"The first ballade is one of his most famous pieces, you can go to any music conservatory or university around the world, and you hear all these students practicing it. It has a sort of attraction to all pianists and it is understandable. It is just a perfect piano piece. It’s just a line, unison line, going up, both hands playing the same thing, not really a melody, nothing and little by little you get to some chords and suddenly a door opens and you have this unbelievably beautiful melody and it’s really memorable." - Leif Ove Andsnes

I love the build up right before the coda when the main theme returns.. My God Chopin was so phenomenal.
My favorite Chopin, and I’ve listened to many of the best interpreters, but I can’t shake the feeling that this was exactly the way Chopin would have played it. Simply breathtaking performance.
What a wonderful performance. I bet it's every pianists goal to learn this piece.
Pretty much yeah! XD
Even the coda alone is satisfying enough for me tbh😂
You definitely aren't wrong haha One of my closest friends learned it and its definitely made me want to challenge myself, so Im in the process of getting the notes down
I've been practicing nothing but this for the past 5 months. Doable, but hard. A former editor of the Guardian recently wrote an entire book about how he tried to learn this piece.
@@steveweinstein3222 sounds epic 😗
Good God, that's the best interpretation I've ever heard, as if everyone else was making it way too complicated and grossly over-exaggerate the rubato till there is no metric left, when this ballad is just a simple pastoral at heart. The dynamics are perfect played in relaxed manner.
garrick ohlson, seongjin cho, horowitz, and zimmerman. take listen to this.
I could not agree with you more. All the greats in the past have performed this (as noted by Nicholas), but to my layman ears it all fits together perfectly here.
What do you guys thing about this interpretacion? ruclips.net/video/kXRSqMyD1lM/видео.html
Baremboim interpretation is my favorite, the part of 3:20 in andsnes interpretation I think is a little bit to fast, instead, Baremboim, in my opinion play this part and in general the piece better. (But of course Andsnes interpretation still great)
But what do you thing about Barenboim interpretation?
Very best ❤
Haven't you heard Arthur Rubinstein? This pianist is playing all the notes, but there is no heart, no voice...no phrasing, singing from your soul. It's like he's playing a Czerny etude. NO PASSION. JUST NOTES UP AND DOWN. The music is the language of the soul and heart and one has forgotten it. So sad that the audience can not identify it anymore.
Mr Andsnes really manages to tell a story through this performance. From small details here and there to the broader picture. Among my favourite interpretations!
the album is a complete joy
As a pianist on the making -speaking of myself, his so relaxed way of playing and his so informal way of dressing so casual makes him human and , makes me feel like I can do and play such a melody in the future. Greetings from Costa Rica !

