That was depressing . And who looks at those tiny bare cages and thinks to wish any creature back in them . Imagine the lonely hours animals spent in that crap hole , bored senseless. I love an abandoned place but this one just felt sad.
+Joshua Jaajaa It's open to the public. It's part of Griffith Park open from dusk til 10PM. On the weekends lot of people hike all around there. I've done several ghost investigations there. It's considered one of the most haunted places in LA.
Adam, I have been hiking Griffith Park for over 20 years. The peak that you pointed at and saw the fence, just on the other side there is an abandon boys club. It has a pool and a small building, not much there. Its a hike to get to it.
The old L.A. Zoo is considered one of the most haunted locations in all of Los Angeles. I always get three or four pages worth of EVPs when ever I investigate there. Adam on this particular day you seem to have a spirit following you around. He keeps asking "What happened?!" You can hear him at :40 seconds, then again at : 55 seconds and then again at 2:33 and at 3:16 and at 4:37 and at 7:55. Then at 3:37 it sounds like he is saying "It happened!" Someone is saying "Please, come here kid." at 1:09. A creepy girl is asking "Do you want to?" at 1:16. The cage on top of the rocky peek is to keep people from jumping off. At 2:08 I hear "Roger!" Someone is telling you "You can't go down there!" at 2:20. Then the same voice lets you know "I'm here!" at 2:23. It sounds like a kid. Do you hear "Don't hold them back." at 3:31? You say "This is the lion's hotel." and then I hear "Get out of here!" at 3:52. You say maybe they had Sea Otters and in reply I think I hear "Sea turtles" at 5:42. At 7:35-7:36 a child is telling you to "Back away!" It looks like you were walking up on her quickly, not give her her space. I hear "Hello,Goodbye!" at 7:49. And "Over raining" at 7:50. A booming, nasty voice shouts "Get out of here!" at 8:25-8:26. I hear a female say "Rebeca" at 9:30. Everywhere you go in Griffith Park you will bump into ghosts. Especially the main attractions there, like the Observatory and the Merry-go-round. Check out the picnic table if you dare. As always a great video. Thanx for exploring the old L.A. Woo, I mean Zoo.
The sizes of those cages are extremely inhumane. No animal should have to live like that. Very glad zoos have changed or are changing to accommodate to other living creatures that diserve to be tried like the living beings they are.
+IsisStory I think thats why it closed, its crazy to think they held animals in those tiny little cages, at my local zoo the enclosures are huge, its still sad to see them closed away though =[
Yes, I used to like the zoo near me because they "had room to run" but it's still a very unnatural habitat and they can't do the things that come natural to them. Usually they don't live nearly as long as they do in the wild. : (
Normally I love watching the videos with haunted buildings in it, but the fact that this video takes place in Los Angeles, it means it isn't far from my house, it's just so creepy!
6 years later, and I just saw your visit back here. You still had the Disney shades! Man, you had those for so long, I miss them. haha. Happy (late) New Year, Adam!
this was the first video of yours I watched, and iv been hooked eversince. I love The Daily Woo its amazing 2 see how much you have changed in just 4 years keep up the good work Mr Woo your fantastic
Hate zoos because i feel sorry for all the caged animals,no more freedom..It's so sad and has never been a happy place for me to visit when i was younger. yep, save the animals but don't cage them for life..
I know that people hate that they are caged and not free but if some were in the wild still they would most likely be hunted by poachers to extinction and if they were in a zoo and not caged they would attack and kill humans.
The first zoo, called the Griffith Park Zoo, opened in 1912 and was located about two miles (3.2 km) south of the current zoo site until it was closed in August, 1966. Remnants of the original zoo remain. The site of the current zoo was formerly the location of Rodger Young Village, which was itself built on the land which had been used for the Griffith Park Aerodrome.
This place appears in a 1978 episode of the TV cop show "CHiPs," called "Supercycle." There's a whole sequence where Ponch ( Erik Estrada ) chases the episode's antagonist, "The Phantom"---a reckless and elusive Evel Knievel wannabe, whose dangerous stunts in traffic have caused the CHP a lot of headaches---right through there. In fact, there's a scene where the Phantom rides his stunt bike down those big concrete steps to get away.
I love how you're like, the Doctor Who of abandoned places and always have a different female companion with you, haha. Great stuff, I've been on a marathon of these vids for hours!
It is full of coyotes, woodpeckers, red tailed hawks, kestrels, quail, lizards, rattlesnakes, bob cats, mountain lion and many, many more species of rare wild life in the middle of a large urban environment. It is bordered on the north by Burbank, on the east by Glendale and on the south by Hollywood. It has over 4,000 acres, is the largest municipal park in the U.S. and was a ranch at one time. It was also the site of two internment camps during WW2 and was donated to the people of Los Angeles.
Everyone needs to check out the old LA Zoo!! I'd you're an LA resident for sure check it out! Have a pick nick and enjoy the cages :) spending the day with adamthewood was awesome :)
ok so i stumbled upon ur vids yesterday and i seriously have been singing ur opening song ever since ive watched almost all of them now they/you are awesome keep it up and come to jersey and do some :)
I used to spend many weekends in this old area as a kid. It closed when i was about 10 and the new zoo opened. We tried to get in but got caught by security and told to leave.
Do you know how much historic old sites would still be intact for us to visit if it wasn't for our teenage, 20 or 30 year old modern kids destroying all our old historic sites?
