Alundra on PSX is a notable omission, absolutely incredible game.
Thought for sure that it would be on this list.
@@xerdopwerko Some tricky puzzles for sure. Game is on PSN so pretty accessible, even if it's not playable on ps4.
I was just going to comment this. Alundra is one of the best Zelda-esque games on PS1, with a darker but compelling story. And those puzzles can get pretty hard.
@@xerdopwerko that was due to working deigns messing with the difficulty of games they brought out. a patch recently came out that makes it more like it was in the Japanese version.
How could I have not remember that one for years! Super hard but absolutely amazing gameplay!
Don't forget Golden Axe Warrior on the Master System, quite literally the closest thing to a Zelda knock-off ever made! But really really good.
This! It's almost funny how similiar it is to the first Zelda but expanded in many ways. One of the best games on the Master System.
I really thought it would be mentioned. A good game but just a shadow of what makes Zelda great.
I was gonna comment on this myself. Also, goddamit Larry, what gaming channels do you NOT watch? I sees ya everywhere!
The funniest part about GAW is that theres a screen near where you start that is identical to the screen where the hidden staircase to lvl 8 is.
I remember when I first played it and saw that screen, i said to myself "I bet the entrance to lvl 8 is located here lol." I chop the tree down and there actually is a staircase, I lost it, of course it's only a shop not a dungeon entrance, but still.
Sup LB
Goof Troop can be completed in a Disney afternoon.
Hahahaha, nice word play there man.
Beat me to it...
Oh geez 😂
I did with my sister on my hacked snes classic... pretty sweet game
Bah tum tsss
Golden Axe Warrior is very much a Zelda Clone on the Master System.
That's ridiculous. Golden Axe Warrior has experience points, and is therefore not similar to LttP in any way.
@@TheyCallMeBruce13 It has been a long time since I've played it the last time and the only impression I have left is, that it is a Zelda Clone. Apparently I totally forgot about the experience points ...my bad.
I guess Golden Axe Warrior is more close to the original Zelda than A Link to the past
@@MrOverking Sorry if it didn't come across - I was being sarcastic. Golden Axe Warrior is one of the most blatant Zelda clones ever, but Drunk has drawn lines between action-adventure games that overtly use stats and action-adventure games that use items and upgrades to do the same thing, and so insists that they belong in fundamentally different categories.
@@TheyCallMeBruce13 Golden Axe Warrior doesn't have stats though? Was that the joke?
It was a huge omission from Drunk. Totally worth being on this list.
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is another good Link to the Past like game.
Yup. I can't believe he missed that one. It's a Zelda homage.
Oh man, LOVED Blossom Tales!
@@mullenio4200 7777666
Not hating on your comment but I honestly was disappointed with blossom tales. I found the dungeons to be quite the let down. Maybe I needa give it another go
@@thillsification yeah, the first hour kinda bored me. Does it get any better?
Landstalker on the Genesis was a good one.
And Alundra, it's spiritual sequel
absolutely love Landstalker so many great memories.
If I recall his Landstalker review correctly, he doesn't consider them similar enough for this list
@@SonofSethoitae
Landstalker is more similar than Goof Troop despite being isometric.
@@kekeke8988 The best comparison point for Landstalker that I can think of is Solstice on the SNES
Great list! Always happy to see Marvelous get mentioned and my personal favorite 'LttP' style game is Alundra on the PS1. That game is amazing and I highly recommend it! 😄
Agreed, forgot about alundra
Came down to the comments just to mention Alundra, glad someone beat me to it.
@@ZMaine same =)
Omg it's my third favorite Mario Maker streamer I love u Dave
I was hoping to see Brave Fencer Musashi listed, but maybe it was considered an action rpg and then not included.
3D Dot Game Heroes: PS3 would definitely be a gem to pick up. Good homage to classic zelda.
Also lets you choose if you want it longer or thicker
This seems like such a small detail to comment on, but I really appreciate on compilation videos when you leave the title of each game on the screen during gameplay. I hate watching a compilation, deciding I’m interested in something, then rewinding to remember the name of it.
