    What has been your favorite Daniel Madison release thus far? It could be magic, or a deck of cards....

      I completely agree. I've always been a fan of hustlers, despite their reception, but when I fanned my Red Hustlers it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. I almost wish they weren't limited or there was a second edition released but I think being so limited I appreciate them more. I'm lucky enough to own 6 of them, one opened.

      The original Rounders. They're still an awesome deck and have a lot of sentimental value to me for a lot of reasons.

    Today is June 23, 2021 and I just discovered this review. I have subscribed here for a number of years and somehow missed this. I have read Erdnase and some of Madison and find your review here to be the best, most thoughtful and informative you have (in my viewing history) produced. Thank you, David.

    Not terribly fussed about the actual product but David's musings on the development of art and the challenge of exceeding your heroes is actually quite powerful, and funny that it's hidden away inside a review of this project. Great to hear, thanks for the inspiration David.

    I am glad that Madison released the 1st 8 minutes on his channel. He explained how its only a section of the book that he uses. I love slight and deals so much that i have abandoned magic to concentrate on this form of art. Great review, and thank you.

    Great review as always. My box set arrived yesterday and I spent the evening watching some of the videos.
    Even my 17 year old son who has no interest in card magic was very intrigued by the box, the book, the cards, the story of Madison and Madison himself. And this - I think - is why the marketing of this project is the way it is.
    To bring Erdnase into the consciousness of a new generation.
    I only started card magic in January of this year, so it's all new to me also and I admit to having watched most of what I can find of Madison online as I enjoy his persona versus that of many magicians offering tutorials.
    In terms of the teaching, I only really worked on the Squeeze Shift as I'd been struggling with the Diagonal Shift, and right away I can see the value on Madison teaching us HIS interpretation and refinemenrd of Erdnase.
    I struggle to learn card handling from text, so for me this huge project is going to be the turning point in how I learn the classic card handling moves.
    10/10 from me in Scotland!

    Hello! I'm a little late to the party, but I am fairly new to magic and was really interested in this Erdnase x Madison. I have read a lot and watched even more over the past couple of months and I connect with Madison's teaching style in his tutorials. So when I came across this bundle while binge shopping the holiday sales, I had to come to your page and check out the review to see if it was worth the $99. Thanks to you, I decided to save some money and just get the book/cards for now. I have a digital version of expert at the card table and, as you stated, it is a tough read. As soon as you mentioned it was a modern version of it, I clicked the buy button. Thanks for all of your hard work in putting these videos together. It means a lot to us newbies trying to figure out where to start. Between yours and Chris Ramsay's book lists, I'd like to think I've come a pretty good way in only a couple of months. So thanks and keep'em coming!

    Madison is a character, and one full of himself. Thank you for the review. I love the design of the cards. But I just hate Madisons character, and besides a gift, i will never spend a single sent on madison products, ever.
    And you're right, we are better than our heros, or atleast, we have the potentional to be. After all we're learning from them. Thanks for the review. I also know this is two years old. Regardless.

    Phenomenal review, as always. The price point made me hesitant to buy but as a serious Erdnase and Madison fan I am reassured by this review in my desire to purchase.
    As as side note, I'm always surprised your sub count isn't higher given the quality of your content. But I like every video and I have noticed some recent stronger growth, and I hope it continues. Your work is so appreciated by me and many others, keep it up :)

      I've tried reading EATCT but I find the text a little too dense for my visual mind. Madison does a great job of keeping things simple and showing - and explaining why his version are better - the card handling.

    This video is actually really helpful because like you said in the video, I was a little confused on what we're getting here.
    I didn't realized the pdf was what was edited by Madison, I legit thought it was a box that had two decks and the book with Madison's scribbles printed in it. And I mean scribbles because the only pictures I saw on the website was where Madison just drew arrows at the illustrations...
    Anyways, really love Madison, and you're right, I've never even held a copy of expert at the card table, so this is an excuse to get my hands on it with some frosting on top.

    Hey David, as someone who's just getting started into this world and is really interested in sleight of hand and Erdnase in particular, do you think this set is for me? or should I look for some other collection?
    Also, what do you think of Madison as a teacher? Is he clear when showing off the moves?
    Thanks!

    • @magicorthodoxy
      @magicorthodoxy  7 лет назад +1

      Madison is "popular" with a young audience. This set is HIGHLY technical and will take hours of practice. I would only recommend this to someone with an advanced level of card manipulation - and more for someone interested in gambling style presentations.

  • @sleightlyhandy889
    @sleightlyhandy889 7 лет назад

    Also, there are a ton of people who could judge Erdnase as gamblers and Magicians. Biggest name out there is probably Jason England. You could also go for Chris Kenner.

