Thank you Briefy for this tale. Sometimes history retold is about the *big* stories but it is just as huge for the Madame, her daughter and her faithless lover. Her death at the hands of those she loved would have been doubly painful. Her manner of death with the faces of her child and the man she once ardently loved was the double betrayal. She made her peace with God and determined to live a better life. Only for it to be savagely snatched from her. Please keep well and thank you again for all your efforts. Human beings can be deadly, especially where money is concerned. The woman murdered was no saint, but murder by your daughter's hand, via your lover, is horrendous. He got his just due, she was given a second chance.
I wonder if Maria being sent away so early in life caused her to not feel any connection towards her parents. Similar to children who develop child attachment disorder.
This was a very intriguing and yet "horrific," murder case involving a love triangle between mother, daughter and their mutual lover. Even though, Marie didn't receive the love and affection from her mother, I can't condone her assisting in her mother's murder. I'm glad that justice was served for the lover and Marie, period! Great investigating, presentation, historical information and photos, as always.
Sounds like Marie was 1 of those ppl, who are very easily influenced by the ppl around her. Just consider, how easily she came to wish to stay in the convent and become a nun, and just as quickly she adapted to life as a shopkeeper and then a model prisoner. No doubt, without the influence of her mother and the lover, she wouldve lived a happy and unremarkable life. Exactly the kind of person, where every1 would exclaim, that they would NEVER have thought her capable of it, coz without the influence she wouldnt have been. Basically, she was a pilot fish, whose nature and direction was determined by the person or persons, she was imprinted on.
Just as now, girl’s need a healthy relationship with their father. Without that emotional supportive background, girls and young women are more likely to fall for the first charmer that comes into their life. Marie’s Father apparently loved her as he so wished to seee her before he died. But Marie had been sent away at an early age and before then, her Father worked long hours with little time for his offspring. Marie’s Mother thought Marie was in the way and was happy to send the child away. In the convent, Marie was at least attended to and was made to believe that she at least had the love of God. Going back home at age 16 with hormones raging and beauty the only attribute she was aware of, she was easy pickings for any man with even minimal charm. Marie didn’t stand a chance.
Good one, Little Red R.H. I kept looking for the air brushed marks in that photo of the mother! I even checked & saw the air brush had been patented in 1876, a year before this crime took place. I was so shocked & disgusted by this story, I guess I had to try & find some humor.
Good evening, BC. Another interesting historical case, filled with anger, jealousy, and poor planning of a murder. It was actually Marie's estate, left to her by her father. Her mother was basically her trustee until she came of age at the age of 21. Since she had nothing to do with her father's death, she may have been able to keep it.

Maybe she just wanted her mothers lover for herself. She was still lovestruck while his murder trial was going on. The father left everything to his daughter and wanted to see her. She was in a convent praying... maybe just a very confused young girl. Leon easily manipulated her.
Well, also having such a cold mother and not having much of a relationship with her would have left her void of any feelings towards her mother and made it easier to kill her I would say.
Marie still could've visited her dying father and grant his last wish of seeing her. But she choose not too. So dhe can't be angry at her mom for sending her to a convert school.

