Big flat light is my fav but they are all great. Can't wait to try them all. Would like to see more on location lighting set ups when you don't have an assistant. :)
Wonderful! Ive been using umbrella s for years and just now getting into softboxes and grids...thank you for all of your help in filling in the gaps of my knowledge.
Sometimes I use a single large softbox right behind the subject instead of a white background, I get an even rim light effect as well as the white background, whilst the subject is light in various manners; beauty dish, v-flaps and reflector, more softboxes...
I will have my FIRST studio portrait shoot this week. I will gleefully try all 5 Miguel's setups!! Thank you, Miguel. Your channel is top-tier: video production is captivating, models are gorgeous, you are charming, the content is superb, even the music is thought-out.
I liked the setup with the 2 softboxes a few feet in front of the model and the umbrella as a hair/separation light with you making the portrait from between the softboxes. Beautiful light Miguel. Your videos are very inspiring! Thank you.
I just bought a 25" beauty dish Glow EZ lock silver, the goal is to use it for Bride beauty shots, and portraits on the go. I will use your technics and see how it goes. Thank you for your videos!
Second comment in the last few minutes! You are special. Much useful info to use while I continue to step out of my comfort zone. Thanks again Miguel!! You made my day!
Miguel, you are amazing and I thank you for sharing such lovely ideas through your videos. Honestly speaking I learn a lot from here which helps me to take my works to next level. Love from India 🇮🇳
Great video, very helpful thank you. I have a photo shoot coming up soon but I am having a model walk and still shoot, where should I place the soft boxes, I'll have two, during the walk through shoot?
Great Job holding the camera #Muscles. lol I like these types of videos. Great deal of info without going overboard. Love that you left skin natural. One of the hardest thing to get through to students is that you won't have to spend so much time on the skin in post if you just light correctly.
#musclegang 😂 I totally agree. I say until I'm blue in the face that my images require very little retouching due to how I light but no one believes me. They want some kind of secret tricks but there are none, just good light!
Thank you for a great video. I am going to try all of these today for a lighting text. I'm intrigued by the last one and love the explanation on the first one as well.
You give all the right advice about photography! Thank you so much Miguel I believe every beginner photographer or even professional could learn from your advice!
Love your videos. Just a quick question about putting the softbox behind you. The catch light covers the pupil of the eye, do you prefer this or do you prefer the catch light to be away from the pupil. Personally, I think the latter works better for Corporate Portrait Photographer but is there any collective thoughts on this?
👍👍👍 Really good information! Light quality from a modifiers volume is so important and you point that out well. Your butterfly lighting is superb and methods are remarkably easy to understand. Perhaps something on feathering off the edge of a modifier to totally eliminate a back-round, and the wrap around effect in relation to the size of a modifier when doing that...
Great video! Please write me below how you use two lights in setup #4, flash and modeling light, what settings in camera I use to do. Thanks in advance :)
Very useful information, love the last setup, I think I'll try it, I have a softbox and a silver umbrella and I am very excited to see how it will turn out.Thank you !
Excellent video Miguel. Thanks for making such content. Got a question. If I'm using a basic speed light like a godox v860ii as a main light what will size of softbox/octabox should I use ? Also which one gives a good result softbox or octabox? Thanks in advance!
Thank you! I believe they have some tutorials on their RUclips channel that can get you started. I also did a webinar that should be there too to help out with basic settings.
