    Dune is a universe with no non-human intelligence.
    That was Frank Herbert's entire premise of the series.

    I can see what you're getting at, and there are some interesting similarities which would be cool if they lined up. However, I think one of the crux here is not Denis, but Ted Chiang, the author of Stories of Your Life and Others which Denis adapted into Arrival. If Ted read Dune and used guild navigators as the basis for Heptapods, then there could be some credence here. But I don't know much about the book or Ted, so you'll have to look into that yourself if you wanna pursue this theory.

    In both films, the central character (Paul and Louise) is caught in a dilemma, in an existential tension. Either he can go in the direction of a destiny which is not positive (death of Dr Banks' daughter or death of millions of people caused by Paul) and which is already determined in advance (destiny which he sees in the visions of his mind), or he dares to resist this destiny and free himself from it, at the risk of subsequently having the deep regret of not being in harmony with the alignment of the stars. In both films, Arrival and Dune, a fragile faith ultimately leads the central character to delve into the gray area of morality where good and evil are not part of the horizon.

      So do you think that similarly is intentional, or just because it’s directed by the same person?

    They see the future, but this ability is embedded in their language, the weapon as they call it - this is what the whole story is about. We know this for sure because Louise got the power as soon as she started to use the language, on Earth, in the normal atmosphere, without taking any drugs. Even if there was spice in the spaceship, Louise was exposed for just a few minutes, and this is not how spice works. The users need a continuous supply. Their spaceships definitely moved without moving, but that's the only connection. But it's an interesting thought, don't be encouraged by the party poopers.

    Interesting thought. The main point going for it that I see is that "learning" the heptapod language retraing her mind to be able to see the future too. That implies that they have a LOT in common with humans. But I think that it is pure coincidence though.

    No. Your theory has no meat on the bones. For starters in Arrival the Aliens, yes they are Aliens, have completely different DNA than us and think (there language structure) in the past, present and future at the same time.
    The navigators in Dune can see the future, but it's still very limited. And they still think like humans, past, present and future are separate.

    • @Swappin.Thoughts

      The prescience implications in Dune are fascinating, too. In Dune Messiah we are educated, that guild navigators, due to their limited form of prescience, can hide from Pauls vision in the same limited way they can see into the future. The implication here is, that only people with prescience can decide the future and have free will, while the others are on rails and follow the influences.
      Yet Paul and Leto II lament, that they cannot escape from a predetermined path, otherwise humans will be destroyed. The implication here is, that the people with prescience have no choice and are on rail, while the ones without future sight can choose freely and in the moment.

  • @NarFlux
    @NarFlux 2 месяца назад +2

    Spice doesn't allow for Navigators (Males) to see into the past. They see the present and the possible futures when ODing on Spice.
    The Benejerserate see the past memories when taking the water of life, pure spice essense.
    A Quesat Saterak back do both, but not see alternate pasts because the path has already been travelled.
    ...perhaps the next stage of developing a supreme being, or Quesat Saterak (however it is spelled) involves travel to the past, and altering past timelines.
    For now, Dune was only focused on shaping the future to ensure humanity endured no matter the adversity or rise of Artificial Intelligence deciding to purge all of humanity for its imperfections.
    The question for Immortality of a species was the Golden Path. The what-ifs to be built on that concept, we have yet to weave a story for.
