You are obviously commenting without having tried this. Well, I did try this and it worked awesome. 20 degrees outside, lite inside car with window slightly cracked so I don't "burn up all the oxygen", which by the way would not happen unless you have sealed your vehicle, air will get in, CO is an issue hence the cracked window. I let it burn for 20 minutes on my passenger seat. The bottom of the can never got hot, I could pick it up bare handed. The temp in the car was now 62, this works great!
I went out today and bought everything I needed, between Lowes and Rite Aid, total was about $8. I went home, had a MAJOR SERIOUS problem getting the roll of toilet paper in the quart size can, almost stabbed myself trying to work it in, ended up unraveling aLOT of toilet paper, but did get it in. Filled it with 1 1/2 bottles of 70% alcohol, and lit the can setup in my sink in the kitchen. OMG ! It performed FAMOUSLY. This gets VERY warm. I'm keepin' this. LOTS of heat rising. Nice Job!
@tacticalintelligence Thanks man for taking your time to share this idea! All the negative comments are embarrassing! This man took the time to show you how to improvise in a bad situation and yes there are inherent dangers with this,so you should use common sense and be safe. You nay sayers shouldn't worry because you're the same type that believes that your government will come and rescue you! So while you wait and freeze to death the rest of us will improvise and do for ourselves just like w
I've always put a layer of sand in the bottom and around the sides to act as a buffer. The inside can gets hot, transfers the heat to the sand, and you still stay warm. Also with the inside can lifted, you. an use the inside can lid to snuff out the flames. These came mighty handy back when I drove cross country and got stuck in a blizzard somewhere.
I've used this method many times in extremely cold weather while having to sit in my car taking care of property for 12 hour shifts ( I used to work as a security guard). I set a small piece of plywood and made sure it was level on the passenger seat. I set the can on the flat surface and light it up. Perfect. It worked extremely well. It also works when having to prepare a meal. I would set a frying pan or soup can over it and did the job. I was inside a warm car and i had hot meals and it would be 10-20 degrees outside.
this info is GREAT!! and it may not be that useful to people up north.. but for the people from down south who never had snow on the ground at home, ever.. this info is priceless.. I am really glad to have learned how to make a car stove. YOU ROCK!!! Please Keep Sharing!! God Love and God Bless You and Yours!
@imsneeky many people carry alcohol gel in bottles to clean their hands (hand sanitizer) the stuff burns great and doesn't spill like liquid. Get some big bottles at the dollar store and store them in a metal can with something to use as a wick. They also have a practical use (hand cleaning) and aren't just taking up space.
Great idea, thanks for the information, I am going to try this. I have about an hours drive home on very rural roads and no cell phone signal, always wondered what would happen if my engine conked out on a -10 degree night., now I don't have to find out. I think even with a window cracked this would provide enough heat to keep you from freezing to death. Always carry extra clothing and blankets with me in the winter time. Too bad a video like this brings out the trolls and morons.
Wicked cool! Chris, if you think your car is air tight, drive it into a lake and see how long you float, LOL. Clearly, you have never been cold. I remember my dog shivering so badly his shaking woke me up, he was curled up against my sleeping bag. I had to drag him inside the bag to keep us both from freezing to death. Wish I'd had this heater that night.
I just tryed this in a gel fireplace.would cost $7.00 for there gel.Now its like $1.00 per can. It works perfect ty for sharing this.Heats up perfect.Im ready if theres no heat from huge storms
Candles are cheap, safe, and do the job of taking the chill off the air just fine. Buy a bunch at a dollar store, keep them in a tin can with lid, with a book of matches. And you're all set.
great video man ! ive beent hinking about buying a fire pit for my deck ,too cold out there for my smokes (: but now im gonna just make one of these. just saved me a hundred bucks.thanks !
Thanks sweetheart, this is a great tip and it just makes me feel better knowing that I will forever have this useful information tucked back in my mind but unlike all the other useless information this is something that really helps in emergency situations, I'm going to search for supplies now. xo
Same principle as alcohol stoves for boats: no liquid slopping around. Thanks for the reminder. Think about making some refinements like using another can to contain the flames.
If nobody has said this yet it would be a very smart idea to put out the fire before "topping off". It was not memtioned in the video but should also be common sense to do so. You never know if someone is dumb enough to follow the directions in the video or if they are smart enough to have common sense
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I do have a question though. How long would a pre-made one survive in the car? My thoughts are I guess how long will the toilet paper last as a suitable wicking material before it just turns itself to mush and becomes non existent. Again thanks, I think it is a brilliant idea. right now I keep an empty large pea can and emergency candles for such use.
