Now that this little arc is over, I want to discuss a few things about Norm.
"Painfully average". Nothing could describe Norm better as far as characters are in this series are concerned. This is even more apparent when you consider her family. Zenith is a very competent mage back in her prime. Paul is a talented swordsman that few could match. Aishia is a genius in her own way. She picks up on things almost instantly and could adapt very well to all situations. Worst of all is the person Norm hated the most, Rudeus. To the rest of the Mushoku world, Redues might as well be a genius that comes once in a 1000 years. Norn is average. Her grades ranges from slightly below average to slightly above average. She could barely cast magic, and she has not the strength to even hold a sword properly. Again, Norm is painfully average.
When she was with her mom's relatives, she gets endlessly compared to her sister Aishia. Now that she is this new environment, she gets constantly reminded of how great her brother actually is. Her image of Rudy is now being directly challenged by a harsh reality. It's no wonder why Norm gave in to pressure. It's actually impressive that she managed to endure it for as long as she has. In the end, she even managed to even sort out her feelings by herself. All of this and she's barely a teenager. Norm really is impressive. I could only wish I was this emotionally strong when I was her age.
Sorry that this ended up being so long. Norm is probably my favorite written character in this series and I just wanted to share some of those feelings here.

The thing about what you said about putting yourself back into your own shoes to figure out what you responded well to and how to approach your kid. Unfortunately for Rudy, he doesn’t have an answer. Nothing ever worked for him and he doesn’t know what would have worked because he feels like everyone tried everything for him and he ignored it all until the day he died.

I'm nervous but actually quite hyped that we're getting a turning point this early. We didn't get to see full ramifications of TP2 on Rudeus until season 2 since it happened so late in season 1. This time, we're getting decent amount of episodes between the turning point and season final.

For some reason I only now managed to piece together why Rudy is probably such a horny creep early on. At first it kinda just seems like, "Oh yeah, he's meant to be creepy and scummy, so make him a sexual deviant." But him being stripped naked and shamed for his body, a lot of people who suffer sexual abuse can end up being hypersexual. Probably doesn't help he then grew up in a new world in an environment with people very sexually active. Definitely doesn't excuse his actions, but goes a long way to make you understand them, which is perfect for a character like Rudy. Idk why I didn't put that together earlier.

@@nikm3r I enjoy when bad characters (morally bad, not poorly written), have good reasons for their actions that don't justify them, but help you understand how they became the way they are. Rudy only becomes more interesting since his story is about him becoming a better person over the years, he may still slip up, do stupid shit, but who doesn't slip up, recovery is like learning to walk, two steps forward and one step back, until one day you just stop falling every time you walk, even if you do still trip occasionally.

I'm actually really glad they actually showed Marissa (Norn's roommate). I was afraid they'd completely cut her, though they did cut the few bits about her introductions to Rudeus and Norn and such, but whatever. Also, she's considered one of the demon race, rather than beastfolk, but the classifications are iffy sometimes, since supposedly some beast tribes ended up on the demon continent and ended up being considered demons instead.

Also I wanted to add that it's important to note that Marissa is a demon since in Norn's POV, she talks about how her grandmother (Zenith's mom) told her that demons were evil and should be exiled back to the demon continent or killed. Norn says that if she hadn't met Ruijerd, she might have ended up believing that and would've been rude to Marissa. The whole hatred of demons among a lot of the Millis faithful (the demon expulsion faction specifically) isn't really mentioned in the anime, except once in the Eris OVA from last season.

A small thing I want to mention, Turning Points in mushoku tensei are times where something that effects Rudeus' life in a big way occurs. It does not just mean that episode will have some crazy moment like Orsted punching a hole in Rudeus. Sometimes its things like the mass teleportation in season 1, even though event itself is interesting, I think the main takeaway there was how that event effected people's lives, like rudeus having the demon continent arc and sylphie having the princess ariel arc. I see a lot of people having "wrong" expectations from turning points, they are waiting for a big scene rather than the resulting events due to the turning point. I would say turning points are story arcs rather than standalone episodes. Just writing this to manage expectations, not saying Kyle or Christine has this misconception :)

Great reaction and thank you. For the first time well not the first time but I think this episode in some ways surpassed Light Novel and Manga. Not in certain area. Norn's thought process and the things you learn about how she feels. It's deeper and even more complex. But the anime nailed it still. Few lines I wish they had. But a lot of the Rudy's side to it was enhanced greatly. The anime can't do certain aspects as well as the Light Novel but the Light Novel could not do the same things the Anime did. It's the way they are written. The Light Novel only focuses on one point of view character in one moment. The anime blended it. Meaning it was equally as important for Rudy were in the LN some of that is lost or like separated out. It's hard to explain and I think the anime nailed it! One thing that the Light Novel made more clear is that Norn actually indentifies with Rudy more as shes grows older. She actually said to herself in the LN. If I just reunited with my father after all these years and told him everything I went though and he was like a rude and yelling at me for it etc. I might want to punch him too. So shes more aware of what happened in the Light Novel. I mean the anime did not make it as clear that shes more aware of the reasons behind Pauls and Rudy's argument but still on a child level. But the anime exceeded my expectations. In some ways it surpassed the Light Novel. It reminded me just how good the anime is at times. It's always great but it can be top tier too.

