I've been a police officer for 25 years and I've never heard of EMDR Therapy. So I thank Officer Shoberg for talking about PTSD and EMDR Therapy. Maybe Police Departments will embrace this. But knowing how Police Chiefs and Departments are, I doubt it!

My son is a Department of Public Safety Trooper for the great state of Texas,, I asked him when he was recently out of the Academy how many tickets did you write today,,, he informed me in a very professional voice,,, “ my job isn’t writing speeding tickets,, it’s protecting the safety of the citizens of Texas”,,,, very profound,,,
29 years as a police officer in Washington DC with the Metropolitan Police Department...til retirement in 2019 at the age of 50. No day is the same and one mistake can get you killed. No mistakes can also get you killed. This isn't playstation where you can restart after getting shot or violently stabbed etc...you have one time to get it right. Training is essential but lacking due to the schedules and lack of manpower on the streets. Yes there are numerous officers that should not be in the occupation but somehow they are there. There are no breaks in the game of law enforcement you go from call to call whether it's a baby dead from abuse to a elderly person that's decomposing in her apartment with no family to contact. There is no pause til your shift is over...mostly the interaction with citizens isn't positive because you are there after they have been a victim or they may be the suspect rarely is it positive..so in most cases your the enemy no matter what the outcome is...imagine having a occupation where you are hated by the majority...?...imagine having to search a homeless individual that has defecated and urinated on himself....yep still have to search as though he hasn't miss a weapon and someone dies..or is severely injured...imagine being a call for service away from death on every call...imagine a individual telling you they're not going to jail...imagine fighting the individual to get them into the transport vehicle slippery and sweaty....as you fight with him along with other officers...imagine every fuck up unjustified shooting by a officer you take the heat for it every time you put the uniform on...imagine doing the shit I described and you have to debate with local politicians just to get a raise....for shit no one wants to do or has what it takes to do with lacking support...imagine having the power to take a life and freedom...the most POWER anyone can have to be able to do it...authorized...imagine running toward the threat of gunplay and others are running away....imagine being insensitive to death...or damn near anything based on experience in a occupation that makes you numb...imagine working with no days off....imagine working from 10pm to 6am...only to have to go to court and you get out 5pm...just to be back to work again at 10pm...that night..imagine having no clue what it's like to do it 29 years straight uninterrupted...to retire...in good health...

If police raided every house in violation of an HOA infraction, I am certain they would find all kinds of shit they could arrest people for. Stop and frisk netted a whole shitload of arrests in NYC. If you turned the nation into a police state of totalitarian dictatorship, I have no doubt you’d keep a bunch of people from doing illegal shit. That’s not a way to live though... and in principle they are all still wrong. With great freedom comes great responsibility.

I don’t personally do much traffic anymore because I’m of the opinion that the job is dead and being proactive isn’t worth it. But disparaging “traffic cops”, under the notion that they just pull people over for petty things to take their money was a stretch & a touch ignorant for me. You said “children are getting raped but then you pull me over for such & such”. My example explained how the minor traffic stop can & do net those types of criminals, thus highlighting their importance. Bad guys drive cars too.

The requirements to get into just about every department where I'm from are minimum Associate's Degree or 2 years active military service and some even had mandatory Bachelor Degree requirements. The background check was done by the detectives and it was the most violating thing I've ever felt. They looked into EVERYTHING. Even called ex girlfriends and interviewed some of them. I also had to take a lie detector test which is terrifying even when you know you have nothing to hide. I was surprised when he said he essentially took a test and got hired with no degrees or military service prior.
Mr. Ritland, I have to disagree with you on running a red light. Someone ran a red light and killed my 23-year-old niece, who had a bright future ahead of her.

I’ve been affected by this, I know people that have lost their lives. I don’t feel my comments are ignorant, rather I feel I that with great freedom comes great responsibility. I feel the same way about drugs, prostitution, abortion you name it. I think you have to let people live how they want to live, and yes if you fuck up by speeding then you pay the man. That’s just how I feel about it, we can agree to disagree.
I will also say that speeding doesn’t inherently make it more dangerous. When you say “you haven’t been affected” you’re both assuming I haven’t, and you’re also using emotions to respond. The autobahn in Germany experiences a significantly lower death rate per billion km’s traveled than highways, urban and rural roads here in the US. So, my stance is it’s not the speed, it’s the incompetency and lack of attention that people are paying.

Mike, you should look up Tanya Glen here in Austin Texas and the peer support groups she has started for EMS, as well as other agencies. She specifically talks about EMDR therapy and written several books about military and first responder PTSD
Mike I retired from the NYPD , ironically Democrat politicians set quotas for tickets and quality of life summonses. In nyc it’s called “ paying the rent” and when you’re assigned to poor neighborhoods it’s the people who can barely put food on the table that get the tickets. Perfect example of quotas ending badly- Eric Garner ended up dead for selling menthol cigarettes.
I believe it is a little unfair to cops to blame them for enforcing laws we deem trivial. Their job is not legislative, and for consistency we should want law enforcement to enforce laws equally. If we have a problem with weed, or drinking age, or speeding tickets the real blame should be pointed at the lawmakers. It is unfair to expect a cop to use discretion to correct the mistakes of our democracy, and then hate them if they dont. I had the pleasure of working with Kyle for a brief time while overlapped at CHPD. He reminded me of my younger self. He was a real shit magnet as a beat cop. K9 was a perfect fit for him. So happy he has persevered.