If you are planning ahead by bringing this stuff with you, there are much better things you could bring with you instead. Cell phone to call for help, for example. A wax-based fire source will burn longer and safer; you have to open the window for air anyway no matter which fuel you burn. Cars are not made to be safe places to have a fire, so this is as a last resort if you're going to die anyway.
I have to laugh at so many comments from those that don't understand the properties of isopropyl, how it burns cleaner than the gas ranges used to cook dinner every night in half the households in the country pretty much eliminating the possibility of carbon monoxide poison, assuming you'd use this device in a moving vehicle (WTF? If your car is drivable and you have an accessible road wouldn't you think to drive to a more hospitable location while keeping warm along the way using the car's own HEATER CORE?), not realizing how incredibly small air molecules are and how you'd pretty much need to crack the windows more on account of the heat generated making you uncomfortably hot rather than as a source of oxygen, and how the alcohol in the wick is basically not in a liquid form that would spill, but more like a vapor that would stay put inside the smaller can, etc. But despite all this, they are so confident in their own "common sense" knowledge as to insist that using this device will cause you to become unconscious either from CO poisoning or asphyxiation, thus crashing your moving vehicle, generating a massive inferno, and then having the balls to mock and call a well-prepared survivalist an idiot when said survivalist makes it through the night (toasty warm, even!) in sub zero temperatures, while the detractors are quite a bit more likely to be found in their emergency sleeping bags, frozen completely through, and in fact quite dead. They also might not believe you can create an emergency refrigerator (say you need to keep insulin cool while stuck in the desert for a day, or something along those lines) with those same two paint cans, something sharp enough to poke holes through metal, some leaves or clothing, plenty of sun, and your very own piss. Weird, but true. Science. It works.
I'd like to know about the refrigerator because of my heart condition and it makes me where I cannot handle the heat. (Well, I can, but my heart can't.)
See the comment below. I'm doing this in a very large kitchen, and the heat was incredible rising out of this. No burn marks anywhere whatsoever, not even on the paper. I set the large can lid gently on top and the fire went out in 4 seconds. Cools down fast. The flames rose about 8 to 9" at times, which would alarm me in a vehicle I suppose. How would I use this for cooking? If I put a pan on the can, it would act as a lid and put the fire out. I hope you can answer, this is NICE !
That yellow flame is not a complete burn and will make soot and likely more CO. I would love to see this kwikee burner made so that it runs a blue flame. I have run a propane heater in the car with a window cracked open. That way I can sleep with a good deal of faith that I will wake up. Thanks for the vid. I love home built contraptions ! Also, I have taken to carrying the hand and foot warmers around in winter. Bought mine at Lowes. Their foot ones are shaped more like a foot than just any old generic thing. .
It simply never fails... somebody posts a video; clearly stating it's intended use and then the keyboard physicists chime in. Here's the deal people- you're in your car- caught in a snowstorm, you have less then a quarter tank of gas, it's cold- and to keep warm, you have this heater thing. Yes- lighting fires is dangerous and if you're a total moron- you will light yourself on fire. But assuming you can walk and chew gum at the same time, this is better than freezing. Crack the window a bit to let out the very minimal toxic fumes that are emitted and you'll survive just fine.
Awesome video! Thanks, man. I'm thinking that if you used one of those cork trivets to set the can on in the car, there'll be no problem with heat. Open the car doors every so often (only for a second or two) to bring in some fresh air. I always worried about being stranded in a car in the cold. Thanks for the info!!