22:27 Considering what the next episode is, and my guess is they'll skip a lot of the chapter before the Turning Point chapter, but just in case they don't next episode,
there's a chapter after this where part of it is him spending time with both his sisters. He starts tutoring Norn in the library in the afternoons. Norn also starts asking him stuff about the Demon Continent and his adventure home (mostly about Ruijerd, though). They're probably going to cut this whole subplot to save time in the anime since there hasn't been too much focus on the Sperd figures, but Rudeus wants to put out a book about the Sperd (mostly Ruijerd's story) to help fix the whole bad reputation thing, and Norn offers to help write it since she's also heard the stories from Ruijerd on their trip to Sharia.

We might see some of that in a quick little montage, but yeah there’s a good chance they skim over most of it especially considering it’s not immediately relevant. The ending shows Rudy Sylphie and his sisters happily spending time together so they gotta show at least SOME of that to start the episode.

Thanks a lot for the reaction!! Last time, I didn't comment on the last episode because I thought they were gonna do dirty on Norn, they skipped a lot more than I would like it too, but they surprised me with this episode, it was done pretty good, quite clever.
The anime did a better job than I thought it would with this episode, so this time I will not exactly talk about the changes from the light novel, I will focus in giving the context that the anime couldn't add. It was really good, the anime did it great, but I think it still skipped through Norn's complex too easy. I also find it Ironic how much Paul, Norn and Rudeus are similar, they are family, but Rudeus personality is based a lot on his former self, so the fact that he still is so similar to them, is amazing. Hopefully, you will be able to understand Norn a little more with this.
By the way. keep in mind that Rudeus tried several times to talk to her before she went to university and every 10 days. Sylphie also tried but it didn't work. He tried to communicate but she didn't respond to nothing. Rudeus perspective and opinion was totally and completely, properly explained, specially after seeing your reaction, I think they didn't left anything behind with Rudeus, that's another reason why I will focus on Norn.
1- Aisha was not really nice to Norn and it only got worse when they started to travel together. Aisha is a genius, and because of her grandmother Claire Latreia (Zenith's mom) That was always looking down on Aisha and Lilia for being a concubine and the daughter of a concubine, she held a grudge against Norn, even though Norn was a normal kid and Aisha a hardworking genius, Aisha was always receiving less than Norn. At least from her perspective.
2- Norn was always being tormented by her grandmother for being less talented than Aisha. It didn't matter what she did, she could never satisfy her grandmother because even if she worked hard, she was not as talented as her sister. Norn didn't like Aisha or her mother, so their words grew to be resentment.
3- Whenever Norn failed in one of her classes, her grandmother would always badmouth her parents, Even Zentih, for being adventurers. She started hating her grandmother too, That's why when Roxy appeared and told Paul about Zenith's location, she convinced her father to take her with him.
4- When the time came for the party to go to Begaritt, she gave a hard time to Paul, she didn't want to go live with Rudeus. Ruijerd found her while she was crying, Ruijerd convinced her to go with him and offered to be the bodyguard.
5- During their travel, Aisha took the lead easily while planning their routes, she did an excellent job and never missed an opportunity to mock Norn, and while Aisha proved to be capable, Norn couldn't do the same, and so she felt like no one cared about her opinion, but thanks to Ruijerd who always listened to Norn's feelings, she managed to endure the journey.
6- Norn in the beginning hated Rudeus, she was not afraid of him, she hated him, and hated Aisha just as much as she hated Rudeus. It started to change when Ruijerd started to praise him. She had always heard about how incredible he was, but she ignored it, it only made her feel angrier, the Rudeus she knew and the one everyone always talked, were different.
7- Traveling with Ruijerd made her realize that if he received that much praise from someone as strong as Ruijerd, then he was dangerous, Rudeus was the person that as a kid, got her dad in the ground and started hitting him, he could of have killed her father. (Her perspective, of course. Rudeus delt almost no damage with his fists)
8- When she reencountered with Rudeus, he was drunk and with a different woman than before, he was having the best time of his life while her father tried his best. She wanted to yell, but realized that if he got mad, not even Ruijerd would defend her, he was too happy to meet Rudeus, he was probably going to tell her not to be selfish. (Her perspective, of course)
9- The reason why Norn was so quiet, wasn't because she didn't want to talk, she was afraid. She was convinced that Rudeus would praise Aisha while being strict with her. Aisha was always looking down on Norn because she couldn't accomplish certain things, she always said that she didn't tried hard enough, she wouldn't understand that Norn is incapable of doing some things, even if she tries. Norn can't compare to Aisha.
10- Norn had no one to rely on. She was afraid that if she talked, they could get mad at her, that they would tell her how inferior she was.
11- When Rudeus said that even if she failed, he could buy a spot for her, she got mad, it was despicable to do something like that. Aisha started fighting with her (this is from last episode) and when Rudeus told them to stop, it wasn't as simple as the anime showed it. He was a lot more cold, even Rudeus felt awkward by how harsh his voice sounded. At that moment Norn cried, not because of frustration, she was just that afraid that he was going to hit her.
12- The last 4 years, everything for Norn was being rejected and compared to Aisha, she couldn't scape that spiral of comparison, every time, she was being reminded that she was inferior to her sister, but Aisha was not going to the university, and although she was a little hurt by how fast Rudeus decided to throw her away(Her perspective) she was hopeful that it was going to be a good change.
13- When she started her classes, she was struggling a lot, Millis was one step behind and they had many subjects related to religion, but that was not even a thing in the university. The classes were too hard for her, the teachers didn't taught her the basic, she joined in the middle of the term after all. She was on edge all the time trying to keep up, but her roommate started helping her.
14- She was not being compared and was on her own, she was even receiving help, but by this time, she already had a complex, it's never that easy after all. Aisha was not there to look down on her, so she started looking down on herself.
15- Remember the legends regarding Rudeus and how he was pretty much a mafia boss in school? well, everyone always talks about that often, so she heard how he was the leader of 6 bullies, he did what he wanted. That was perfect, she hated him and was afraid of him, it's convenient that he has such reputation, but soon, those rumours also showed his good reputation, he was kind, he prevented the strong to take advantage of the weak, and he was also a good teacher, if you asked, he would help. Everyone thought so highly of Rudeus that they all told her that she should follow his steps.
16- Norn was already in a spiral were she would reprimand herself, she would look down on herself and hate herself. She realized that Rudeus was different. This time, the person that she hated so much was so much better than her in every single aspect, that she could not even begin to compare to him.
Norn realized that she misunderstood everything, she fucked up again, she did everything wrong again. She failed at everything, but the difference between her and the 34 old Rudeus, was that she understood what she did wrong, and when she was able to see her dad in Rudeus, she understood that Rudeus was afraid of being rejected, he was worried all this time, just like her dad was with her and just like she was with everyone else. The moment she started thinking "No one is on my side" she raised a wall to not let everyone get closer to her, but she already had saw her father and her brother doing the same, she realized that they were all alike and got up from her depression.
The anime used Rudeus to tell us how her inferiority complex was so similar to Rudeus. It's even funny how alike these siblings are. Even after Rudeus reincarnated, you can easily find similarities between Paul, Norn, Rudeus and Aisha, but talking about Aisha would be spoilers.

