I'm realizing something new watching this 12 years later. She definitely and intententionally made the decision to have, "No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgender life," be the pinnacle of this performance. She's literally on the top of the stage. Belting these words. And has a church organ blasting. Like this performance feels like yesterday but this took place during the marriage equality era in the U.S. For that I am thankful. For Lady Gaga, I am thankful.
All of what you mentioned is disgusting. Gays are disgusting that men are made for women and women are made for men and there is nothing scientifically called hormones that make you gay stop being so stupid and think about it
The whole thing is perfect, but everything from"Don't be a drag / just be a queen" onwards is iconic-queer brilliance - she's absolutely Mother Monster here.
Her arriving in the vessel as a metaphor for being reborn when you start loving yourself will always be one of the most iconic moments in the history of Pop, no matter what anyone could say... this is pure art here. Not really. Like she encouraged a lot of people but she didn’t save an entire generation that’s a huge stretch to say that. What she has done doesn't need to be wildly over exaggerated to still be insanely important and worthy of being part of history, and I think that it actually kind of shits on what she actually has achieved when people feel the need to over exaggerate it, it makes it sound like they don't view the straight plane facts as extraordinary enough on their own. there are billions of people on earth and most weren't impacted by her even one iota, not even a tiny bit, BUT she did make a lasting a history making impression on enough to be a global influence and she did save the lives of many of her die hard fans all over the world. This is the most Iconic Grammy Perfomance! I just rewatched it again, and giving me goosbumps...joy of of tears..... Lady Gaga made my teenage time so meaningful!
*LADY GAGA* was the FIRST pop icon in music industry's history who sang about EVERY SINGLE LETTER in the LGBT (when ya faves were afraid to even say that), and she's the first who advocate for TRANS people in her music, and all of that was in one hit song called Born This Way. The whole record is dedicated to the LGBT and the people of color. Not even mentioning that she sang it at the Super Bowl in front of all the dusty conservatives (155m people). WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO STAN!
Diana Ross, Cher, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Queen, Annie Lennox, Boy Georges, David Bowie, Elton John, Grâce Jones, Kylie Minogue, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Gaynor... say HI 👋🏻
The first time she ascended those stairs, slammed that church organ, and sang "NO MATTER GAY STRAIGHT OR BI LESBIAN TRANSGENDER LIFE" lemme tell you I was REBORN.
I sang this song to my Aspie (Asperger's/hfAutism) son when he was young and I had to teach him about music!! God makes no mistakes. BTW...he loves music now at 17.
How is that even possible ??? Dancing while singing live and singing exactly like the studio version ?!?! And all this creativity in this performance omg .... SHE IS AN ICON
When are you comeing back to finish the telephone we are your little MONSTER gaga gaga i like to hear for you thank you ps your music is brilliant gaga ❤❤
watching this as a teenager when you're still trying to figure yourself out, this song was the hug I needed back then, made me feel like i trutly belong and there's nothing wrong with me. thank you forever gaga ♥
The fact that she is high heels... The fact that she is singing and dancing, playing piano... The fact that we are ending 2022 and this is still ICONIC... LOVE YOU GAGA ARTIST OF THE DECADES
This performance always brings me to tears. Looking back 11 years ago this being performed at the Grammys was such a history changer. She helped a lot of people feel more loved than they were before. Of course it didn’t fix everything but she opened everyone with open arms no matter who you are and that is just so emotional for me. Everyone deserves to be happy and loved
This is EPIC. She is already a legend . Gaga changed the industry ... she showed us fashion, eccentricity and madness ... her voice is magnificent and her old songs are commercial but the lyrics are really good . She is an icon of pop music and I like to see her evolve and try with jazz ... love u Gaga
GAGA is one the Best Vocalist now. She ranked as an A+ Vocalist. her tone and techniques praised by Music Critics. SHE'S CAPABLE SINGING MELISMA, But she's not doing overly. Her Head Voice can be so thick and operatic, her low notes are so Dark and Full. Amd she can sing any Genre and slay it. Must watch her sound of music and national anthem's covers, etc. and btw her national anthem cover is ranked one the best under whitney. :)
Honestly.. I will always love lady Gaga.. because when I didn't think I was beautiful, when I felt like I was a waste of space, when I felt like I was abnormal, I felt like she was the only one there for me and through her music I was able to be myself, and accept myself, and love myself. I will always love her.