I carry a can of beans , toilet paper , rubbing alcohol, and empty paint cans in my vehicle at all times! it sits next to my box of condoms and bar soap i stole from the truck stop , after i spent some friend time with this girl named candy who is highly educated. she is older but she is nice, i hope one day she will marry me. but now we can stay warm in my minivan now :)
or a simple bar of soap in the door panel pocket, actually it has a purpose, and its not to clean other peoples skank off of me:) I have the luxery of not working in an office, but have yet to still use that bar of soap, hmm, lets see, beans, might be lunch on a day, crap! gonna need to carry a portable stove to cook them onsite, run to the grocery store, purchase some bacon to throw in said lunch, along with propane gas to cook with, then after 3 hours of slow cooking beans, and digesting them, I'll have a bar of soap for me and my wife to clean ourselves with...I'm running outta room in my ride to make any of this practicle, and i could have spent 1.49 on ten chicken nuggets at buger king in 3 minutes or less, and potentialy make more money, instead of cooking lunch for 3 hours, however i could serve it cold but then i wouldnt get none from the wife :( (breathing) sigh ran outta breath lol
Metal is a heat conductor and having the internal tin sitting on top of the exterior tin means that heat will be transferred to the outter tin easily. So, you shoiuld use a heat insulator like a piece of wood in the base of the outter tin or you may cause problems and melt or incenerate whatever it is sitting on.
great vid and great ideas, keep in minded the carbon build up thoug :P if used in a small non ventelated area as a car its actually best to open a window now and then
I think with a bit of tweaking (and a lot of very very careful use) and this is definitely headed for our car emergency case. I'm wondering if possibly using a small amount of concrete in the bottom of the larger can to build a thick (1-2 inches) fireproof base as well as possibly pouring some in the open 'wall' between the can - both as insulation and protection - might be a good step to add. The weather flips so fast in NE Ohio, it only makes sense to have options in case of emergency.
Cool, you could make it better by welding the small can to the large one, punching a bunch of holes in the large can, insulating the handle and using a longer lasting wick material like Kevlar. That way you could put the lid on and catty it by the handle like a lantern.
Yes. After each use, you'd top it off. The purer the alcohol (90% >) the better this is since the lower grade rubbing alcohols leave too much water behind so eventually you have to replace the toilet paper.
@bjizzle123 Not as impractical as being dead from being unprepared. A simple heater of this type could have saved many a person stranded in snow storms they never though would happen to them.
Add an extra lid and some aluminum foil stored inside the big can. Punch/drill holes in upper 1/2 of sides of large can and one of the lids. Use the holed lid for when burning. Wrap foil around large can to meter airflow. Stay gold.
Not sure about the wool, but I tested this and it was 4 hours into the burn before the tp even started to char. Burned this as a test inside for 6 hours before the tp actually started to burn. The alcohol was all that was burning. If you extinguish it for 5 minutes and refill the alcohol, the tp will last indefinitely or til it disintegrates from being in liquid.
How long does it burn from start to finish (in the exact example you demonstrated?) 3 hrs? 5 hrs? 12 hrs? 18 hrs? etc. That would be very helpful to know. So you could make more than one if it doesn't last very long.
You con't say where this can be placed in the car. It will get too hot to set on the dash or seats, won't it? Thanks for making this video. It's VERY helpful.
If you did want to use it in a car: a) crack a window EVER so slightly just to get some fresh air in even if it's super cold. b) keep something else in the car in the back like a piece of wood to go under the bigger paint can to insulate it. It won't catch fire on the bottom through the metal.
Great idea, thanks. I would add that it would be best to use toilet paper that has no other chemicals in it. Many are scented or have skin moisturizers in them. Probably best to be as chemical free as possible in an small space like a car. Thanks again. good thinking. Alcohol burns hot and clean
@romansten9 I suppose if you put holes on each side of the can and ran the hoses to the window and cracked the window just enough for the hose to reach it might work, but probably not because the hoses wouldn't be big enough to supply the oxygen and get rid of CO and CO2. By the time the holes are big enough you have both windows open 2 inches or more creating a cross breeze and most hoses couldn't take the heat anyway and would melt where they go in the can.
Hey Paul D. Thanks for your comment , Brother I appreciate it . I agree with your comment about a heat source ,and I think that this is a dangerous situation (this video) in my opinion. I've witnessed too many injuries and to many victims. a person must always be safe when handling flammable liquids, NEVER inside of a home or inside a vehicle.Stay SAFE Brother ! Good luck and Godspeed.
You can also use motor oil for this, (note: proper ventilation is important!!!) If in the car; roll one window down some or prop a door open part way for ventilation. These are better for sheds, or camping than a sealed vehicle in my opinion.
Ouestion. You mentioned to juast keep topping it off. How do you accomplish that without flames jumping up to the full bottle in your hand? I'm understand that we should kill the flame first, no?
i like the idea of it, a really good heat source as long as the people know how to do deal with boiling and burning alcohol. in my opinion the outer can or some container to douse the flame is extremly important. spilling that shit while bunrning could get ur car hotter than you want... :) anyways thx for the informaton! a fast and easy long time burning wick.
