Hi
My name is Vincent van Hessen and I'm a professional musician.
I play venues such as clubs, festivals, cruise ships but first and foremost,
I predominantly street perform
Street performing gives the artist direct contact with a crowd of people that willfully chooses to listen and watch a spectacle because the opportunity presents itself,
and not because of a pre-planned agreement such as attending a concert on any given occasion.
As a street performer, I have the ability to hold a crowd, sometimes up to 300 people at a time, which is very pleasant and it creates an intimacy that manifests itself in a very subtle and unusual way.
During the course of this unusual career, I have encountered very interesting moments but also some unpleasant ones,
for example: having to deal with drunks, mentally ill people, "tough" adolescents, and every now and then, a 'wannabe', which is a situation in which random people, come up to me, totally expecting that they can just come over and demand they would play or sing a song during one of my street shows because they are such "great" performers themselves.
My advice to these people usually is: "Make your own street show,
if you're so awesome. Now please, let me pursue doing mine, thank you".
On Sunday, June 21st, 2015, a random bearded man approached me,
while I was singing a medley of 'Sexual healing/Ave Maria/Blowing in the wind'. (Marvin Gaye/J.S. Bach/Bob Dylan).
I decided to disregarded him and just kept singing, because I wasn't planning to stop a song because someone so much needs the attention at that particular moment,
while about 50 other people are enjoying the music.
Well, he waited politely, standing there, very close to me, and when I finished the medley
he said: "I have a young star here and she'd like to sing with you!!!"
my thought was:
"oh, another one of these wannabe's..."
I answered: "Look, man! I'm in a middle of a show here,
let's do it later! (hoping he would get lost)",
but he insisted: " No mister, she's awesome, you won't regret it. it's a once in a lifetime chance,
and she'd like to do the 'Ave Maria' with you, as you have performed it a minute ago."
While I thought:" From all songs, the wannabe would like to do the 'Ave Maria?"
This went on for a few minutes till I finally agreed, and said reluctantly: "Bring her over!".
I saw a little girl, sweet looking, a little shy, she said hello politely and I asked, curiously in which key she would like to perform the Ave Maria'. She consulted her father in Dutch for a minute, wondering whether the key was F or G, and her father replied: "Amira, best if you do it in G!"
And that's when it hit me, pretty much like lightning, who I was dealing with...
I had seen Amira Willighagen on the Dutch TV in the talent show 'Hollands got talent', a few years prior to this occasion, and as a classically trained guitarist, who knows a thing or two about classical music, I was very very impressed and taken aback by her talent, to say the least, so my heart thumped, it maybe even stood still for a second, but I knew I will just have to do it now,
a 'do or die' kind of situation,
to perform a song with an ultra-talented singer of 11 years old...
I must add, after having adjusted the mic stand to her hight and then hitting the first few notes on my guitar, hearing Amira sing, I was so taken aback, I had to focus really hard on my guitar playing because I was so awestruck by the power of her voice.
The video was shot by a friend of mine, but unfortunately, his I- Phone had no more memory space, so it cut 20 seconds prior to the last 'Amen' in the 'Ave Maria',
so with the aid of another friend, we edited a different end, because luckily,
there were around 200 people standing around us, watching and listening, in absolute amazement to this spectacle we incidentally created, on the streets of Brussels city centre,
while quite a few of them were filming this 'once in a lifetime' opportunity,
on that windy and chilly Sunday, early in the afternoon,
June 2015 in Brussels Belgium.

I am not into opera at all BUT her voice is beautiful and if I had been there , i would have had to stop and listen to her sing. How old is she ? She looks like a kid BUT HER VOICE SAYS DIFFERENT. I will keep this to listen to very comforting music. love it!
Yep the sound stage can overpower the voice itself, in this performance, the purity of her voice is presented angelically. I love Amira's voice and have been a big fan and following her progress. Her family is sweet as well, no wonder she has this lovely nature.

What I really love about this performance is that there are no sound stage effects. It is Amira, Vincent and his guitar. The purity of such recordings just goes to show that she is real! It is not her voice washed through some kind of enhancers. Pure, unadulterated and raw and AMAZING! !!!BRAVO!!!!