Hey Adam! Bet ya didn't know, you were at an old movie location too! Lots of shows shot there, back in the day. One of the weirdest is "Strange New World" a reworking of one of Gene Roddenberry's old pilots for a Post-Star Trek series! It's on amazon. Check it out! The best line from it is: "Badger's got the Shooter!" Always loved that line. Ya GOTTA watch this Adam! Get it off Amazon! It's Old-School Crazy! You'll LOVE it! And Badger is NUTZ! :-)
Yes, kind of sad for those animals then but that is why it was closed in '64 and moved a ways to the north where they had more room to build. We used to have a Busch gardens here. It was in Panorama city where the Budweiser factory is now. (Anheiser Busch.)
That place where you ran into the bees or wasps was used in Police Academy 2. It was used as a gang's hideout. The bear pit in there was used in Anchorman: the legend of Ron Burgandy.
You actually are only allowed to enter the zone if you have two or three different forms of radiation detection, a guide, and if you pass the checks. After you pass through, it's reasonably safe. Stay away from radiation and unstable buildings and you'll be fine. The biggest problem with going would be getting the money to go.
having been in the building industry, i keep getting the feeling i want to do these places up and make them my private home. especially some big joints that have one huge singular building. make it my mega mansion.
I visited this place last year, there's a lot of tagging behind the large caves at the end. As for Three's Company I think that intro was filmed at the LA Zoo down the road, the one that's open.
I always read comments before posting my own to see if anyone says or asks the same thing, and the threes company question is exactly what I was aiming to ask. I think that intro was filmed in 1982 when Don Knotts came along to take the ropers place, so was the new zoo open that far back? I would of certainly believed it was this one being 30 plus years ago now.
"The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens opened on November 28, 1966." - LA Zoo website. And the first air date of Three's Company was in 1977. (Google) So, I'm pretty sure this is NOT the place here. Also, firsthand when I was a kid in the 90s and visited the "new" zoo I remember seeing the flamingos by the entrance and saying "Flamingos! Where's the Three's Company at?!" My mom said they had left already.
So I was at the current LA Zoo last week, and I thought to myself, 1) I wonder if it's hard to find the old Zoo, 2) Could I get in trouble for trespassing, and 3) Which friend(s) is crazy enough to try it?
Unfortunately, there is no creepy story behind the closing. The zoo was moved to a more modern facility without those cages. They needed a lot of room for this upgrade and it was easier and cheaper to build a new facility than to make all the changes to the now abandoned zoo.
This zoo looks horrible I mean the enclosures look too small for what was inside and im assuming that even though its closed they looj too bare I mean I dont know if there was any enrichment of a sorts but still they look bare and theres nowhere for the animal to escape the eyes of the public
I much prefer the new format of zoos and (p)reserves . . . Where animals are given more room. And in some cases, allowed to roam free. Caging them seems so barbaric and inhumane. Great video. Thumbs up. Thanx. Peace et al.
You should've went looking for the cursed picnic table that's suppose to be in that same park. In 1976 a couple were doing the wild thing on the picnic table when a tree fell on them and killed them. They've never been able to remove the tree because apparently it moans and shakes.
Nope. Not at all. I think the table is number 29th in the park. Besides the fact the couple died when the tree fell on them, they were cremated and someone spread their ashes over the tree.
I was just up there today, but the only road leading to it is closed off. Theres official no trespassing signs at the gate. If it was open to the public before, its not now. It take a minute to drive to it, but its a 30 minute walk on foot, and it looks like its not open to the public anymore.
I think you are right... Old zoo closed in '64 with the the new zoo opening in '66? Oh, I saw the A-B brewery comments. I remember the old Bush Gardens at the brewery in Van Nuys @15800 Roscoe Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91406. It was off of I-5. Same?
The small cages might have been how they moved an animal from one exhibit to another. I know of one zoo that rotates some animals ever so often to make their lives a bit more interesting.
Go to a top of the trails, get as many pictures of the angles downward as possible, view the power old poles between trees, these reach above the trees by only inches in some areas, these could be 75 + years and trees have not been cut or trimmed in several dozen years. wow looks just like the Perth zoo when I was a kid -of course now the Perth zoo is beautiful - but when I first saw it like this one it made me very sad :(
I'd have the place full of turkeys, goose, ducks, quail, and chooks, with sheep roaming around if i had my way with the place. i can tell you from experience, its a real ass to have to pull out dilapidated fencing coz you often don't get it all out, and usually need to tow it out coz its all tangled in the grass and the sand has often blown over and buried bits of it. can't do it by hand, need a tractor.
Anjounet Leavell Well, the old los angeles zoo is open to the public and you're allowed to explore them. as for his other videos, i think he's just being sneaky.
It's like a monument to misery. All those prison cells where animals paced back and forth day after day, year after year.
That was depressing . And who looks at those tiny bare cages and thinks to wish any creature back in them . Imagine the lonely hours animals spent in that crap hole , bored senseless. I love an abandoned place but this one just felt sad.
The Zoo is still open to the public and during Halloween it is used for the Haunted Hayride
Its not open to the public from what I saw. Camp Rd is closed off, and the signs say no entry.
+Joshua Jaajaa It's open to the public. It's part of Griffith Park open from dusk til 10PM. On the weekends lot of people hike all around there. I've done several ghost investigations there. It's considered one of the most haunted places in LA.
What makes this place haunted? I'm curious and not being rude just really curious