LOOK, it's Really a neat invention........with a little modification maybe a great soup warmer or something as well. let your mind be the leader.. and use common sense . Also to the comment of eastofacron1 must just be only 18 at the oldest, according to his language.Only not just disrespectful but shows how not only now, but how transparent his life is.
I use a candle with small candle holder.. Just put it in a large metal can to catch the dripping wax. I keep a blanket in the car as well. Works just fine.
CAUTION!!!! Never top up your stove while it is burning. Snuff out the flame first, wait several minutes for it to cool and then top it up and relight.
Thanks i bet that will defrost my minivan my heater bloer motor housing is plastic and it no longer holds the blower fan motor.I will position it in safe manner and ventilate😎👍👍thanks for sharing
@nipzilla I laughed at your remark so hard I almost passed out. WTF. C'mon, you gotta give this guy credit, it's a fantastic idea, and in a small enclosed space, this has got to work/warm enough air to feel a difference. I mean, c'mon, you aint trying to heat the living room, right? Or are you....
@christo930 what about drilling small hole (or 2) in the outer can and running some hose(s) to an adapter placed in the rolled up window. (would supply 02 and get rid of CO if done correctly)
I liked your video, no doubt about it; But, i think you failed to mention to. some viewers, not to replenish the heater with new alcohol while the flame is still on, also i really thought you was going to put the cap back in to the bottle before you lit the improvised heater, i think it was a little irresponsible of you to have that part skipped and failing to warn the viewers ; Just an observation!👍

@@ALSILVERU2 Definitely about 1/4 way down and would adjust it as needed. Sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less.
we have used therse heaters since i was a child. Im 48 now and still use them while hunting and fishing, they work .

Yes, a good candle is reported to keep temps inside a car above freezing.
That's a good idea. I will try this
That's bad too candles give off dirty fumes too. Unless its beeswax and a cotton wick.
CAN OF CRISCO WITH A LAMP WICK DIES THE SAME THING.
great video man ! ive beent hinking about buying a fire pit for my deck ,too cold out there for my smokes (: but now im gonna just make one of these. just saved me a hundred bucks.thanks !

Pro tip: Pull the ferrous rod backwards instead while keeping the striker still. Less chance of bumping/knocking over anything.

Ignore the negatives mate. Good video, good idea for many situations, and I like your site. Keep it up....
I made one of these for my wife a long time ago. Last year she was stranded in her car and used it. She would have been 46 tomorrow.
Not sure if hilarious or hilariously awful ;D
LOL!
Oops, I think he forgot the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Disclaimer.
Phil Dyer 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hope this was a joke because I burst out laughing!
Hope that was a joke bcuz I rotflmfao when i read that
You got out just in time my friend. Get a Younger wife
Pretty cool last resort if lost and stuck in the snow! I don't know if I would want to use up the valuable toilet paper though 😅.
great last ditch effort to get warm. would be great to keep in a small shed or ice fishing shack. GREAT VID!
I did this and its great!

Now and Zzzzzzzz.
We use diesel for the dear blind,no smoke,no smell, just long lasting heat. Not sure in a confined space, but nice vid, thanks :)
I've used that method for 2 years now inside my mobile home when I ran out of Propane. The 91% alcohol has no fumes.
thanks. you are a good teacher.
I think with a bit of tweaking (and a lot of very very careful use) and this is definitely headed for our car emergency case. great idea but how do i explain to the 2 bottles of 90% proof to the copper when he pulls me over? :)
cool vid i would use it as a stove outside but its basically a buddyburner just you use alcohal instead of wax
Would this work with kerosene? Or would it burn too hot or create too much smoke and fumes? Kerosene is something I always have on hand.
Yes. After each use, you'd top it off. The purer the alcohol (90% >) the better this is since the lower grade rubbing alcohols leave too much water behind so eventually you have to replace the toilet paper.

nice information thanks for sharing!
Looks like the inside of the can may contain BPA or BPS coatings. Will that release phthalates?
Yes it will!
Add an extra lid and some aluminum foil stored inside the big can. Punch/drill holes in upper 1/2 of sides of large can and one of the lids. Use the holed lid for when burning. Wrap foil around large can to meter airflow. Stay gold.