Thanks Miguel. This was a good review of different modifier set ups. I notice you have your shutter speed set to 160. For flashes I use I can set SS up to 250 on my A7iii. Is there a reason why you use 160? Is it a Profoto limitation or preference?
Thanks for the feedback. I typically do that in my videos but noticed that having them all together affects the overall watch time of the video, which means RUclips doesn't show the videos to a broader audience. I'll continue testing this to find a better balance.
Hey Miguel, great video as usual. I love using a softbox in place of a reflector to dial in the amount of fill I want. By the way, are you using a Rotolight Anova Pro in the background for ambient light? Do you ever use it as a main light for portraits?
Question from a beginner: There was always a softbox that always had continue lighting on in you demonstration, when you pressed the shutter, the was another light (flash) fired in, does it mean the photo was combined two types of lighting together, 1. continue light and 2 flash light? Thanks a lot.
Good question! The continuous light you're seeing is only lighting us for the video. The camera settings are basically getting rid of all the light in the room so that the flash is the only light that's helping to make the photo. Hope that helps!
Me: That woman is Gorgeous! Her features are the difference between cute girl and model. Me too: I thought the deep umbrella hair light was a little too hot on the model's hair Also Me: That photo was better than everything I shot in 2019
I'm not a pixel peeper, but rather a catch light creeper! Lol! I always try to see what the photographer used for their image. And yes, more times than not, the client could care less about catch lights in their eyes...but it doesn't matter to me! I think it's time for an intervention:)
Did you mention that light you have lighting the roof? i guess that one affects the background? how come you did not get uneven shadows in the background with the one light set up?
There is a light there, but it's a constant video light that doesn't affect the exposure due to the camera settings canceling it out. The shadows were smooth mainly because I framed it where the fall off of the light is just outside of it.
Thanks Miguel, this was very helpful! Thanks for explaining places to stand. Sometimes little things like that get glossed over, so it's super helpful for us newbies. =)
Thank you! Funny you ask about the F stop, I made a full video talking about why I do this. You can watch it here. ruclips.net/video/3lgAtPmTUMc/видео.html
I put a strobe right behind the models - without everything - so the light source was hidden. Hiding the light source wouldn't be possible if I would have used umbrellas or softboxes. That was a great experience. The only problem: I didn't see the strobe in the dark, so moving around and not having the strobe on the picture was a little bit tricky. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2551438064920537&set=
Man!!! Another GREAT tutorial from the MASTER.... Thanks a bunch... Wish I could of gotten to chat with you at #IMAGINGUSA this year. You were so engrossed in a conversation I was scared to interrupt.
Which softbox setup was your favorite? Also, what light modifier do you want to see me cover in the next video of this series? Sound off below!!
Octa with/without grids is very effective. If you haven't covered strip boxes in portrait photography, please take a note
Big flat light is my fav but they are all great. Can't wait to try them all. Would like to see more on location lighting set ups when you don't have an assistant. :)
I’d be interested in a video on the use of soft boxes like this and what type of subjects you would use them on
a Striplight :)
Do a video on dark skin photography and interracial couples photography
Wonderful! Ive been using umbrella s for years and just now getting into softboxes and grids...thank you for all of your help in filling in the gaps of my knowledge.
One of the best softbox videos I have seen.
Sometimes I use a single large softbox right behind the subject instead of a white background, I get an even rim light effect as well as the white background, whilst the subject is light in various manners; beauty dish, v-flaps and reflector, more softboxes...
Great photography job and beautiful models, thanks for all tips, and how to.