oh shyt
+Rae Star It's a Bar-B-Q. People will have parties in the park. They'll cook their hamburgers and hotdogs in them.
Calling people names instead of going there yourself with a digital recorder to see for yourself IS retarded.
"I want all the animals back into these cages."
Not a cruel wish at all.^^
The sizes of those cages are extremely inhumane. No animal should have to live like that. Very glad zoos have changed or are changing to accommodate to other living creatures that diserve to be tried like the living beings they are.
I totally agree. This broke my heart to watch..

Dana Joyner I agree.
IsisStory that's how zoo's were back then
From one Adam to another, Awesome channel, man! i've been watching your videos all week.
Normally I love watching the videos with haunted buildings in it, but the fact that this video takes place in Los Angeles, it means it isn't far from my house, it's just so creepy!
Wonderful vid Adam. Can't believe all this still exists since1965. Does LA have a new location for their zoo or doesn't have one at all today?
You are by far my favorite youtuber! :)
6 years later, and I just saw your visit back here. You still had the Disney shades! Man, you had those for so long, I miss them. haha. Happy (late) New Year, Adam!

Awesome job dude, with your gorgeous asst. surprised to notice no graffiti and damn that's in good shape for being closed for almost 5 decades!
Everyone needs to check out the old LA Zoo!! I'd you're an LA resident for sure check it out! Have a pick nick and enjoy the cages :) spending the day with adamthewood was awesome :)
So much of LA's heritage is being abandoned, forgotten, and allowed to rot away. I am surprised that the street bums have not ripped out the copper
I couldn't help myself and thought of this and giggled madly, "Adam the Woo went to the Zoo..." lol
Take Care!
ok so i stumbled upon ur vids yesterday and i seriously have been singing ur opening song ever since ive watched almost all of them now they/you are awesome keep it up and come to jersey and do some :)
I used to spend many weekends in this old area as a kid. It closed when i was about 10 and the new zoo opened. We tried to get in but got caught by security and told to leave.
I like your videos, but old photos posted along with what you see would be amazing!
Pats of the 1987 movie Dragnet was filmed there tooo.I was there in 1990..it still looks exactly the same..Incredible!!
Adam, did you know Anchorman with Will Ferrel shot scenes for the movie at that zoo
Cool stuff, Adam! Stay safe and adventure on!
Do you know how much historic old sites would still be intact for us to visit if it wasn't for our teenage, 20 or 30 year old modern kids destroying all our old historic sites?

you should have done the Three's Company Opening scene version of LA Zoo
Loved the vid adam!!
Wow, still can't believe this place has been abandoned for going on 50 years.
Another great job Adam.
Zoos were modernizing and the small enclosures were considered inhumane. They moved it a couple of miles to the north where it is today.

Is that the zoo from 3s company
yes
RustyX2010 Cool.
Yes!
Whose the new guest? Great videos Adam!
you're suppose to push on the knob for water to come out not turn it -
1:49 "no water" those faucets arent the one that you turn.they are the push ones.
Its near the L.A. Zoo
There's a hole in the fence that u can go through and it will take u there
I just visited here not long ago as well... definitely neat being able to climb into some of the old enclosures and cages! :-)
can the rams play there? I know of a domed stadium that is empty

I've been here twice but many years ago when I lived near La LA.I'll have to ask my hubby why we didn't tour this part of the park?
This zoo looks horrible I mean the enclosures look too small for what was inside and im assuming that even though its closed they looj too bare I mean I dont know if there was any enrichment of a sorts but still they look bare and theres nowhere for the animal to escape the eyes of the public
I find it so weird that any place in LA would be abandonded. As busy as that city is 0_°

It's actually right off the main road through Griffith park, near Wilson and Harding golf courses. A short stroll from the parking lot.
Very cool adam! Def a creepy abandoned zoo
scary zoo+adam the woo=awesomness
You should've went looking for the cursed picnic table that's suppose to be in that same park. In 1976 a couple were doing the wild thing on the picnic table when a tree fell on them and killed them. They've never been able to remove the tree because apparently it moans and shakes.