Indeed! That was a nice and useful detail.
Indeed! That was a nice and useful detail.
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole is a genesis game that has a zelda vibe to it its not top down its actually isometric but its pretty fun and rather challenging
It's one of my top favorite games ever.
I'm always finding great new games through you! Thanks so much for a great list!
I enjoyed Willow on NES back in the day
Thiis is better than first Zedla.
Good choice.
Yes! That flame sword was dope! And that full-screen lightning spell!
I scrolled to see if someone had made this comment. Yes. Willow is great. A grindfest. But great.
Hyper light Drifter is such a good game, glad you mentioned it.
i love it, but it's absolutely brutal. All the 2D and 2.5D zelda games are so easy. Hyper Light Drifter is like finally there's a hard mode for zelda
There is also a randomizer for link to the past and you can ramp up the difficulty there quite a bit
A few more hidden gems that I think would qualify:
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King
Hob
Anodyne
Oceanhorn: Monster of the Uncharted Sea
Lenna's Inception
Reverie
I played a little of Oceanhorn's demo and it looked very good. I thought it would be on this video.
Blossom Tale and Oceanhorn were a blast and gave me 100% Zelda vibes
Crosscode is pretty good
@@assenine619 it's great, but I wouldn't call it a Zelda-like
@@assenine619 Crosscode is awesome!
These videos are fantastic! Thank you! I hope you keep up with this new line of videos!
Gotta hand it to you man, your videos always point out or highlight SNES games I have never heard of. Great job!
I hope you're doing well and staying healthy and safe! Thanks again for the amazing content Snes Drunk!
I just wanna say. You are VERY knowledgeable about retro video games, and modern video games altogether. Very impressed. LTTP, if you made me choose, was probably my favorite video game of all time. That's saying alot, because i've been gaming since I was 5 or 6, and i'm 35 now. I've played most of the games on this list, and they are mostly good in my opinion. Great list! Great content! You're amazing and deserve ALOT more recognition. Zero clickbait on this channel as well! Keep up the amazing content man. Good luck!
Every time you post a video my heart lights up. Your SNES review videos are the best!
I love your content. Thank you for bringing awesomeness to the interverse!
Hyper Light Drifter is one of the best games I've played in the recent years as well. Plus the story is insane
landstalker (genesis), dark savior (saturn), alundra (ps1), lenna's inception and children of morta (steam)
I love your videos like this! I always learn about a handful of new games to check out!
Thanks for the compilation videos like this!
Man I love your videos! 🖤🖤
Golden Axe Warriors on the Master System is another pretty good Zelda clone by Sega
I was surprised he didn't mention GAW.
@@technozombie789 That's because it's a zelda 1 clone explicitly. Even so, it needs some love too. In some ways it's even better than Zelda 1.
@@Jigglysaint It's got a few original ideas, like the axe and climbing rope.
Thanks (once again) for these great recommendations !
Absolutely AWESOME video! So MANY good recommendations here!
You should add StarTropics, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, and The Mysterious Murasame. They did used the Zelda like vibe and they're part of Nintendo as well.
Murasame is nothing like Zelda other than being top down. Doesn't even have puzzles, and has stage based gameplay with no real overworld. It's also way faster and much more difficult than Zelda.
I agree. I was coming in here to make sure some one else mentioned Star Tropics
I was going to mention the Mysterious Murasame Castle too, but it resembles the first Zelda more than the third (ALttP). Though you have to find the castle or the boss in each stage to move onto the next (and it lacks puzzles), it does have many hidden power-ups and traps focused on its quick action exploration - which again feels more like the more hectic dungeon-dives of the first Zelda than the less hectic, more puzzle-rich ALttP.
huge fan as I am of StarTropics (seriously, my favorite game since 1991), I wonder if it would really count as a Zelda-like
while the action stage gameplay is similar, the overworld is slow-paced DQ-style exploration and often very linear even if it is huge
Quite a nice compilation there! My favorite "Zelda-like" game is The Guardian Legend, for NES. It's a fusion game, with sections that play like vertically scrolling shooters (think 1942) and other sections that play like a top-down Zelda game. I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a bit on the harder side, but it's a very nice game!