Loved this. Surprised at how soft the catch lights were in her eyes.
Thank you!

What a tremendous vid! The last setup rocks!
Another fantastic video Miguel and 9.56 was hilarious.

Very easy to follow. Thank you so much
i always like the idea of two softboxxes together infront of the model
Thank you for the video! Using the double Softboxes standing in between is also amazing adding a reflector underneigh!
One light, 40-45 my favorite.
my fav would be clam shell
It's a classic setup, can't go wrong!
Great tips. I have been binging on your videos.
I think I liked the last look the best. Thanks for posting.
Great video, very helpful thank you. I have a photo shoot coming up soon but I am having a model walk and still shoot, where should I place the soft boxes, I'll have two, during the walk through shoot?
I liked the 2 soft boxes in front with you shooting from between them.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Very Thanks for all the videos over the Years

Great lesson Miguel. Always enjoy your videos keep em coming.

The one wth the hair light. The separation highlights the subject.
Very useful information, love the last setup, I think I'll try it, I have a softbox and a silver umbrella and I am very excited to see how it will turn out.Thank you !
Thank you for Great information, Respect.
Hello Im a new studio photographer trying to learn lighting and such. Do you have a video concerning the lighting in the room?
Excellent video Miguel. Thanks for making such content. Got a question. If I'm using a basic speed light like a godox v860ii as a main light what will size of softbox/octabox should I use ? Also which one gives a good result softbox or octabox? Thanks in advance!
Love it!! Thank you, Miguel!
Beautiful and wonderful video. Can you point me to a video that provides a good starting point in the Capture One adjustments?
Thank you! I believe they have some tutorials on their RUclips channel that can get you started. I also did a webinar that should be there too to help out with basic settings.
Would you do a video on color correction in Capture One?
Thanks Miguel. This was a good review of different modifier set ups. I notice you have your shutter speed set to 160. For flashes I use I can set SS up to 250 on my A7iii. Is there a reason why you use 160? Is it a Profoto limitation or preference?
Hey yo. Nice work Miguel.
Yo! Thank you for watching!! 😁✌️
Love the tips! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😁📸
very good..
Would have been great to post all the images together at the end to make it easy to compare lighting differences.
Thanks for the feedback. I typically do that in my videos but noticed that having them all together affects the overall watch time of the video, which means RUclips doesn't show the videos to a broader audience. I'll continue testing this to find a better balance.
Does it matter if it’s round soft box or do Square soft box work better
the idea of using parabolic for the back lighting was not that bad. Thanks for the video
Thanks!
Hey Miguel, great video as usual. I love using a softbox in place of a reflector to dial in the amount of fill I want. By the way, are you using a Rotolight Anova Pro in the background for ambient light? Do you ever use it as a main light for portraits?
Thank you! And yes, that's the AP2 in the back. I use it on occasion for portrait work. If there's enough interest I'd definitely make a video on it!
Great vid my friend! Are you using fabric as the backdrops?
Thank you! I was using canvas backdrops made by Gravity and a vinyl Backdrop from Savage.
Is the green tinted backdrop the one by Gravity? Thanks for the quality content.
Did you use a light meter for the initial set up?
I rarely use them unless I'm doing a multi light setup with a client. You can do it by eye. 👍
Question from a beginner:
There was always a softbox that always had continue lighting on in you demonstration, when you pressed the shutter, the was another light (flash) fired in, does it mean the photo was combined two types of lighting together, 1. continue light and 2 flash light? Thanks a lot.

happens to be sponsor :)))

i am happy about this post. i love the info. also i love the beat. where you got it?
Thank you! I believe this track was off of Epidemic Sound. They have awesome music there!
I'm not a pixel peeper, but rather a catch light creeper! Lol! I always try to see what the photographer used for their image. And yes, more times than not, the client could care less about catch lights in their eyes...but it doesn't matter to me! I think it's time for an intervention:)

#2 is great! im going to try this one more. thank you.
What is the power setting on your light or lights for you to shoot at the setting you give in this video???
Don't remember the exact setting, but I generally dial in the settings and then power the lights up or down until it looks good.
Hi Miguel, may i see the original non edited results?
Great video. But why so high F stop number?
Better sharpness throughout. Also, you want the light to come from the flash + reflectors only, not ambient.
Thank you! Funny you ask about the F stop, I made a full video talking about why I do this. You can watch it here. ruclips.net/video/3lgAtPmTUMc/видео.html

First comment! Great job again
Congratulations! Haha Thanks for watching!!
4 & 5 🙋♂️ what flash & softbox did u use for outdoor session without assistant?
Sweet! I personally would take a Profoto B10 with the small Rapid Box Octa and call it a day!
Pause at 9:55
6 min 52 sec. Was the 85 gm or 70-200 :) think you ment to say 85 1.4 GM. Just messing with ya. I absolutely love your videos
Thanks for watching and supporting!! 😀✌
Boss, nice video..... Can you do one with the Roto Lights in Flash and Continues???????????
Thank you! I am definitely planning to do some stuff in 2020. Stay tuned!
Wheres the flash coming from?
Man!!! Another GREAT tutorial from the MASTER.... Thanks a bunch... Wish I could of gotten to chat with you at #IMAGINGUSA this year. You were so engrossed in a conversation I was scared to interrupt.
Thank you! Wished you had stopped by and said hi!! You doing WPPI this year?
was the placement @9:57 intentional? lol
Total accident but pretty damn funny 😂😂😂
@@MiguelQuilesJr I had a bit of a giggle at it, comedy gold. Great video by the way
Tnz
Radames
"Often times". Bloody Americans. Just say "often"
We all know light doesn't wrap, its goes out in straight lines, but we understand the idea. Pet peeve.
Well, I was going to say the light does a reach around, but imagine the comments I'd get lol
And it doesn’t “fall off” either.
