Lucky me. This great performance showed up via algorithm and i clicked on it because of the down home look of the photo featuring Down Home. And now I know what a tremendous guitarist Calvin Keys was. I'd never even heard of him. The trio is wonderful and the bass sounds extra smooth.
So sorry to get this news. I just spoke with him a few months ago. We had a great time reminiscing about the years we spent sharing the bandstand with Calvin during our tenure together with Ahmad Jamal. Such a kind hearted brother, who was full of soul and wisdom. He will be missed. My condolences to his family. RIP Mr. Calvin Keys!
He was a nice man and had a great family. 25 years ago our kids were on swim team in Oakland with his daughter. We'd talk to him when he would show up to their swim meets. Good times!
So sorry to notice Mr. Keys is not with us anymore. I really enjoyed his performance with the fine teamwork of the superb drummer and bass player. Thank you so much for making this video accessible.
While serving in the US Air Force, early 1960's I was stationed near Omaha, Nebraska, and had the pleasure of listening to "California Cal" AKA Calvin Keys live on the weekends. I never met him, just listened to his skillful artistry of the guitar. It was an inspirational experience. And as a young guitarist (who could not play jazz at that time) it was encouraging to see and hear him perform. Rest in peace Calvin.
Didn’t know he left this earth. Thanks so much for this. Condolences to the family. I would run into C in Oakland Cali from time to time. Wonderful player, big loss.
Big Love to Calvin and his family...I hold dear the few times we interacted. He always made time, sat down and had a bite. "Yo Roch, Music is life and life is music...I think you know that".
From the first second to the last: beautiful clean tone, impeccable time, effortless harmonic and melodic brilliance. A joy to listen to, and a great way to remember a master. Thank you for uploading! I am sure the project will turn out great.
Never heard of him, and that is my loss. I am 78yo guitar player and he inspires me to keep on practicing. I wonder how many hours he logged in practicing. You got to love it. Beautiful man, and life.
Long ago I started hearing about the legendary album [Shawn-Neeq] and eventually I found the CD, which is a prized possession in my music collection. There's no other album anything like it, and although its creator has now passed, it is uplifting to know that every day somewhere on this planet Calvin Keys' music is being discovered and appreciated by more lucky listeners. --Thank you and Rest in Peace, Mr. Calvin Keys.
Playing chord melodies is my main weakness of playing guitar! I'm more of a pseudo jazz musician than an actual jazz musician but maybe one day. Sure wish this fine gentleman could show me a thing or two!
...first time to hear Mr. Calvin Keys. His solos are beautiful. Condolences to family and friends on his passing. i will certainly look into Calvin's recordings. Kruzic and Marshall are both solid and smooth. Great trio. Kudos on the production work, too. Thank you. I wish i could do a remix of this performance -- the players have such control, and jazz recordings are so inherently pure. Great job.
Calvin was a friend of Pool and Billiards. He loved to hang with us and was a decent stick. We knew he was a great musician but he was an old skool pool player to us. Loved the green apron he always wore while playing pool, over 30 years in my time. Great legend, will miss you Cal, from your pal the kid champ.
I'll admit I've never heard of this guitar player. And thought I knew anyone that was anybody lmmfao 😂😂😂😂. But this shit here is jazz guitar, and he reminds me of Miles Davis. Who I love. Rest in glory King.
I am heart broken, I spoke with Calvin a couple of weeks ago, I met him in Denver in the early sixties, knew Barbera his 1st wife and I met Maria his present wife. He is missed, sending so much Love to the Family, 😢🙏 Carolyn.
The last tune we played for this concert was a Horace Silver composition called “Cool Eyes”, from the record “6 pieces of silver”. We recorded it in a studio and hoping that will be released someday.

He wasn't too popular. Hard to find recorded media with him.

Wow. Heavily awesome.
Listening in from a distance (Denmark), but what a nice event. Would have loved to sit in and enjoy the music, thanks!

The first tune we opened up with is "Satchmo's Song", written by Horace Silver. Second is "Love and Innocence", by pianist Elmer Gibson,