Funny enough, the opposite is also true, where the girls aren't allowed in the guys' dorms either (actually was confirmed by Cliff during the discussion about buying a house in the dining hall), yet the anime showed Elinalise outside of Rudeus' room (when he suggests that rolling her skirt up a bit would get her more attention), which is likely not where it happened, though it's not really stated where that took place.

Before you delve into "she needs to..." "she has to..."
Keep in mind she's only TEN. She's a ten years old.
She has every right to be ignorant and foolish, it's adults' job to support her.
In fact, I think both of the sisters feel way more mature than their age would suggest.
Hell I know when I was ten I was nowhere near as mature, and I suspect none of us were lol.

I wouldn't really consider an entire arc to be a Turning Point. Sure they have lasting consequences, but it's pretty much in the name where it's a single point that changes the trajectory of the story, especially the first one.

A long one's comjng. Pretty difficult episode for me to digest personally. So many things could be said from the other side of the screen, from so many different perspectives. "Do this!" "Don't say that!" "Go and communicate!" "Don't be so harsh on yourself" "That wasn't the right thing to do" - the list goes on and on. A parent has one way to approach it while a sibling has another. A third party with their understanding of all perspectives might even feel bored seeing some bits being played out longer than others. "Why don't you just say something already and get it over with?" they might say.
But the thing is, once you're in those shoes, it's a completely different whirl of emotions that you deal with, no matter who you are. Nobody is prepared to get a close family member out of their deeply trauma-inflicted reclusive state first try. You're going to make mistakes, maybe sometimes the whole "thinking about what I would have needed from my parents" is a mistaken way to approach the problem too, who knows?
Personally, I believe that if the person cannot save themselves then there's really no saving them. That's why these episodes of Mushoku that portray a very serious problem, especially in Japan, are precious to me. The author isn't trying to make some grand statement using Norn's reclusiveness, but ends up saying something deeply realistic about the human nature while trying not to make it too flashy.
This was originally part or his work probably ten or so years ago, which isn't even when it became a national problem in Japan and rapidly increased throughout the world. All this time, he hasn't run away from writing a gripping story that treats the subject with respect, and I think that's my key taking point here other than how they should've approached the problem or how Rudy snuck into the bedsheets etc etc.
Of course, I came to your channel specifically because I wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter, and I'm glad you're open about what you think is the right thing to do. So thanks for the discussion, ofc I'm a fan and didn't mean anything against you. I just pointed out how difficult it is to avoid spilling your milk when you're put into the same shoes.
