The power of water is so scary as someone who lived through a whirlpool i can tell you the fear you feel when being dragged under water is unfathomable. My advice from my own personal experience, is to let the water take you don't fight it!! let it push you where it's going to push you and when you get the opportunity swim is hard as you can for the shore or low lying tree limbs. Dont fight the water save your strength and keep calm if you keep a level head your chances of survival increase greatly! Also protect your head and keep your feet in front of you. God be with everyone who is affected by this hurricane!

It was awlful and i lost myself for a few years and started doing life test's ia what i called them. Where i would try to swim across flooded rivers or id walk across frozen rivers or frozen lakes in the winter. I fell in many times and had to break through the ice to get out. After i matured i stopped testing myself and i use the knowledge i learned from that to help others. Have saved 5 kids from drowing and all kinds of wildlife as well as cattle and horses. Im never afraid to jump into a crazy situation to save someones life even if that someone is a dog.

A King Tide is higher than normal water levels with Norman waves. A storm surge (which is what this was) or rouge wave are not Kind Tides. Bands of wind causes storm surges.

Here in NC it's been raining on and off all day but the winds are picking up. Regular wind gusts have the trees seriously swaying and dead branches falling. Since we live right next to the walking entrance to a greenway, (a TREE lined walking trail) I find it amazing people are still heading out for walks, under those trees with strong wind gusts. Last year on this trail we a guy killed when a tree limb got him, people never seem to learn.
Be careful, that's exactly the conditions we had Wed here in wesr FL two hours north of where the eye hit...it didn't look bad at all but because of the intermittent gusts we stayed inside. Be safe!

Then I see some dude with his wet suit and board all alone on an empty beach in killer conditions sprinting to the sea like a mad man. These surfers are something else.
For the record the boardwalk is over 100 yards from the beach. These were people just walking. They weren't being irresponsible. The hurricane passed 2 days ago and the weather was perfect today.
The water that was apparently "sucked up" the day before on the West side of Florida was taken up and then deposited when the vortex came around on the East side of the state. Plausable???

I was dragged out by the water once I let the water take me. Was so far out but then slowly the tide brought back in enough that I could get back safely. Definidor don’t fight it and don’t panic
I work on the beach The waves were insane the tide was pushing past 60 Feet of beachfront and going onto the boardwalk the waves look very scary and nobody was allowed to go swimming today
Growing up and spending lots of time on the Oregon coast, mom and dad told us when we were little "never turn your back on the waves" because people had giant old-growth logs roll right over them and squish them into the sand. And they let us play on the beach alone all day unsupervised because we understood. I'm sorry these people never received that very basic education.
My ex husband is from Bandon Oregon right on the coast. First time I saw the Pacific Ocean there and walked towards it his mother told me “don’t EVER look down. It only takes one second for a sweeper wave to come rolling in and swallow you whole.” So scary!!

Woooow! Almost happened to me in Puerto Vallarta once. I walking down stairs to the beach, and I noticed the waves coming high, but no more than a couple feet hugh. Just as I stepped onto the sand, I saw a wave come flying in that was above my 6 foot height!. A couple more steps and I would have been in the ocean. Hope all those folks are ok.
It's been completely sunny here in South Florida since the storm moved away two days ago. So I can see how the waves caught everyone by surprise, since it's close to making land fall all the way up South Carolina.

Although Ian missed the SE part of the state, his large wind field had the ocean off Florida's east coast highly agitated. Swells can travel thousands of miles from the storm that generated them.

What was the date of this event? It does not look related to Hurricane Ian...
Although Ian missed the SE part of the state, his large wind field had the ocean off Florida's east coast highly agitated. Swells can travel thousands of miles from the storm that generated them.