Still till this day I will never understand how people dissed this woman for spreading a message for a community she is apart of, a community that wants nothing but peace. They called her weird, they told her no, but she didn’t back down, she and this performance is the definition of art and equality. I am so proud of how far she has come and the way she continues to persist and push forward. The media back 11 years ago was sooooo sexist, homophobic and could body shame who ever they pleased. (The media is still very much the same now). Regardless I believe the Born This Way album inspired so many people and pushed forward a bigger message, even now it empowers so many people race/sexuality/shape or size/gender etc. I love this woman so much for everything she has done for my friends and family apart of the LGBTQIA+ community and for my friends that are POC, so thank you Gaga for everything 🥰
It was an easy way for them to get people to ignore/dismiss what she actually said. "She's weird, ignore her!". All she ever preached was kindness, equality, and empowerment - they felt threatened so had to undermine her.
When the organ starts I collapse inside because I know what's coming. She gave me the confidence back then and still to this day to have a voice. Back story... My family watches the award shows every year and the fact that she made this statement changed my life because they saw a world famous musician tell the world to wake up and my family finally understood that day during the performance that I'm not an outcast.
It’s amazing how what some people considered a “trendy artist” managed to stay relevant for so long. She’s like a chameleon in every sense of the word.
Shes a triple threat, incredible performer, amazing actress, and a social media sensation. She is always ahead of her time an instead of following trends she makes them. A fucking icon.
@Ares an award given by MTV VMA for mastering in three or more fields because Gaga is a musician, an actress, a fashion icon, and an activist. Tricon is so special because Gaga is the first awardee ever
Yess!! I think it’s also her continued support that also keeps all her fans here. Because yes she’s one of the best singers I’ve ever heard but ok personally I used to feel super connected and safe whenever I listened to her music as a kid. And now I’m older I now know I’m an enby lesbian but back then I had no clue. And yet some sub conscious part of my brain knew her music was going to be my safe/happy place for over the next 10+ yrs. I love Gaga and always will because her music helped me feel loved when my family didn’t ❤️🌈

Even 11 years out, this performance, this version of this song is my absolute favorite. Being a music major, the addition of the organ just makes me happy, but also the altered rythym for 'whether gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, trangender life' just gives me chills...Every. Damn. Time.
One of the most memorable performances of all time. The years keep going by and I can still perfectly remember how everyone stopped what they were doing to watch this live. It was like breaking news. No one ever knew what to expect from Lady Gaga
To me, this is THE performance of Gaga's career. I cried so hard at this because the gays and Gaga have had a connection since the beginning of her career. A lot of pop stars with primarily gay fan bases don't appreciate their gay fans as well. Gaga took it as a sign from the universe to make a revolutionary change, and she gave us so much loving promotion. Gaga was a big cause to the second huge LGBT revolution. Rupaul's Drag Race/Rupaul as a person becoming successful also helped solidify this change. We are witnessing history people! Gaga and Rupaul are making arts and the gays come to life. This will bring us into the new Romantic period, just like Ancient Greece was! This hopefully brings us to where all human beings on earth have full rights to be who they were meant to be.
I was fortunate enough to see her live. She is incredible. As a fellow fibromyalgia warrior, she has set the bar really high. I also concentrate on what I CAN do, not what I can’t. I love you Stefanie. 😍

When she sang “no matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgender life I’m on the right track baby I was born to survive” I felt that
OMG yes!! Me too! Goose bumps!
when she straight up SAID the words and didn’t beat around the bush like most artists would, the world was too shook to respond. nothing but respect ✊🏻
There’s been times where that line makes me tear up. Especially the part about being born to survive.
omg same here !!

People underestimate Gaga’s singing ability, the woman can sing like crazy.
She can certainly sing the national anthem! She did us proud at the Biden-Harris inauguration
Who are these people who underestimate her singing? I've never met anyone who said she can't sing. If anything, she is very much recognized for her singing abilities.
@@sarac.3568 wow you're lucky! Since I was 4 (when she became famous, 2008) I've heard thousands of times that Gaga can't sing! I still hear it nowadays but it's very rare.

Gaga very underrated as a vocalist, she doesn't get enough credit in singing live, she honestly can out sing most of the artists of her time.
she would be successful in any era too as she can tap into many other genres pop, jazz, opera, etc who knows maybe will get a rock album from her
No shes not
SheMs not underrated at all, her vocals are just less shocking than her outfits, makeup, and stage personas.

I thought this era of music was trash, I didn't understand then. Now, regretted those days were pop music has real substance and deep meaning.
Many songs still have real meaning behind them. You just have to find them.

I was thinking about the same as you did but I don't think pop has any deeper meaning.
This is EPIC. She is already a legend . Gaga changed the industry ... she showed us fashion, eccentricity and madness ... her voice is magnificent and her old songs are commercial but the lyrics are really good . This incredible performance was literally out of this world, these days nobody push boundaries like lady gaga did.
she can sing, dance, act, play piano, write her own song. perfect

She changed my life.
Lady Gaga won an Oscar!!!
yay
It's SICK how brilliant she can sing while dancing just as wild, if not MORE, than her background dancers! AMAZING! She works so hard!
Have you seen 2009 vma performance
All I can say without hurting your feelings is that it is so not important.