    • @sleightlyhandy889
      @sleightlyhandy889 7 лет назад +1

      Granted, they teach casinos about gambling, and probably don't actually gamble.

    A wise philosopher once said, very recently, that one can better the best if one is innovative enough and tries very hard.
    As I watched this philosopher's RUclips video, I was subjected to the psychological ideal that maybe I could best the best? NAH, Not today anyway... as I have no currency to forward for the purchase of said "Erdnase X Madison" collection.
    Might I be a recipient of this fine collection and along with the desired accomplishments of innovations and effort, I would expect that, maybe, I could best the best.
    Speaking of the best, How are you today? Great Video. (as usual)
    Thanks a bunch

      So is it ok to say that
      the differences between (eg) a Tally and a Bike are so minor, they are
      near identical, but one might feel slight differences that they prefer
      in one or the other?

  • @BrandonJPearce
    @BrandonJPearce 7 лет назад +1

    As someone who owns Anthology and ALL of his other stuff, almost all of it has already been taught by him. I think this project is great for someone who does not already own Mechanic and Expert at the Card Table, otherwise I think it's a bit of a let down. That's just my opinion. While I do not understand the controversy, I also do not think it was the best marketing move and the fact (or is it?) that they had threats on DM's life backs that up. Unless it too was a marketing stunt?

    Madison being a gambler has long been disputed (though you did mention "or at least the character he portrays" at first). Big issue and the reason why I'll never purchase anything from Madison again is that he keeps selling things under the extremely false pretence that it comes from a real life gambler. Like that barely anything that is taught on Mechanics can be used at the card table while that's the sole marketing for it.

    Madison is a great Magician, and even a better Marketer. Having said that, his mechanics and teachings are dangerous for the serious card mechanic. I think its irresponsible to put out material that could seriously get you hurt. All of the Madison content should be prefaced by, "for your entertainment only, not to be used in a real card game." If you want to learn the real deal...check out Jason England, Steve Forte, Richard Turner or Darwin Ortiz.

    Nice review. It's really very well produced. Interesting to see, but...
    I've seen some of this and I DON'T like it. If you are a little bit into magic, you'll find out pretty quickly he's changing tiny little bits of existing moves and changing names saying it's his, not crediting properly. At one point he says something like "Vernon and Marlo have something like this"... laughable. I don't want to dig much deeper into this but I've seen him teach some sleights really badly. And I'm not sure what he's teaching. He says these things are not good for cheating at cards, but then he says he used them when he cheated? Was he actually a gambler at all?
    At the beginning of my magical journey, I watched some Ellusionist videos. Then I saw what they do. They try to erase the footsteps in the sand of magic history, not crediting, renaming sleights and tricks... so you can't go back and trace the history, the creators, the background, the different versions... I think even Hugard and Braue did something similar in their Expert Card Technique, so I guess it's not new.
    And yes, not everyone wants to do that research. You may just want to learn a few tricks and that's it. But saying "this move was published by Marlo in 1956" couldn't hurt. Maybe it could hurt THEM, as customers may realize, as I did, they're not reliable .And that could make potential customers not want to buy from them anymore and find better sources.
    And ALSO, it's NOT your fault expecting something it's implied in this product. You put Erndase in the title, you throw in two decks inspired by Erndase, you imitate its look, you add a copy of the book, and a (silly) annotated version... but then there's little to do with it. It's not a misconception, you've been misguided.
    I actually think DM is laughing at the solemnity of the magic community. He's taking THE LEGEND of card magic and he's done a $100 dollar joke. It's stressing the rope to see how far he can go with it. Which is A LOT. For me it's not funny since you're actually cheating on people and taking their money because of their ignorance in the field, but at the end, they're free to spend their money on what they want. I see it as a SCAM.