The coating in those cans will burn off too making toxic fumes. You have to pre burn them in a fire
Not sure about the wool, but I tested this and it was 4 hours into the burn before the tp even started to char. Burned this as a test inside for 6 hours before the tp actually started to burn. The alcohol was all that was burning. If you extinguish it for 5 minutes and refill the alcohol, the tp will last indefinitely or til it disintegrates from being in liquid.
interesting and unique idea. thanx brutha
Great Job I just learned somthing new today
I didn't have toilet paper so I tried what U said at 6:07. I cut my neighbors cat's tail off to use as a wick and got arrested. thanks
Too funny! You've won the Internet!
I love cats too but I admit that was so funny to picture. Thank you for the great humor this morning.
C Note 😂😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. I won't bother to read the other comments!
Isopropyl alcohol releases toxic fumes when burned so very good ventilation is a must!
Bravo!!!!!From Russia.....For Ice fishing!!!!!!
Open flames & combustion gasses - How can you characterize this as "perfectly safe to use in your vehicle?"
My thought exactly! Why not just build a campfire in your back seat!
MR BUDDY GOLF CART HEATER THAT FITS IN A DRINK HOLDER
cant you use ceramic wool like they use for bioethanol fireplaces as a more permanent solution that wont burn like the paper would?
Ouestion. You mentioned to juast keep topping it off. How do you accomplish that without flames jumping up to the full bottle in your hand? I'm understand that we should kill the flame first, no?
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADD ALCOHOL WHILE THE HEATER IS IN OPERATION OR HOT!!!
i like the idea of it, a really good heat source as long as the people know how to do deal with boiling and burning alcohol. in my opinion the outer can or some container to douse the flame is extremly important. spilling that shit while bunrning could get ur car hotter than you want... :)
anyways thx for the informaton! a fast and easy long time burning wick.
Could you just use a regular wick with rubbing alcohol?
Excellent Video. Subbed. Would like to see more.
I use a candle with small candle holder.. Just put it in a large metal can to catch the dripping wax. I keep a blanket in the car as well. Works just fine.
Hey, thanks a lot, my friend. Great information. Btw , how about using "HEET" (methylated alcohol) in the can instead of rubbing alcohol?
this is why you crack the windows a bit, ventilation is a must, even if it's freezing outside.
How long will one bottle of alcohols burn? Also how many bottles to one roll of TP, can you use? Thanks
CAUTION!!!! Never top up your stove while it is burning.
Snuff out the flame first, wait several minutes for it to cool
and then top it up and relight.
Maybe you should change the title, doesn't seem to safe to use inside a car.
But, awesome invention, Thanks.
How long will this burn?
awesome! I need to buy some toilet paper for my car along with the other practical stuff..Thanks!
Thanks i bet that will defrost my minivan my heater bloer motor housing is plastic and it no longer holds the blower fan motor.I will position it in safe manner and ventilate😎👍👍thanks for sharing
Great idea
Be honest, which is better to use and will last longer? Alcohol or crisco oil???
Is it really a good idea to be carrying around all that isopropyl alcohol in your car?
Ceramic wool will work too, and will never burn up. It will itch you, however.
Well doon…. I just threw out a bunch of odd Sox & t-shirts…. Crap, would have worked perfectly for this. I really like the 2x can idea.
Can gasoline be substituted??
@christo930 what about drilling small hole (or 2) in the outer can and running some hose(s) to an adapter placed in the rolled up window. (would supply 02 and get rid of CO if done correctly)
Can i use denatured alcohol or mineral spirits
I liked your video, no doubt about it; But, i think you failed to mention to. some viewers, not to replenish the heater with new alcohol while the flame is still on, also i really thought you was going to put the cap back in to the bottle before you lit the improvised heater, i think it was a little irresponsible of you to have that part skipped and failing to warn the viewers ; Just an observation!👍
are thier any fumes?
What's the total burn time for one of these?
You're so smart.
a couple tea candles in a cut down soda can will do the same and no need for flammable fluids
pretty cool
good job
Thank you!
lol how are you finding alcohol in nature but good video lol
Keep a few bottles of alcohol in your car's first-aid kit; could be useful in various scenarios.
Right, that's what I tried to tell the officer the half empty bottles of Tequila was for. Where's a witness when you need one?
It's that natured alcohol
Not DE-NATURED!
I'll see myself out, that was a terrible pun
A catalytic effect from burning alcohol for a heater? Is it possible? 😞😕