I love videos like this! Keep 'em coming!
Great video! Some solid picks there!
Especially Crystalis! So good!
Crystalis. Rented it enough times that I could have bought it. Someone always deleted my save. Bastards. Top 5 NES for me.
I remember renting ocarina of time and some kid put a note in it asking to plz not delete their save file. I didn't because he had gotten pretty far plus there was one save slot free so I used that one. I hope he got to beat it tho
Crystalis: Fantastic game! That, and Faxanadu, are underrated gems of the NES.
I just started playing Crytalis on the Nintendo Switch online NES channel. It's really good so far!
I seem to recall it being an annoyance to swap weapons in the midst of combat in order to combat enemy weaknesses, so that bumps it to probably top 21-30 for me.
Except I’m not able to play Faxsnadu without breaking out some Olivia Newton John.
“Equinox” on SNES is another good Zelda-esque game. It has a somewhat tricky isometric perspective that can be tough to control, but once you get used to it you’ll find a pretty decent game.
Scruff Zilla so true. And that soundtrack. Aww gee it's so good, almost as amazing that the soundtrack for the first game in the series Solstice. Also for a fun fact you probably knew is that Equinox is made by the Pickford Bros who also made Plok! Which makes so much sense to me, both games look very similiar and have such a weird, unique style to them that I just love. And both have _' amazing soundtrack by Follin ^^
Agree
Lovely harmony on your intro to this one. Great selections.
Thank you for making and i hope you have a great rest of your day
I guess "Terranigma" falls under the "Action RPG" genre then, right?
Also: Huge props to keeping your vidoe so straightforward. "Hi, here's what I want to tell you, have a nice day". No Patreon-Plugs, no "Like subscribe hit the bell Icon" and no Raid Shadow Legends.
This was a great video!
You should eventually do a follow up video. There are so many Zelda-esque games out there.
Great video, it bought back a few good memories for me. Thank's I really appreciate it because I thought I was the only person who still played and enjoyed these older style game's. I've been playing for over 45 year's now and my collection of game titles have grown with the year's. There was a few of the game's that you talked about that I have but there were more of them that I had never heard of before and now I'll definitely be looking into finding them as well. I'm glad I found your channel and yes I did subscribe. I hope you will continue to do more of theses kinds of videos because it helps me know about great hidden gems that I have missed out on over the year's. So please keep up the AWESOME work and I'll keep coming back for more and sharing your video's with as many people as I possibly can. ✊😁👍
thanks for the video upload, i enjoy your content
As soon as I saw title, I thought “spike McFang has got to be in there”. SnesD, you don’t disappoint
"you can only talk to animals and flowers." Huh , thought I was the only one.
Thanks for this! I really could have used this video last year when I went looking for classic games with the same Link Past aesthetic. Stumbled onto Marvelous Treasure Island and, though I haven't finished it yet, I really enjoy and recommend it!
I did not grow up with an SNES, but my toddler and I have enjoyed trying out all kinds of "new" games, particularly Goof Troop, after watching your videos! Thanks!
This is a great list of top-down adventure games similar in style to Zelda. I'll point out that if you like Beyond Oasis, it has a sequel on the Saturn, Legend of Oasis that has the same style gameplay.
I love legend of oasis
Total length of video: 659 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 4.5 secs.
.68% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk."
Wait...Do you not make videos? I've seen you post on dozens of videos over the last several years and I always assumed you were a RUclipsr.
#worthit
Really great outro and I'm happy to say I'm revisiting the Genesis library at work on breaks. Just started Centy and re-tackling (couple hours in past- hella excited) Beyond Oasis next.. Thank you laptop and DS4Windows! 😎
8:51 God Of Thunder, sweet memories to that one. Still got the official floppy disk of that game somewhere. Further thank you for another great episode!
Can I lso reccomend "Kingsley's Adventure" on the PS1 as well? Sony and Psygnosis' attempt to make Ocarina of Time on the PlayStation, just no one bought it for some reason :S
Never even heard of that one, thanks
Tank controls though
@@SNESdrunk No worries, it's not cheap now as it's starting to be one of those "hidden gem" type games, but it's well worth emulating.
