There is one part of this song that hit me then and stuck with me - For theirs is a land with a wall around it and mine is a faith in my fellow man. This summed it up for me and has since then been the filter for at all politics. Without sounding naïve, in all transactions, look for the humanity on the other side. I don't understand why people denigrate the song just because they don't like Mr. Bragg's politics. I'm a conservative, and I love him. There's something so raw, heartfelt and true about his music -- very powerful (and a great contrast with the age of autotune).
What people fail to realize is we all want the same thing, just people have different ideas on how to get there. Neither side is 'evil', neither side is 'selfish', we all want a better country. I am currently living under the rise of a fascist authoritarian dictatorship, and only 1/2 of my country sees it. So true. Released in 1985 during Thatcher's slash and burn of British industry, and what's changed 37 years later? Still have a Tory government intent on keeping workers' wages down whilst further enriching the super-wealthy. Only now there's no longer any industry to destroy they're destroying the NHS.

Hil Belloc I saw Bragg Live in Barking back in the summer for the Barking Folk Festival.
So he's got himself a nice house is that selling yourself out, because it's not a council house somewhere in Essex? In the greater scheme of things the fact that his house is worth over a million pounds, is testament to his having sold his home in London which you can bet was nothing like approaching 'Mansion status'. When he first started out as a musician he made a point of selling his albums price marked at £2.99, so that was the most you would expect to pay for one. Just think how big a mansion he could've had by screwing his fans, for every extra penny like most rock stars do to support their extravagant lifestyles. How many millions had Bono made before he so generously gave away an album for free, out of the goodness of his heart whilst sat in his own private castle in Ireland.
Whether listening to this on my stereo or watching here, way back many years ago when I first "discovered" Billy Bragg or now in the present across the years, this song still gives me the freakin' chills just about every time. Wow. Just sooooo fuckin' good. Billy Bragg kicks ass!