Doubt she was thinking that. When our beloveds are dying and we "cannot save" them - we still go see them as we know they are dying. It's the normal/cultural thing to do (same culture as back then).
She was selfish from the start. Her mother should have left her there. They never had a relationship. Should have saved some money for her future. Also she should have been smart about her next love interest
This was a strange and twisting case! At first I thought the mother would be the one who would murder the daughter and anyone else who tried to get control of her daughter's inheritance.
I actually chuckled at their ineptitude...but then became disgusted because Marie got off with a relatively light sentence, was released, and allowed to live out her life.
Isn't that repugnant? That's the French courts for you, favoring her and lying that she has extenuating circumstances so they can go easy on her. Marie's extenuating circumstances were that they hate men.
This case left me feeling ambivalent. I don't believe Marie would've murdered her mother if it hadn't been for Leon's involvement, it sounded more as if she got caught up in it, in the moment. On the other hand, she did participate. But... I also wonder how young/old Marie was when she was sent off to live in that far away convent? Either way, considering her father's health wasn't good, and her mother wasn't motherly, I presume they didn't visit often. Then, she was made to move back home when she was 15, quickly became preyed upon by Leon, a man who she at that time didn't know was her mother's lover. And when Marie did find out about that relationship, Leon presumably told her xx lies, alienating her even further away from her mother... However, she did participate in killing her mother. As said, I'm ambivalent. One moment I think she deserved her sentencing, the next moment I think her sentencing was a bit harsh.
If the situation had been reversed, I don't think anyone would have any question as to whether a young man influenced to participate in murder by an attractive woman was guilty or not and deserving of whatever sentence was handed down. They would be upset if he didn't get the book thrown at him.
I wonder what happened to Marie after she was released… did she go back to the convent, and continue with the religious life. The young nosey boy was lucky not to be rumbled and meet a similar fate. I suppose it’s the naivety of youth. Thanks BC. Brilliant research yet again and great images to match.
Oh boy I love your stories more than you know always good to see it post also I enjoy reading the comments... Nice people on here Have a great day all.
Kudos to the "shop boy" whose curiosity and inquisitiveness led to these 2 murderers being apprehended - so often people are told to mind their own business. What did Leon possess that made a beautiful young woman and her mother fall for him like that? Also, mom didn't learn from the first theft, and still left money lying all over. Lust, greed, money, jealousy - perfect storm for murder!
Leon had really bad taste in hats. It's kind of odd to me that a girl who was about to become a nun would be good with killing and dismembering her mother.
Another Great posting.. Thank You.. Those two had the plan but just couldn't execute it fully , and is hard to do when you seem to have busy body/ nosy neighbors too.. If you noticed through the years crimes such as these always seem to get folks caught , money is the root of all evil/bad things in some way or another 😞.. 👍👍✌🍻

@@NelsonStJames we are talking about THIS case. Stop acting like a whining snowflake

I'd love to know how her life continued after she was released.
Thank you, by the way. I enjoy your shows.
I am trying to find out but it was proving difficult
Greetings from Australia my 'friend'. I do enjoy your story telling, your semi mono tone works a treat.
Thanks for listening
Good morning 🌞 Briefcase 💼 and happy 😊 Monday crime crew.
Hello Cadillac
I have heard a lot of stories on this channel. But this one was WILD!! 😳😅
Thanks!
I wonder what happened to Marie after she was released… did she go back to the convent, and continue with the religious life. The young nosey boy was lucky not to be rumbled and meet a similar fate. I suppose it’s the naivety of youth. Thanks BC. Brilliant research yet again and great images to match.
Thanks Lillian
More of this pleeeeease! Love this one!
Thanks Joi

Nice people on here
Have a great day all.
Thanks for listening
Thankyou 🖤🖤
Kudos to the "shop boy" whose curiosity and inquisitiveness led to these 2 murderers being apprehended - so often people are told to mind their own business. What did Leon possess that made a beautiful young woman and her mother fall for him like that? Also, mom didn't learn from the first theft, and still left money lying all over. Lust, greed, money, jealousy - perfect storm for murder!
When did the mother become the mistress of the shop boy?
Another great one. Too bad there was no writings by the daughter about what she felt after everything.
What a great story teller, and I really love your voice ❤❤
Thankyou :)
Love this channel. That’s all.
Thanks
Lovely and gruesome......thanks
Thank you too!
Leon had really bad taste in hats. It's kind of odd to me that a girl who was about to become a nun would be good with killing and dismembering her mother.
Yo just never know about people. 😉
Good Morning from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!
Good mourning from the great state of Mississippi.
Morning!

Another great story!
Thanks for listening
Good morning Brief Case.