    "I HAVE THE BEST STRIKE SECOND DEAL" that I am AWARE of on planet earth! I however never state this aloud to others! That...to me is likely to sound false and arrogant to most people! I don't mind if others choose to say it about me...nor does that stroke my Ego at all! I am now 60yrs old and know for a FACT that I have ONE OF THE BEST STRIKE SECONDS on earth simply because it's true! I have been honing my Seconds for over 40yrs! I can deal BRIEFLESS SECONDS! No movement of the top card....period!!! They are in fact INVISIBLE SECONDS! The magicians who were in the room when Walter Irving Scott gave his now famous Demo in NYC were certainly impressed by the Blindfold PUNCH technique! More importantly...it was said that people who looked over his shoulder COULD NOT SEE THE TOP CARD MOVE! It was as if Scott could FEEL the card UNDER the top card! I discovered that myself 20yrs BEFORE ever reading PHANTOM OF THE CARD TABLE! By the time I was in my early 20's I realized I had passed by most everyone on the planet dealing STRIKE SECONDS and began to now only compete with what I believed Walter Irving Scott MAY HAVE dealt like! Within the next few months I shall finally FILM what I am able to do with my Seconds! No BEE DECK DEMO either! Border Deck since day one...invisibility was my goal! Goal Achieved many years ago! Magic was always a hobby only! I was a Professional Casino Dealer in Atlantic City from 1979-1981 and then moved to Las Vegas in 1981 and dealt for the old Mob Bosses there until 1987! I was a Gaming Instructor back in NYC and dealt "CHARITY GAMES" for the "GOODFELLAS" who ran the school and were some of the best MECHANICS that ever lived ! I studied with Robert E Ayoub and Dino Cellini! Books were written about these 2 MASTERS! I hope to tell my story one day and perhaps make an Instructional Video about the true fine points of an almost Perfect Second! I am better today than I was yesterday or 50 years ago because of daily practice! I will make a short 3-5min demo/sizzle video of what I can do and will try to send it to the Top Dozen or so Card Men on this planet that I know may appreciate the Level of Perfection that I have achieved! All of these men are Masters who do many things that I do not do nor have ever tried to do! They are Professional Magicians but very very few have ever actually DEALT REAL GAMES! This in no way is to disrespect these magnificent Card Masters either! I was a Professional Dealer and I KNOW what TRULY flies in a real game! I was honored to actually study briefly with John Scarne/Tony Slydini/Frank Garcia and Jimmy Grippo! They were GIANTS to me and will always be! Forgive this long winded text that very few shall see....BUT....STAY TUNED my fellow Cardmen....have I got a DEMO FOR YOU!!! Much respect to all ! NOW....BACK TO YOUR PRACTICE SESSIONS! I typed this out to relax my hands after 3 hours of joyfull practice! It's my DAILY ZEN!!! Remember...RELAAAAX your hands and CLOOOOSE THAT BRIEF......SHUT IT COMPLETELY! If I can do it...so can you! I will be glad to teach you! The Magical uses are really great once you get the main points of invisibilty down! SHARE THIS WITH ALL SECOND DEALERS that you are aware of! Later this year I will put out a short Strike Second Demo that will shock everyone that sees it! This is NOT BRAGGING! This is a man who wants to share the Beauty of a proper Second before he dies!!! I am totally Average at all the Basic Sleights of card magic but can sit next to ANYONE on this planet when it comes to STRIKE SECONDS and not feel small! LOL!!! The REAL Phantom my friends! BE WELL ALL!!! The Bisbee Card Sharp! (TJK...thats is me!) Don't beat yourself up for Grabbing Air or Dropping Cards! I can safely state that I have dropped more cards than most have ever dealt....and I still actually have led a great life! IE: Somtimes you must PUT THE CARDS DOWN and get Laid occasionaly and eat a Meatball Parm or a good piece of Cheesecake......AND THEN....back to practice because YOU LOVE IT...not because you have to!!! GOT THAT???? Cool...see you soon young Finger Flickers!!!!

    I think the fact that Erdnase never got caught cheating, (as far as we know) or beaten for it, and Madison by his own claim has, is a serious flaw in Madison's claim that he is "better" than Erdnase.

    • @magicorthodoxy
      @magicorthodoxy  7 лет назад +3

      magicorthodoxy Very good point! And not to knock Madison, I'm a very big fan of his and his work! (Love your reviews and channel also by the way! Have learned so much about playing card cuts, finishes, and the whole manufacturing process). And after I wrote that comment I remembered that George Devol, who wrote "40 Years a Gambler on the Mississippi" had his fair share of fights and people trying to kill him over cheating. And "Fast Jack", John Farrell had more than a few fights and times he had to get out of dodge! So honestly, I was wrong to judge anyone's cheating ability based on that.

    FYI no one surpassed Bruce Lee.And I really Wonder if anyone will.In magic,escape artists,etc,there are better ppl today,actually,those fields like martial arts here,are REALLY rare,today you have ppl better than the "legends" of certain fields ,but considering that exact example,no.Theresno one better than Bruce.Sad or no sad,hope or no hope,its just fact.

    • @magicorthodoxy

      Jackie Chan? Donnie Yen? Jet Li? I believe have all surpassed Bruce in so many different ways. Jackie has made more films, been more influential and touched more lives that Bruce ever did. He's also been able to realize Bruce's dream of being an American star in his lifetime.

    What's the point of this?? I already own this book. Who cares about the cards really. I own a few Madison decks. There's are probably just the same as his current stuff. And tutorials of him teaching not Erdnase??... Huh? Rather his own interpretation? So what... I love Madison but I feel this is a money grab.