Mike....I once stopped a car going 15 over. The passenger had a felony warrant for criminal sexual conduct of a minor. Traffic stops matter.
If police raided every house in violation of an HOA infraction, I am certain they would find all kinds of shit they could arrest people for. Stop and frisk netted a whole shitload of arrests in NYC. If you turned the nation into a police state of totalitarian dictatorship, I have no doubt you’d keep a bunch of people from doing illegal shit. That’s not a way to live though... and in principle they are all still wrong. With great freedom comes great responsibility.
@@MikeRitland that’s fine, I don’t disagree on some of the points you made. I don’t personally do much traffic anymore because I’m of the opinion that the job is dead and being proactive isn’t worth it. But disparaging “traffic cops”, under the notion that they just pull people over for petty things to take their money was a stretch & a touch ignorant for me. You said “children are getting raped but then you pull me over for such & such”. My example explained how the minor traffic stop can & do net those types of criminals, thus highlighting their importance. Bad guys drive cars too.
I understand, maybe a happy medium is pull over but if everything checks out and there’s not felony warrants then it’s just have a good day

Great interview it's nice hearing from a honest hardworking officer in these dark times we are in now with all this anti-police rhetoric going on. I support the police more people should grow a spine and back them we need them.
It always boggles my mind hearing stories of ppl who try to run cops over or pull a gun on the cops... it would never even cross my mind to do something like that lol. I always get so paranoid whenever there’s a cop driving behind me, or when I pass one. Let alone taking a gun out and start firing at them 😂🤣ppl are so fucked

Damn !!! What an episode !!! Brought back some past memories of my own with assailants and gunfire. The life of a first responder ! Love your show Mike and a huge Aussie fan.
The requirements to get into just about every department where I'm from are minimum Associate's Degree or 2 years active military service and some even had mandatory Bachelor Degree requirements. The background check was done by the detectives and it was the most violating thing I've ever felt. They looked into EVERYTHING. Even called ex girlfriends and interviewed some of them. I also had to take a lie detector test which is terrifying even when you know you have nothing to hide. I was surprised when he said he essentially took a test and got hired with no degrees or military service prior.
Mr. Ritland, I have to disagree with you on running a red light. Someone ran a red light and killed my 23-year-old niece, who had a bright future ahead of her.

I’ve been affected by this, I know people that have lost their lives. I don’t feel my comments are ignorant, rather I feel I that with great freedom comes great responsibility. I feel the same way about drugs, prostitution, abortion you name it. I think you have to let people live how they want to live, and yes if you fuck up by speeding then you pay the man. That’s just how I feel about it, we can agree to disagree.
I will also say that speeding doesn’t inherently make it more dangerous. When you say “you haven’t been affected” you’re both assuming I haven’t, and you’re also using emotions to respond. The autobahn in Germany experiences a significantly lower death rate per billion km’s traveled than highways, urban and rural roads here in the US. So, my stance is it’s not the speed, it’s the incompetency and lack of attention that people are paying.

Let’s be real here. 80% of drivers are distracted in one way or another in the car. Add in speeding and shit goes bad quick. I don’t drive like an idiot on the roads. No one cares if a dumbass driver kills themselves on the roads. However when it’s someone else that’s where I have a real problem. I have small kids with me in the car when I’m driving around. I hope the police continue doing what they have to keep people safe on the roads. I have 0 worries about getting tickets

Mike, you should look up Tanya Glen here in Austin Texas and the peer support groups she has started for EMS, as well as other agencies. She specifically talks about EMDR therapy and written several books about military and first responder PTSD
Mike I retired from the NYPD , ironically Democrat politicians set quotas for tickets and quality of life summonses. In nyc it’s called “ paying the rent” and when you’re assigned to poor neighborhoods it’s the people who can barely put food on the table that get the tickets. Perfect example of quotas ending badly- Eric Garner ended up dead for selling menthol cigarettes.
I believe it is a little unfair to cops to blame them for enforcing laws we deem trivial. Their job is not legislative, and for consistency we should want law enforcement to enforce laws equally. If we have a problem with weed, or drinking age, or speeding tickets the real blame should be pointed at the lawmakers. It is unfair to expect a cop to use discretion to correct the mistakes of our democracy, and then hate them if they dont.

I had the pleasure of working with Kyle for a brief time while overlapped at CHPD. He reminded me of my younger self. He was a real shit magnet as a beat cop. K9 was a perfect fit for him. So happy he has persevered.
