage page out of it.

As much as it sucks to show things you're not proud of, it really helps me that you did. When you only see the best artwork it's hard to feel motivated. Like how can I ever compete? But you have off days too and it just feels real.
I hope your art struggle has moved on tho.

I'm glad you did post a video, even if it wasn't what you wanted to post. Personally, I think that it's perfectly okay for you to have a bad art day... it's a method that you weren't familiar with, the paints were thicker than you are used to and you weren't feeling it. The last painting in the video was beautiful! Her eyes were so expressive!
Hopefully, next week's video will be easier for you to do.... or at least more fun to do.

Thank you so much for this. I recently experienced the same thing. I wanted to be creative but I just got so frustrated that nothing was turning out. I let go of what I was trying to do and just drew. I was able to make a decent piece after that!!!!
