I have been a Sam’s Club member since 1990. It has always been the rule not to loan your card to another non-member. I have always followed this rule. I have taken friends with me to Sam’s Club. That was never an issue.
I am so surprised to hear that Costco membership was different prior to this date. At least, there is a clarification of the problem.

Don’t know where you are, but our Costco you cannot use your phone to scan and pay…..you can at Sam’s Club, which I love that feature!

My Sam's club card has had a photo on it since at least 1997 and Costco photo since 2014. Of course mine are not active because I live no where near one.
