  • In this video, we learn about the Sebright chicken.
    Quick facts:
    • Average weight (male): 625 g (22 oz)
    • Average weight (female): 570 g (10 oz)
    • Family: Phasianidae
    Origin:
This plucky breed was developed in England by Sir John Saunders Sebright - the 7th baronet of Sebright. He developed the breed by cross-breeding several chicken breeds, including a bantam hen, a gold-spangled hen, a pit-game cock, and a rose comb cock.
Sebright also founded The Sebright Bantam Club. Today, the Sebright is one of the most popular bantam breeds.
    Description:
The Sebright chicken is an ornamental breed. They are admired for their small stature and jaunty appearance. There are two main colour variants of Sebright chickens: gold and silver.
The edges of their feathers are black-laced. Other colours have been bred, including a black-laced lemon variant and a white-laced buff variant. Sebrights have un-feathered legs and brown bills.
Cocks have a red or purple rose comb. Sebright cocks are normally hen-feathered. Most males do not bear the long, sickle-shaped feathers in the tail, neck, and saddle typical of cocks.
    Breeding:
Sebrights chickens are difficult to breed. Hens rarely become broody, and the chicks have a high mortality rate. They are purely bred as ornamental show birds and not for meat or egg production. Hens lay up to 80 small eggs in a year.
    Behavior:
Sebright chickens are sociable birds. They are curious and active and well capable of flight. Sebrights typically have fine temperaments, but the males can become protective of their hens. They are vocal birds that produce a high-pitched call.
    Health:
Sebright chicks have a high mortality rate, and males are often born infertile. This breed is also susceptible to Marek’s disease.
