Good video i am in the process of getting my small building together so i can do some forging. It's great to see your positive attitude and humor. Hey its great to be able to roll with the punches. Takecare i look forward to future video's.

I fought the same thing and was using very similar burners. What turned out to be my problem was I was making a very oxidizing environment due to too much air for the gas I was burning. Once I choked back the air a bit and started using a piece of coat hanger wire to see if it was ready to stick, I started getting much better results. The coat hanger wire will stick a bit like it has glue on it when the base met is hot enough on the outside surface. Be sure to soak it long enough to get your heat deep into the part before doing your general first taps.

For me what helped is my first welding was done with oxy acetylene. So not only do I have shade 5 glasses lying around so I can actually look at the steel when it’s that hot, I can compare it to what it looks like when welding.

It does indeed. I have a good idea of the likely alloys, but cracks could pose a serious problem. Thing is, me and my three brothers all fenced. I fenced for 13 years! So I have a bundle of maybe 30 pounds of broken blades from me and my brothers and I have a plan to use them.... :D

I've seen Forge Harder use hose clamps w success. Most just weld the ends n sides. Even seen the wire deal. Some soak the bullets in ceroceene or deisle.
Idk, maybe on the last billet ... well I looked like it started good what w the hammer setting. I'm curious if you did or didnt press it to much with out taking another heat? No really I dont know.
Next thing ya know your gona be cutting and stacking and twisting your way to an awesome billet!

I’ve heard that you can even dissolve the flux in water to help get it inside of things like cable. I dunno about hose clamps, I mean I’m sure it works, but doesn’t it ruin the clamp? I’ll have to check that out.
I’m thinking yeah, maybe it was too much squishing without another heat. The other possibility is perhaps when the billet was prepared, it wasn’t preheated. Bandsaw blades are so thin, I could see the MiG welding damaging the structure of the steel.

I had a couple of guys charge me to fix some leaks in my roof. When they said they were done, it rained and I had more leaks than before they started. So, I'm going to get some hose clamps and clamp their heads together and see if I can get their faces to forge weld into each other, I'll try it first with a 2lb hammer and progress to a 5 lb hammer. I won't need to flux either since their blood will keep their faces clean of impurities. I'll try to video tape the process so that it might help someone else deal with incompetent help that never comes back to repair their shoddy work. One dude is white and the other is black, so I should get some nice handyman patterned damascus flesh blanks with high contrast. I might make a big sword with them, just in case I hire lousy help again. Wish me luck, nice job on beginning your forging!

Where ya been man!? Try using hose clamps on some of the bigger pieces you try and put together.

      Interesting idea!
I’ve been here, just head down and working. I love making these videos, but it doesn’t pay the bills. I’m about a year in and my funds are about tapped out so I’ve had to start picking up shifts at my old gig.
Still, it was totally worth it to be full time at it for as long as I was. It really let me get things moving. Every little bit I get from RUclips and Patreon helps and as that grows I’ll be able to put out more content :) and work towards being a full time smith and craftsman for good!

@@BennettTheSmith Totally understandable man. I quit my last job building ambulances to try and go full time welding and smithing on my own along with bushcrafting. Not exactly panning out the way I was expecting and probably going to have to pick something up soon too. But dude, you're a hell of a craftsman regardless. Remember that. And when shit (eventually) hits the fan, guys like us are gonna rule the world lol.

Hey bro ive tried forge welding a handful of times and i still suck at it. But i dont have a power hammer (yet)
What size hammer are you using is that a 3 pounder?? Could you go back and forth between it and a 6 pound hammer??

    • @BennettTheSmith
      @BennettTheSmith  4 года назад +1

I’m not actually sure, it’s a random hammer head I found, handled, and ground a rounding face onto. It’s between 2 and 3 I think.
I have heavier hammers, but I have heard that especially for the first pass on a billet, you really want light fast blows to tack it together without squishing too much. Otherwise each blow might break the weld of the previous blow.
On the other hand, that only really worked with the stacked layers billet. Maybe for welding one piece of bar to another a heavier hammer would do better. Hmmm.
