Pretty good for a bunch of white guys from Scotland!!
(I know the drummer's a black guy, but he was a later, & very welcome, addition to the band!)
AWB was a great favourite on Soul Train, in the early 70's, & unlike some bands, they ALWAYS performed live!!
What can I say? If you got it, you GOT it!! 😍

The AWB were far from average back in the day. One of the funkiest bands anywhere. Their first four albums were/are national treasures here in the UK and they have a mix of love ballads, hard funk and everything in between (with funk).
Most people only know their chart hit singles 'Pick Up The Pieces' and 'Cut The Cake' but they are only the tip of the iceberg of gems. Do yourselves a favour guys, buy their albums, 'Show Your Hand 1st album', 'AWB', 'Cut The Cake' and 'Soul Searching'. You will be amazed.

I was lucky enough that one of my regular bars in Downtown Pasadena, early 70's, the Loch Ness Monster also had live music almost every might of the week, a pool table, & Guiness Beer on tap because the owner was Scottish, & even then I avoided Butt-Wiper beer & this is where I discovered European Beers & by chance come to briefly hang with the Average White Band before & when their fame started. There was a back patio with a door to the alley among the empty Industrial buildings around the bar which is why Pasadena let the bar get loud. One of my favorite places to hang till closing, playing pool, drinking Guiness Stout, beautiful women to meet, & live music. I had a lot of friends in local bands that played around the blossoming Downtown Pasadena that was nothing but closed retail stores at night with bums & prostitutes wandering around. The Loch Ness started a revitalization that brought 5 star dining, live music in every other place. Anyway I & others would slip out the patio door to the alley to compare & share some of the various things besides cigarettes that people were smoking those days to relieve stress. The Average White band started playing there because they came over from Scotland to sing their Scottish Soul music that was "too Funky"for the Average white guy (a joke). So after hearing them for the first time in that intimate setting ( me & a dozen people) they called "Break"so I introduced myself outside in the patio where a few of them were smoking cigarettes, "come out to the alley & see what my friend & I are smoking-if you like". So the lead singer & 2 or3 others came out & we did our thing. I remember them thanking us but they said to never let the (either the Bass player or the drummer) smoke it because. they lost their timing then, unlike them, they could hang, in fact they were even more soulful after "BREAK" This went on for a month or two. I guess there was 6 or 7 of them, living in one room, over the bar?, the owner had help other UK bands come over I guess. They said he could not pay much at first, but his wife fed them & they got some cash after shows. Well word spread, & within the 3rd or 4th week there was 50 or so inside dancing, etc & a hundred more lined up in the parking lot hoping someone would leave so they could get in. About the 2nd month, at Break time in the alley, the lead singer/guitarist (I forgot his name) said "Dan, check this out", & he showed me a check for $30,000 or so. He said "Stevie Wonder's People came & saw them & gave them that check as a down-payment on a recording contract" We all celebrated because we knew they were destined to be stars. I got to see them from 3 feet away dancing with the crowd while they rocked the place from their little corner of the dance floor til closing. Never saw them again after that! What a time!

Hi There My MIxxED Reactions Friends, The Average White Band (a.k.a. AWB) is a Soul, Funk and R&B Band out of Scotland who have been doing it since 1972 to this present day in 2023!!! These guys are not pretenders, they are the "REAL-DEAL!!!" And they have a very deep musical catalog to react to with several hits, such as: "Pick Up The Pieces," "Cut The Cake," "School Boy Crush," "Cloudy - Live 6:36," "Work To Do," "Person To Person," "Queen Of My Soul," "If I Ever Lose This Heaven," "Would You Stay?," "Atlantic Avenue," "Soul Searching," "Sunny Days Make Me Think Of You," "You Wanna Belong," etc...This is just a taste, and there's still more of where this came from!!! Their name derived from a joke, as they had a friend who traveled to different parts of the world and upon returning from his travels, he would say things like "that place was either "too cold" or "too hot" for the average white man, and one day he cracked a joke about their music being too funky for the average white man, and a couple of the band members thought "hey let's call ourselves the Average White Band!!!" So they agreed on it, the name stuck and the rest is history!!! It has never & was never meant to have any racial connotations, as a matter of fact without ever seeing them first, most people thought they were actually a Black Band because of their soulful & funky sound. AWB was the 1st white group to ever play "LIVE" on SOUL TRAIN back in the day!!!

AWB was one of the coldest bands to ever do it! Straight Out Of Glasgow Scotland! 👊🏽

PLEASE listen to the studio version of this song. There's more. Also, "Person To Person", "Queen of My Soul", " Pick Up the Pieces" & "Cut the Cake" to name a few by AWB. DEFINITELY not average. 💛