+Whocares Opera on the streets of Brussels? Yes! Many people know nothing of opera music and how are they going to learn anything about it? Listen to the car radio? No opera there. See it on television? No opera there. Where else do you learn about it? How about a young girl with a beautiful voice standing on the street and singing it for everyone to hear! Art is meant to be shared with the common folk, not shut away in private where one must pay expensive prices for tickets. Is she exploited? No. No money paid. She asks to sing, not told to do so by her parents. Protect her voice? Lets review this matter. 1. Dutch law only allows her to make 12 performances per year. 2. She has a very caring singing coach that is making every effort to protect her voice. 3. She only sings because SHE wants to, not because she is told to do so. 4. Her albums are recorded in a way to reduce any possible stress on her voice. 5. She has her own foundation that builds playgrounds for poor children in South Africa. 50% of the money she earns goes straight to this foundation. She is not who you seem to think she is and she is not treated like a circus act by her parents as you are suggesting. Perhaps she should stop what she is doing to make you happy. I do not see the point in stopping a talented young girl from doing what she loves to do.

If I'd have a child with such talent,as parent, I would not agree to sing at this manner,too much in my opinion!
I know ,you said me about a law,but I have the impression that is not so much respected.Too much media interests!
I know another amazing soprano voice,Laura Bretan ,has 13 years old ,but are very,very,very few videos with her...why? Cos her parents are not agree at this age ,(or intrested) to make her a public star,as a diva .
An attachment of stage at this age is not good for her personality development!
Whocares, I couldn't disagree more that singing a prayer in public is "like a sacrilege." We are called by God to pray without ceasing and to spread the Word to others. Who knows, maybe the people who were so struck by Willighagen's singing that they stopped eating were being moved by God the Spirit.

Es una guitarra clásica realmente conectada a un amplificador. Una guitarra española se podría decir. No la guitarra eléctrica.

"There is an opportunity to sing, so I must sing" it's a must for our Angel from heaven. My late father, a composer, always, said "don't be a composer if you are not urged, . If It's not a must for you" here we see singing is a must for Amira!
I have watched this video with the greatest pleasure, for over three years; it documents with great feeling and accuracy the sort of unforgettable magic moment one so rarely gets in life. Completely unrehearsed and as Phillip Crews says, with no artificial enhancement whatever - and both the views of the people walking by (and the others who stopped out of camera), and the ridiculous comments by quite a number of individuals must surely be a subject for study in social dynamics, as well as the musical ignorance of much of the population. Thank you, Vincent, for both the video and your excellent (and very erudite) comments.

Thanks for your comment which feels like a breeze of fresh air among most of all previous BS comments, made by semi intellectuals, whom all know so well what actually took place on that unforgettable afternoon in June 2015 and then all condemn one or more for eternal damnation, for having the audacity NOT to stop and listen to a singer/angel Amira. (They tend not to damn the people who didn't stop listening to me, before or after this happening, after all, who am I really?) I have learnt the hard way to disregard most comments, cause we live in era in which one can make comments online and play the role of a supreme court judge for a few seconds and feel all mighty powerful, never having to look back and consider the repercussion and consequences of their remarks and comments. I am still just a busker and Amira is a successful teenage opera singer who tours the globe to wide acclaim and high regard, performing very big venues and TV studios. The world keeps turning and life flows within you and with out you. Blessings

Vincent Thank you so much for this video! I only discovered Amira a few months ago while very sick, awaiting surgery (done now and recovering well)! I listen to Amira every day and feel like she is my angel of peace that got me through the last terrible months and has now become part of my life! She was in Belgium for performing at castle Meerlaer, Vorst/Laakdal (ItaliaCantoItalia) where she performed on friday and saterday.
Amira never had any sing-lesson, only listen at RUclips and singing those aria-songs.

Because it was a street show our back ground decor was real life itself.
Had you seen Amira in in an opera house you'd never had seen the dozens of people walking back stage, just because there's a decor behind in every opera house's stage.
My mom saw the Beatles live and she honestly remembers not having liked them so much.
Now 55 years later she's proud of having been there.
I once got a message from someone who claimed he was one of the ppl who sat in the terrace in the background of the video.

Well, not exactly in my opinion.. You're right, Amira enjoyed singing in front of a large audience, but also on a little stage... Sometimes she just went into a music store in her little town to buy a new piano and began to sing. Now, she has just started Bachelor music studies at the university of Pretoria.