Wonderful interpretation and technique. It's diferent in comparison to other pianists, minimalistic hand movements. Bravo! 👏😁
He makes everything he plays look easy. He would get a lot more views if he put the composer's name in the title. Probably the best pianist in the world today and hardly anyone on youtube knows about him.
I cannot give another Like 👍 to this superb performance at every time I watch it, but I can say again how marvellous it is! 💯
Thank you, Leif! 🎹 💙
Wow I adore you. Great and sensitive, technical, but also musical playing!
Not just that you record in such a beautiful place that potrays classical mood and nuance.
And also you are such a good figure to see. Sometimes many pianist forgot about figure look, they concentrate on technically playing, but forgot bring the figure nuance.
I adore you! I become a big fans of you, Mr. Leif Ove Andsnes! God Bless!
Hands down, the single best performance of this piece I've ever heard. Well done Mr. Andsnes....and thank you
much less rubato than many other performances I've heard, it brings a purity to it that I simply adore
Yes, many grossly over exaggerate the rubato.
It is hard to describe why this version hits me so hard, because of my bad english, as the swede I am , but it really goes to the bottom of this music to dig up some more, and to the bottom of me too. Thank you, Leif Ove.
This is because like all extraordinary musicians, he respects Chopin's music and style and when you add his own incredible musical talent which is always subtle, you get this so deeply emotional result (we're far from the marshmallow syrup we hear from some other current pianists...). He's my favorite pianist with Menahem Pressler, Van Cliburn, Horowitz and Krystian Zimerman...
Came here after seeing the movie, 'the pianist'...with a few tears in my eyes....got here and had few more rolling down with the memories....hats off to u gentleman.
Exactly what I would expect from this very fine artist. The music comes first - everything is in proportion, finely balanced and conceived. The interpretation is entirely free from self-serving idiosyncrasy or exaggeration. Bravo!
I really enjoyed how he managed to balance the structure of the piece with the immense attention to small details
Absolutely one of the best interpretations of this famous Ballade I have heard, if not the best?
Leif Ove plays this piece like he is from another more intelligent civilisation from another galaxy who wants to teach human kind how good music can be played. This is perfect.
Very well put :)
Look for the recording of Garrick Ohlsson playing this piece - a little slower but one of my favourite interpretations
@@nicholaswouters1203 I don't like his version as much as this sorry.
@@TorAndreKongelf Fair enough :) There is also a beautiful version played as a duet with violin from the anime your lie in april - Leifs playing is very close to that version
@@nicholaswouters1203 Leif* :)
Now , thats how this ballade show sound...fantastic..mature, emotional, flawless, relaxed and effortless...brilliant Leif...
Omg, the clarity, the musicality, the phrasé... Incredible ❤
Esta es , lejos , la mejor interpretación de Chopin que he escuchado. Felicitaciones Sr Leif Ove Andsnes!
What an evocative performance! Wow! Bravo, maestro!
Listened again on Chopin's birthday. March 2022. Just superb!
Zeer blij dat ik in dit stille avonduur deze mooie, intieme ballade mag beluisteren!
He appears to be so immersed in his passion for playing that it would make no difference to him whether a trillion people were watching or nobody at all.
WOW. HOLY. This is the best rendition of the ballade i have ever heard in my life. Better than any other pianist that I have ever seen play this piece. You played all of my favorite parts of the piece absolutely perfect. 10/10 performance. Amazingly done mr.Leif!
Ryan Pena check zimmerman 😂
You have to check Garrick Ohlsson too
@@josephsaleh6772 Zimmerman isnt even close to this
He follows Chopin's timing and dynamics as written quite closely, which many do not.
His playing with less rubato than many others is also in line with what is known of Chopin's own playing.
@@mossfitz I agree. Many pianists tend to use way too much rubato for Chopins music. I see a comparion between Czernys music and early Chopin.
Bravo! Pure deligth: the sound the frasing, everything!
Thank you for posting without commercials! So beautiful!
Wonderful interpretation, leaves me speechless ! It's amazing to make the piano sing this way, just the way Chopin would have loved. I think it's one of his most beautiful pieces, and this is one of the very best interpretations I have ever heard - only Zimmermann reached this level of purity among those I know. Thank you for this pure beauty !
This by far the best rendition of the first Ballade I've heard on RUclips. I'm sure a lot of people might agree.
Check Zimmerman, he probably has the best recording of this Ballade, but man, this one has some good technique and is good quality, very interesting
I have played the piece for 50 years so I know it inside out! The best performance on You Tube.
@@michaeltraub3614 Wish I could play it some day. How long were you playing for when you decided to tackle the piece?
@@ritiksrivastava3093 I learned the ballade when I was about 27 years old. I started playing the piano by ear as a 2 year old copying my elder sister's playing. I began formal lessons at age about 6 and learned until I was about 20. Then began lessons again when I was about 24 and went on with lessons for many years. I played in an international piano competition in Paris in 1971 but did not progress beyond the first round.
I have a Bachelor of Musicology degree as well as performers and teachers licenciates - 2 of each. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa.
@@michaeltraub3614 I never thought of South Africa to be such a musically diverse country. Regardless, it's crazy to even imagine and put into words how much you must've practiced over the years. I'm in class 12 and started playing 2 years ago. I started playing the ballade a few months ago and still can't quite play it. Still compared to you I think I have a lot of years ahead of me. I'm from India.
Leif Ove Andsnes is definitely wonderful! 😍
He is a huge pianist! 🎹💯
Most trained pianists play tis and none of us ever get the magic he gets in even one phrase . I notice how he changes fingers on the same key and in moving and in bringinging hand forward . So many things I never figured out or heard my teacher say and his pedaling so musical and the textures and imagery he can bring up . So much magic and imagination - it s more than fingers and he doesn't believe in the crazy 19th century rubatos that pianists consider bad taste and yet he still gets so much into the music . It takes so much to make music . I found this music in high school 40 years ago and still every time I think or play its passages there aarea thousand decisions to make and I'll never be able to even copy the sounds (the music) he gets here .
Very powerful performance, I won't lie and say there are some parts which I liked more in Zimmerman's performance but yours is on the same level as I love the powerfulness you put into some parts!
This is one of the best ballade performances I’ve heard you sound exactly like Rousseau
I noticed that too, it sounds so similar right?
@@AryaStark47 yes I does :)
Absolutely in love with this interpretation... beautiful performance 😊
Masterful as always. What a delight to have this little taste of wonderful music played by my favorite pianist ever.
Stunning in its composition and how you played it. Delightful. ❤
Beautiful, thank you for bringing so much joy to my life.
Perfect playing, amazing story telling
Beautiful sound and he doesn’t rush the tempos.
I love this interpretation so much!
Mr Andsnes you awaken all my sences...I ❤ how you play the piano.🌹🌻
By far my favourite interpretation
Perfectly beautiful. Bravissimo!
I wonder how much work it took the piano technician to make the Boston piano sound that good?
Yes, the best Boston piano I’ve ever heard. Much much better than my GP178🤣
Sublime. Love the feeling that you put into your work.
Brillante interpretación, encantada, muchas gracias, saludos cariñosos! 💖🎶🎶💖
The very first interpretation of this piece I heard as a child was by Tamas Vasary and has always been my favourite ever since. The ultimate Chopin interpreter. I have just found another in Leif ove Andnes. He definitely has the feel for Chopin. Superb performance.
Such an amazing performance. Speechless.
You should add "Chopin" at the video title
No you don’t
Show him how it's done, then.
There is no reason for that.