Nope. Not at all. I think the table is number 29th in the park. Besides the fact the couple died when the tree fell on them, they were cremated and someone spread their ashes over the tree.
A friend of mine had there 21st birthday there. It was a cool place to check out. Except we didn't stay long after it got dark.

its open I went 2 days ago you probably went the wrong way
Yeah my GPS took me to a closed road near the boys camp. I asked one of the park people and I found it.
I actually visited that abandoned place before.
Same?
I love it when u explore abandoned places especially amusement parks
We used to drink and drop acid up there when I was in high school . Memories :)
Yes, that is where they have the "haunted hayride". They do it every year around Halloween.
Adam you should have gone behind the old broken fence theres hidden tunnels and buildings back there
Man, I Love your Videos ♥ Props too. I Could NOT Do this! >.
Dear mr woo, why did this zoo close in 1965?
The small cages might have been how they moved an animal from one exhibit to another. I know of one zoo that rotates some animals ever so often to make their lives a bit more interesting.
cool video adam, you should go to bodie it's an old abandoned mining town in california.
Go to a top of the trails, get as many pictures of the angles downward as possible, view the power old poles between trees, these reach above the trees by only inches in some areas, these could be 75 + years and trees have not been cut or trimmed in several dozen years.
Look real close at the grounds, there are many pipes and sprinklers in the growth, the real copper brass heads exists which can be polished for photo effects.
Many ole brass unions and water turn on and off valves are available to view and photograph.
These old artifacts of the ole era are great for effects if looking for 50's era stuff in your photos.
For lighting we have used reflective foil, it works well for us.
We sprayed allot of water mist from ironing water misting bottles to get the rainbow effects in the air around the people were took pictures of students taking photo classes over the years.
We shot many pictures off of bubbles, the reflections from the bubbles come out great for curved faces, color change and light is bent by the bubbles prism effects.
Were there old restaurants to be found? Or even a giftshop of some sort?
wow looks just like the Perth zoo when I was a kid -of course now the Perth zoo is beautiful - but when I first saw it like this one it made me very sad :(
You broke the dowsing rod, now how will you find water?
"LION CHOMP! CHOMP!" Does anyone get a Tom Green vibe from this guy?
I was thinking the same thing.
Hahaha when you went Lions and tigers and bears I went "Oh my" and laughed when you said it at the same time lol
Yes, one in the same. My grandfather took me there when I was young too entertain me while he got free beer.
Adam, those kinds of sinks you are suppose to press down not twist lol. Great vid though bro!!!
Hey adam, Are you going to be at vidcon this year?
There actually is a lot (too much) of graffiti up there, but the parks department tries to keep on top of it and remove it.
i can only imagine that the zoo in its prime must have still looked aweful. what happened to it by the way?
Awesome video, would love to explore there
"Join me, shall you?" Fuck. I'm STILL laughing. Good work, though.
Pretty cool that everything's still there, minus the animals. It's funny looking down at the city, knowing no one knows this is up here.
Wish you could put historic photos on the site, to make a Then and Now display.
you should explore the Pillsbury A mill in minneapolis. an insane expedition.
brings back memories back in the 70's
still looks in good shape for closing in 1965
It is a part of the largest municipal park in the U.S., Griffith park.
Cool vlog channel on RUclips
There is a face on the wall at 9:05 that is seriously giving me the creeps.
I believe that is the correct time line for the zoos but I'm not 100% sure.
I'm guessing this one was deemed inhumane.
How do you find all these places? They are so cool.
I'd have the place full of turkeys, goose, ducks, quail, and chooks, with sheep roaming around if i had my way with the place. i can tell you from experience, its a real ass to have to pull out dilapidated fencing coz you often don't get it all out, and usually need to tow it out coz its all tangled in the grass and the sand has often blown over and buried bits of it. can't do it by hand, need a tractor.
i didn't know that there was more animal cages in the area. i went there when i was 5th grade
How do you get into these places without being arrested? And how do you find them in the first place?
Anjounet Leavell Well, the old los angeles zoo is open to the public and you're allowed to explore them. as for his other videos, i think he's just being sneaky.
