The Religion of the God Emperor | Dune Lore

  • The most dramatic example of the dire consequences of blind faith and unquestioning belief can be found with the rise of the mighty and terrible God Emperor who successfully forced a religion of his own design upon the known universe. In this video I examine the religion of the God Emperor and the vital role it played in saving humanity from its otherwise inevitable destruction. Spoiler warning if you are unfamiliar with Frank Herbert’s Dune saga.

    Its interesting that more and more people are willing to let government leaders make decisions for them and not think for themselves. The very things illustrated in Herbert's saga. He was as much a historian and visionary as an author. Great video.

      That's why the American Expirement is so mind-blowingly advanced. Intended to be just short of anarchy, it allowed a wonderful laboratory for individual, familial, community, county, and state expirementation in EVERY facet of life: religious, belief, speech, self-defense, privacy, law, business, contracts, trials, punishment, technology, and, as Amendment IX illustrates, EVERY RIGHT was intended to be retained by the people unless expressly granted, in a very limited manner, to the Federal or State governments.
      I pray we get back to the Anti-Statist roots of our Republic that made such miraculous progress, development, and prosperity possible. When I hear Nancy Pelosi and other Corruptocrats incorrectly quoting the Bible to make a convenient moral argument to support their own authoritarian policies, I immediately think of Dune. Hell, we have already seen fake emergencies lead to authoritarian over-reactions that deprived individuals of innumerable sacred rights to self-determination. And Covid wad only a precursor to what is coming next. Dune should be required reading in every High School along with 1984 and A Brave New World (amongst others).

      Clearly, Villeneuve is a great fan of both Frank Herbert AND Monty Python, and those nods to Life of Brian were quite deliberate :-)
      The real mastery of the movie was to weave those comic relief moments in in such a subtle way that it didn't subtract from the seriousness of the subject matter - on the contrary, in fact, as satire can be a powerful tool to convey serious topics, and it was used very effectively.

    Awesome! This is the reason I argue with other people that both Paul Muad'Dib and his son Leto II (III) were in fact real unsung heroes, and it was in purpose by them. Yes, Paul was flawed, because he was thrust into the machinations of the Bene Gesserits, so as he rebelled from them, developed his Prescience powers and became Emperor, he saw the extinction of humans be Stagnation.
    Pau'ls role in the "Golden Path" to save human kind was too horrible to take. He would have had to lose his humanity, physically and internally, as such the Pre-born Twins of Paul Muad'Dib, His children Leto II and Ghanima were the best candidates, since they were seen as non human because of their Pre Born status, and it was worrisome that they were susceptible in becoming "Abomination", either could lose their humanity for this most important move.
    Ghanima had accepted though that Leto II was stronger, since he could resist the possession from the Genetic Personas inside them both and avoiding in becoming "Abomination', since Ghanima was susceptible to their parents personas inside her, in particular their mother Chani, with the latter trying to take over her daughter and Paul's Persona scolding her to relinquish their daughter from inside Ghanima and from inside Leto II. So the latter took on the responsibility and with their father's persona, would embark on this horrible but necessary path, with Paul's Persona inside Leto II suffering sadness at the "necessary evil" things that his son had to do for the Golden Path to succeed. So Yes, Paul Muad'Dib and the "horrible" god Emperor Worm, Leto II were real heroes saving human kind from extinction.

    Frank Herbet had such weird ideas, but it's a pretty interesting read.
    One note I think you missed was Leto II also thought all male armies tended toward homosexuality. Frank Herbet to my understanding saw that as negative because he believed that reproduction was so vital to the species that homosexuality was an evolutionary dead end.

    • @tuckernutter
      @tuckernutter Год назад +4

      I wish he was still alive to regret that sentiment, because homosexuality in a species helps it from overpopulation, and in human cases encourages adoption. It's exists for a reason, it's not a defect like p*dophelia

      @specialnewb9821 Год назад +1

      @Tuckernutz well yeah, clearly it's not because it happens in animals and doesn't lead to extinction. But it's still in the books and Leto's thoughts, so bringing it up is relevant to the topic.

    Paul did not become a John the Baptist like figure. He just affected the external style of John in living a spartan life in the desert crying out warnings.
    Johns job was 'making straight the way of the lord'. In other words, preparing people to be ready to meet and serve Jesus.
    Paul's role was in warning the Fremen to reject the royal Arteries household.
    So Paul's style was similar to John the Baptist but his focus was the exact opposite.
    Unless that is, you consider the Atriedies family to be akin to that of King Herod, in which case, John spoke out against them and was killed by them for his troubles.

    As repulsive as I find all of the artists’ representations of the god-king Leto, I find it so difficult to imagine worshipping it. It looks silly, turd-like, or just plain gross. Shai-Jeloud (sp?) inspires worship by its massive size and total invulnerability. Paul Atreides inspires because he is always depicted and cast as an absolutely gorgeous specimen of human-kind, and he has mystical powers. Worshipping some big Jabba the Hut-looking turd monster is very difficult to conceive.

After Dune, I don't understand much as there is too much material to ruminate over. The same with John Tolkien's work, which is my personal favorite. The Silmarilion 's epic and episodic scope I greatly admire, but it too is too much. Game of Thrones? I don't want my mind and heart ruined with vain excessive imaging more than it has to be. I have to draw a line of demarcation with never-ending series that I care nothing about.

    Sadly, after the first novel in Herbert’s DUNE series, most of the subsequent books concerned with “The Golden Path” of “The God/Worm/Emperor” simply LACK the basic element of compelling narrative dramatic tension. No one is ever a true “threat” to the “God/Emperor,” and the books become as sluggish and flaccid as the monotonous “thousand-year-peace/tyranny” of the God/Emperor” itself. The books are *not* AT ALL compelling reading with their pseudo-philosophical “lectures,” and *not AT ALL* adaptable for successful film versions.