Herc's Adventures for Saturn and Playstation would be another one from that era that's worth a look. Kinda like Zombies Ate My Neighbors mixed with Beyond Oasis, and it has co-op.
Ps1? Alundra. Fuck the second one, its like a terrible verison of brave fencer musashi. Brave fencer itself would probably qualify for this list. Do you talking heads even game.
Since I love indie games, let me put here some more modern ones with a Zelda vibe.
Anodyne, Ittle Dew, Blosson Tales, Ocean Horn, 3D Dot Game Hero, Figment, Reventure, Super Win the Game, Minit, Swords of Ditto, Dandy & Randy,
Indie,
How the Hell did he forget 3D Dot Game Heroes?
@@smokeldogg Maybe he has not played much PS3.
(But its not indie, it's a FromSoftware game. I needed to add anyway. XD)
Minit is so good
3D Dot Game Hero is amazing and easily one of the most underrated ps3 games.
Very nice intro and I hope you have a great rest of your day 👍🏼
I’d love it if you kept making videos like this you’ve opened my eyes with your last video on the Metroid stuff now I’m bout to go check these out
On the Mega Drive/Genesis I have to say Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor is a must play for Zelda fans.
I agree!!
Good idea Brian
Link's Awakening is my fave Zelda game too, glad to hear I'm not alone. And love the video, thanks
Yes please! Thank You for making these videos!
Crystalis was my favorite random find in NES history.
Wow, this was great even by your usual excellent standards. Chrono Trigger next though for sure. JRPGs are still my favorite genre because that game is just that epic.
Quweh,
Xenogears will knock ya on your ass.
@@smokeldogg I've tried before but didn't finish. Might try again maybe emulated this time so I'll be less limited by save points. RPGs are harder to find time for as an adult but it's still the best genre. How many hours would you say?
That harmonizing intro. You crack me up sometimes.
Interesting list, and full of games I had never heard of. Going to have to see if I can get my hands on a few of them
Me: Hey this game seems good
Snesdrunk: It’s really, REALLY hard
Me: Dammit
I spent half of 2015 working on a Zelda-like game in a weird scifi future world where you have a sword and a dash and you can aim guns. Then Hyper Light Drifter came out and I was like "Oh...they made my game....way better than I could ever make it. Awesome..."
And I was too sad to play it for like a year. But then I finally did, and it was really, really good.
Fantastic video! A Link to the past is my all time favourite game. I’d love to try out other similar games 🙂
Nice video. One of my favorites, Alundra, fits the bill very well for this.
I would also recommend sega genesis game - Landstalker. I know its perspective and sometimes horribly unfair platforming can be a pain in the ass. However I really liked the game’s sense of humor, dungeon design and beautiful graphics. Its really difficult game so nowadays I advise to just use savestates before platforming sections.
StaySkeptic You are probably right when it comes to performing diagonal jumps but Landstalker had a little bit different problem. For me the biggest issue in Landstalker were moving platforms. There were moments where I had no idea if the platform is above me, left or right or in front of me. The only solution was trial and error and error meant falling to the bottom of the dungeon what resulted in lost lifes and time to get back up.
Man I wanted to love threads of fate, but the platforming is so infuriating
I really appreciate that you don't refer to any zelda games other than Zelda 2 as an RPG like some other youtubers do.
Amen
This was a really nice list of recommendations, I'm going to try out crusader of centy this evening :)
Some more modern Swith games similar to Zelda are Blossom Tales, Anodyne and Ocean Horn. The Magic of Scheherazade for the original NES is also similar to Zelda. I haven't had the chance to play Alundra for PS1, but I've heard it's similar to Zelda. Also for more great Zelda games that people don't really talk about much I recommend The Minish Cap, Oracle of Time and Oracle of Seasons.
His intro is actually ASMR. :P
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Oceanhorn. It’s a Zelda clone that takes a bit of inspiration from Windwaker and it’s pretty competent. It’s also got Nobuo Uematsu composing something tracks!
