    I'm an amateur sculptor and my 10 year old daughter is fascinated by ancient Egyptian culture so I'm using your videos to write something for her on "stone" tablets. Her name is Chloey (Greek orgins) and I want to include her dog, Coco in some way as well. I found the alphabet charts first but I prefer it to be as accurate as possible so thank you for these videos!

    it is really difficult, very different from our modern concept of language, but it is so cool and interesting!

    In Spanish little children increase letter recognition if given a picture of a familiar noun and they identify it with the starting letter. We can also do it with syllables. "A" de "avión", "e" de "elefante", they know what those things are (plane, elephant). But it might only work with direct correlation graph - sound. Next time they encounter that letter they'll know how to pronounce it. In English this is not possible or sensible (Ava, apple, Art.. I've understood children learn to discriminate full words); however, in Spanish it is useful, because it is a language that works adding syllables to create words.
    I am pretty sure that "the stick thrown to birds" was pretty common place so that people would know what it meant, and the same for most symbols. Now I believe there's probably another side to that text. We have the stick next to an actual bird, so maybe apart from literal meaning, there is a figurative meaning to that text, like catching two birds with a stick, for example (I don't know, just guessing)

    I have a small question. Could you not use the Lion ideogram as an "L" for your name? So if I had to try and spell your name. Owl-Lion-fluffy plant-water squiggle-glove-a (like the bird you have).

      The lion for an L sound comes into use pretty late, so I like to stick with the signs they likely would have used for my name for most of ancient Egyptians history.

    awesome video
    i am wondering is it possible that to spell your name as MRND in hieroglyphs? or the vowel at the end must be presented?

    It comes together with practice, but I prefer English. Wouldn't each priest or artist choose different Hieroglyphs depending on his or her thought process? For example when giving travel directions some people emphasize landmarks for example:
    "Go that way till you reach the post office and then go left till you reach the fountain and it's the red door on the right"
    and other people would only describe distances:
    "Go two blocks straight and go left for one block and you'll see the sign on the right."

      That is a good question. In general, a lot of the things written were pretty formulaic and there were preferred ways of writing certain things. However, there definitely was variation between people and at different times and different locations. How much was personal preferences or quirks and how much was a difference in local (or temporal) traditions and habits is hard to say. Sometimes we can see local trends in the evidence, but not always.

    Great video! Thank you! Isn’t the hieroglyph ‘lion’ the representative of letter ‘ L ‘?

    • @adelinebarry4309
      @adelinebarry4309 3 года назад +4

      Well, sorta. The Egyptians didn't use the letter 'L' originally. So there wasnt technically an 'L'. When they needed to begin writing greek and roman names they began using the lion for 'L'. Hope that helps!

    It is very hard to find videos that teach us to read real hieroglyphs, i want to understand from real hieroglyphs, not learn write silly things expressions as "I dropped my phone from my car", "My name is kitkat". There is thousands of videos teaching how to write crazy things. A lot of bla...bla...bla..., but the real thing we cannot see.
