Have you tried hitting mobs when you’re jumping up for a crit. Hear me out. Normally crits work when you’re falling but since this is upside down maybe you have to be going up (since in reality you’ll be going down)
this run was crazy, if you're planning on continuing for a better time one small optimisation i can think of is to use your lava bucket to go down instead of pillaring down in the nether
As far as crit hits go, (fall damage too most likely) the game is looking for any negative y velocity. That's the reason punishing works in pvp for example. Since you're jumping in reverse, I'm guessing you could crit on the ascent of your jump instead of the descent. I don't know if you've tried that already. Fall damage checks for negative y fall distance too, so it makes sense there would be none.
This gives me the similar werid feeling of running in aether world the first time. I guess inverted world with deadly sky is like floating island with deadly void

I think to crit, you have to hit them on the way up. Cuz critting works coming "down" in your jump (toward the ground) so if you crit on the way up but you're upside down... that's the same thing.
How about building a portal from the bottom of the ocean where the magma blocks are? Or is it only for other Minecraft versions? It will save you a lot of time compared to finding a natural lava cave.

magma ravines only exist before 1.18 (or maybe 1.17?). its another reason why 1.16.1 is the best version for RSG