I missed the Super Metroid video. Thanks for letting me know about it with this video.
Good video. Good game suggestions.
My first thought "" He better have bloody added Crusader of Centy!"
Oh he did:? ok move along....... :P
But he didn't mention 3D Dot Game Heroes.
Soleil is such a poor man's Zelda.
" I will ignore action rpgs"
and thus why there is not a single ys game on this list.
And that's very okay! Ys has always filled a slightly different niche anyway
I was waiting for Ys, oh well. :(
@( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 乇乂ㄒ尺卂 ㄒ卄丨匚匚 Its Ys-ey to see you don't know how to pronounce it :)
@Dustin Peacock ys 6 orgins and the remake of 3 would fit just fine with zelda fans.
@Dustin Peacock Only Ys1 and 2 have bump mechanics. The modern remakes/games do not.
Thanks man, going to try out Link's awakening for GB or switch if i can. Great work as always.
As someone who considers A Link To The Past to be my favourite game of all time, this video is 'gold'. Thank you, great stuff! : )
"From the same developer of Seventh Saga."
Me: _looks sideways menacingly_
Hey now, 7th Saga was a very cool RPG, once you give it a proper chance and take the time to learn the game. If you wanna see a full playthrough with grinding done off-camera, check out the one on my channel. I show stats and times between sessions so you can get an idea of how long the entire thing took. (Or, well, *almost* full playthrough, I really need to finish it sometime)
They need to make a Charles Bronson game
@@JoeyJoeJoe87 Third is a personal favorite. The music is groovy.
There is a Death Wish 3 video game for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and MSX.
They do look awesome! Thank you! 😃😁
I would love to see more of these types of videos.
"It's free on Archive.org"
Well, for now if jerks like Chuck Wendig get his way
The author released the full version for free some time ago. I'm not sure why SNESdrunk mentioned archive.org instead of the author's website for the game.
If you want another one that’s free try downloading stranger things on ios or android, it’s actually pretty fun.
Ah yes, Chuck Wendig; that author of shitty Star Wars novels who thinks he's better than Tolkein.
@@seanmyster6 😆
Is Chuck Wendig anti Internet Archive or something?
I haven't came this early since my 1st date
You're a rich man baby
It's good to be on time if you're meeting someone, even better if you come early.
Great list!
The fact that you mentioned Brain Lord made my day. I have it on SNES and also A link to the past! I feel like almost nobody knows that game and it is a gem! One of the best games ever right up there with A link to the past.
I tip my hat off to you!
Your forgot the best Zelda clone of all time, that beats A link to the past in every aspect: Alundra for original Playstation.
Even better than a Zelda game cause it's had a mature plot
Second that, great game.
I LOVE that game. Cleared it twice
I really did not like Alundra all that much. Sorry
@@SNESdrunk Ok. Give it a second chance one of this day :)
You're not alone my friend! I LOVE Crystalis too 😁
Duuuuude God of Thunder was my jam when I was a kid.
Awesome video as always!
Thanks a lot man I really like link to the past! Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
HLD popped into my head right before you showed it. Good to see it on this list! :)
wow so well put together. I only knew a few games.
Glad you mentioned Hyper Light Drifter, its an awesome game and first one I thought of when you said modern games like link to the past.
More videos similar to this! So many games use formulas that certain games are responsible for starting. Zelda was the top-down adventure-puzzler that really kicked off the way so many games in its style play.
You gain my utmost respect when mentioned Crystalis, amazing game
Crystalis was so much fun. I loved it!
I damn like these kind of video series 😃like always good job alex🙂
Awesome recently picked up a 3ds and the first game I bought yesterday was orcarina of time..I noticed a few small changes from the original and the graphics are way better I'm stoked to watch this video
Goof Troop is now a favorite of mine, was extremely fun. I loved Spike McFang too.
Awesome video, I'm gonna have to check some of these out!
You should do a list of FF3/6 -like games
That opening SNnnnnn harmony was 👌❤️
I love brain lord! Found that through you a year or 2 ago. Great game!