Exquisite playing!
Just one word... Masterpiece
Breathtaking. I got teary eyed :)
Oh so so beautiful
great! from south korea!
Love watching Leif play because he has such good technique and his playing is so clean. Reminds me of Ashkenazy.
Yes,but with more feelings, Ashkenazy is only tecnique
Perfect!
bravo!!!
Bravo!!
Awesome interpretation
wonderful interpretation. It resembles Evgeny Kissin's one, intense but not too fast on the coda's start, perfect! One of the few to have understood how to tell the story. Thank you!
lovely
I just...fell in love 🥰✨🥰✨🥰🎵🎶
so beautiful and restorative...I put it on for background music, but had to stop look at other things and just LISTEN!
Bravo!
This is exceptional perforformance
What a wonderful performance!. Sense, from the begening to the end. Marvellous dynamics..., the triple pianisimo, reminding the main theme at the end..so well done. Thank you Leif.
Fantastique!!
Pure passion ❤
majestuosa interpretación ,good preformance, el ballad in G minor .,por un virtuoso
Thats fantastic.
Perfect.
I came across with the artist accidentally when I first heard the fifth impromptu by Jean Sibelius. The rendition seemed to me as amazingly performed. Since then I follow Mr Andsnes
komme einmal auch nach Zürich zu spielen
2.40 arrival in Heaven...? Chopin would have loved this! There is no over dramatization or ugly forte playiing, no dragging tempos or unwritten rubato.
Beautiful transitions!
Ja, das ist schnell genug! So viele Pianistinnen und Pianisten verwechseln Musik mit Sport oder Artistik - hier macht wirklich jemand Musik.
Grazie....🙏🏽❤️
Great going👍👍👍
Excelent Boston Piano 🎹 Sound!
his play perfect cleary proportion
MAGNIFICO !!!!
Mint-kvalitet.
Utrulig dyktig og allsidig kunstner.
I love this interpretation very much. If I were to play this piece I would play it this way thank you so much.

That little Boston piano sound awesome! Very interesting rendition.
Incredible. Can't believe that's the sound of a Boston piano - he made it sound incredible.
donkgated Ikr? The quality of the recording is amazing
I listened to this Boston piano version before Seong Jin Cho's Yellow Room performance (on RUclips). It's amazing how different the two pianos sound
Hermoso👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻🎶💐

BRAVO MAESTRO! Kazakhstan.
I had not heard this piece until I saw The Pianist. I love it! But I know I will never be able to play it. :-(
Practice mate, that's all u need, and determination. If u got that, i bet u can play it better than him
