It's a powerful kind of music that shrouds itself in a uniform of cold humility, not unlike the office of maid itself. It so passively receives the emotions the listener approaches it with, somehow compatible equally with joy and grief, peace and fury, and yet your living corpse sits still and quiet at album's end, utterly emotionally drained. Its pandiatonic language of harmony and dissonance is an approach to music as fundamentally primitive as it is fresh and inspiring. Perhaps, to the ears that are tuned to commercial music, it appears to have the character of 90s alt rock without vocals. And indeed, the blood the two genres share is unmistakable. But maidcore is silent as a swan, content in whatever whirlwind of feeling it contains behind its unmoving lips to play background to the life of the listener. Still, the understanding of the idioms of rock and of broader Western music represented by the genre give it a sense of unambiguous definition, as if the song, though silent, knows exactly what it wants to say. The feeling of wanting so badly in deepest conscience to respond to the song, and the feeling of that sensation being trapped, of being rendered equally as silent by and in the music's docile presence, is profound and highly addicting. Perhaps this naked shell of music that strips from rock everything that makes it rock, strips overt communication from every traditionally communicative part of Western music, shall be the foundation upon which the genre of maidcore shall stand and endure into ages to come.
