@@MikeB128 He's right. Rangers wore M1s, but the 82d troops deployed had Kevlars. There is a Kevlar in the museum on Bragg with an AK bullet still stuck in it from Urgent Fury.
We didn't get these until the late 80s. We used the M1. Nice for washing in. Limited ballistic protection. I think it was rated for 45auto. 9mm would blow through it though. More of a battle field hard hat to protect against falling rocks dirt or shrapnel, ricochet etc. Decent for digging in relatively soft earth, like Sandy or loam soil. When we heard about these being developed, along with the M16A2 and hard body armor new uniforms, we knew the Army was serious about force multipliers in terms of serious gear upgrades. Just needed some serious pay upgrades...... lol
@@MikeB128 Yeah it was a design that lasted for around 40 years. From WWII to the early 80's. Another thing about the M1 is at certain angles a bullet can enter and exit the helmet without injuring the wearer. These were rare occurences but documented. Now the KPOT helmet I have is pretty comfortable after I swapped out the suspension system with the modular suspension system with the removable padding.
Thanks it’s my favourite helmet design there’s a company in the uk who still make them so when I join the army next year I’ll buy one to swap my virtus helmet
Yeah that's not a good idea. The Virtus is an ECH with a hell of a lot better ballistic protection. If you're going to get one of these, just get it for collection purposes. The Mk7 is comparable to this helmet as well, and is more comfortable.
I used the new Kevlar helmet from 1988 on, but with a woodland camo pattern cover & elastic strap with two luminous patches facing backwards. The thick gauge material dulled our artillery noise somewhat and protected us from crashing our head into stuff. Worked fine shooing my M-16A2 at the range. I liked it. First guy to take a 7.62x39mm round to a Kevlar was a ranger during the invasion of Panama. Helmet saved him.
This is the most by far, *the best helmet* i will ever had to buy. I know _the hate_ behind this helmet, just because "the liner system" is not very that good. But hey _modifications_ shall do the trick with some *Padding System* on it. Anyways i could just buy the Lightweight Helmet if i wanted to, and btw great video buddy. 😃
Yeah this was my "go to" helmet for the longest time with the padding system. Now the ECH has replaced it, but I'd still feel confident with one of these.
I spent many a year wearing that… I served in the Marine Corps in the early 2000’s. Took part in the initial invasion of Iraq. We just called them “Kevlar’s” even though they were the PASGT. They did upgrade the suspension system eventually. Nowadays they have helmets that will stop Armor Piercing 7.62 rifle velocity rounds. This was unheard of when I served. The Kevlar would stop a 9mm or shell splinters and fragments.
Yeah man, we tested the "ECH", or Enhanced Combat Helmet a couple years back and it stopped a 7.62x51mm 147 GR FMJ round at 100 yards. We've also tested PASGT and ACH (Kevlar) helmets and they stopped a lot more than 9mm and such. And yeah, we called them "helmets" or ACHs when were in , but that was a different time and branch (about 6 years after you were in) but we all knew what was being talked about.
@@MikeB128 true. We also would say “helmet” as well. Armor is really making “leaps and bounds” in its capability. It’s pretty cool from a historical perspective to watch. Oh btw thanks for your service. Hope your Independence Day went well. Thanks for the video/info.
Thanks very much for the review. What size should I look for to suit 60cm noggin. I would like to add one to my collection. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.
I like the ach design better, but as of rn I'd say ECH is by far my favorite although I wish they made a high cut version of the ECH shell so I could attach coms.
@@MikeB128 I know most are pretty much bike helmets, but if it was an ECH shell trimmed a bit on the side with rails that would be nice imo, I know standard helmet can wear headset underneath but it's a bit uncomfortable after a while.
Hi mike this is a bit of an irrelevant question but do you know if any of your flektarn helmet covers would fit a WZ2000? I'm trying to emulate a b826 schuberth kevlar helmet. Any help is appreciated, love your videos
Do you have any idea how to get the M84 with the two-point strap in Europe? I have an issue with ITAR (Yeah I'm totally arming a militia with one decades old kevlar helmet)
There are a lot of U.S. bases in Europe, so I don't see why it would be impossible for you to find one. Also, fuck ITAR. It screws my small business out of so many small sales.
we find these up here in Canada, and I have one coming... I am thinking about up grading the suspension to a 4 point any ideas? Does anyone know where I can find a flectarn cover that will fit?
Do you sell or know anyone who does sell these for a fair price or cheaper price then what I've found on eBay and other sites I'm looking for any XS or sm sizes
Remember in the early 1980s WW2 was a recent, living memory for many people. I remember people being upset with the Beretta M9 (a P38 derivative) because it was a Nazi gun in a Nazi caliber. It is strange to think we are as far away from the 1980s as the 1980s were from the 1940s
These helmets were actually first used in 1983 in Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada) by the 82nd Airborne Division.

Yeah I've made several videos about the M1. It was an okay design but yeah this thing is far superior in just about every way. Thanks for watching!

It’s got the same liner as a mk7 and it’s called a PST 650 they are brand new but the virtus comes with a better accessory list
@@Ks-zv6js bro ur gonna get 1 tapped wearing a pasgat new or not. I'd highly advise sticking with the new helmet.

I make a lot of mistakes in life, my videos are no exception as I make them all on the fly.

High cut helmets are almost pointless. May as well just wear nothing but a hat at that point.
