Great lesson! I love how you explain the difference between the tip and hsoulder of the stick right from the beginning of the lesson. Expalining that and when the rim of the snare being used makes understanding the accents so much easier. Thank you!
This has helped me with my transition to blues from rock. I could not get this beat for the life of me, but after seeing this, I'm on my way to finally grooving with my band.
Wow, for a "technical rock dude" this is one of the best blues shuffle examples on the youtubes (minus the busy fills and flams!). No "Purdie shuffle" (which isn't a shuffle, actually!), no synchopated bass drum beats; he does a pretty straight ahead job. Thanks Matt or Greg or whichever one you are!
This guy is like Bob Ross on the drums. Great teacher and very soothing tone of voice. Great video. I could watch a ton more with this guy. Im off to find his intsructional DVD's!
Wow! Without this being broken down, we'd never know about the tip and shoulder of the stick hit. What a SUPER valuable tip for playing. It makes such a huge difference!
Great lesson. Thanks for posting. I'm a guitarist using this info to program beats for scratch tracks of new material. Too cool of Gregg to credit Chris Layton for this beat.I've seen Chris play many times and yeah, he's the master of the Texas Shuffle. Terri still lives here, I believe. Cheers from Austin.
For everyone who is critical of the drum sound in this...you're absolutely right. I have the same setup (TD-12) and that sounds like one of the default kits. The module is capable of sounding way WAY better than you'd think from listening to the preloaded kits. I downloaded the VDRUMLIB software and uploaded some kit setups from around the net (easy to find using Google) and the difference is night and day. Just my point of view.
Nicely done. Great explanation. Interestingly enough, not all drummers here in Austin actually play a TXShuffle. I'm a guitar player in a trio and have just written a TXShuffle instrumental. I came to see how that rhythmic feel is going to carry through when there is no rhythm gtr playing the repetitive up beats, because to pickers, the up beats ARE the feel. My melody sang out loudly on top of your track. Great feel, Gregg! Thank you, very much.
Well, one thing about electric drums - if you don't like the sound, you can tweak 'em until you find a sound you do like. Even your acoustics are electric once the sound wave goes into your mic and head towards the PA speaker.
Kudos to the late Chris "Whipper" Layton if you wanna hear him in action listen to some Stevie Ray Vaughan. You'll be schooled in some blues alrght and you may wanna throw in some Fabulous Thunderbirds and Blues Bros. as well, happy blues playing and listening Y'all
Someone could tell me if there's a difference between Chicago and Texas shuffle? I've listened yes, not at all and also contradictory things about that so, what do you think? Some example to clearly understand?
Thanks Greg ( and Roland ) cool lesson. Love the Bozzio lick at the end , could do with a breakdown of that , watched it a ‘ few ‘ times, looks to me like this 16th note Triplets: KK /KKSSKK SSSSSSS KKTTKK SSSSSS / KKTTKK SSKKTT KKTTKK S. /
Greg I need some heavy funk ,supped up Texas heavy back pocket,,git grad,82,stuck in Georgia,it sucks,my playing is on point, need a heavy groove, can u help
Shuffle out to Buffalo, lol...what a great drummer teaching us about another great drummer! Met Gregg once at NAMM 09' This lesson is spot on. Thank you Gregg! This is my own homage to SRV and Mr. Layton: ruclips.net/video/v1bVw_nWKnI/видео.html
Hi awsome advices thanks a lot! take my friendly advice please; you should go to an ENT and get checked your vocal folds, I think you need voice therapy.. :)
saw Gregg perform a clinic with Virgil Donati and Dom Famularo in Perth Western Australia. Worse. Guy. Ever. Could kinda tell he was jealous of Virgil's incredible talent.
without a good sound man acoustic drums sound like crap........ its good tuning, comp, and eq , rev....that makes acoustic drums sound good, record a acoustic set without it you got noise.....lol
I love Gregg he is such a great musician and explanator
Always a beautiful groove from Greg. And great shout out to Bozzio!
Thanks Greg. One of the most concise drum teaching sessions I have ever seen. This really helps me!
Best Texas shuffle video on Utoob… thanks man … great breakdown 👍🏼
This guy is OUTSTANDING!
Wonderful drummer, wonderful teacher. Many thanks from Down Under!

Shuffle with your snare most importantly!! 4 on the floor.. don't Shuffle w your foot!

Thanks Greg , I remember going to your drum clinic way back @ studio 28 here in Michigan love the Texas shuffle

Very nice. I'm a guitar player and with your help it was easy to setup my drum computer.
Wow! Without this being broken down, we'd never know about the tip and shoulder of the stick hit. What a SUPER valuable tip for playing. It makes such a huge difference!
Same here. Was the missing piece of the groove for me. I guess I need to travel more :-)
Awesome beat! Awesome lesson! Thanks so much.
Thank you Greg! Great lesson !
Awesome. I love the shuffle of it all. Masterly played
Great explanation on the "Texas" Blues Shuffle. But now I'd like to see a breakdown of the Terry Bozzio lick!
Yeah Gregg! Always classy, talented, fun, and a great teacher. Thanks!
My favorite drum teacher!!!
ive been watching gregg since VHS :)
Thanks Gregg, I agree mate, Chris Layton is a top exponent of the Texas shuffle. I always admired his left hand independence.

This video really helped me, thanks to Gregg and Roland!
Queens of the stone age - God is in the radio. Dave ghrol is pretty good at it.
Es la mejor explicación de como tocar Shufle que encontré.
Gracias maestro !!!

Great shuffle Greg.

Tip tip shoulder, thank you Detorit!
Nice lesson! I wondered how that sound was created. I think ZZ top uses a similar sound in some of their songs. Tush for example?
the bozzio fill at the end was sick.
That's how you do The Shuffle, I can't find a drummer who does that properly for my Blues Trio!!
Gregg is great..

I like very much Gregg the first videop cassete i have ever seen has Private Lesson 17 years ago
Master

This is a great lesson, thank you. What do you think about playing the hi-hat on the and of 2+4? Is this a done thing?
Someone could tell me if there's a difference between Chicago and Texas shuffle? I've listened yes, not at all and also contradictory things about that so, what do you think? Some example to clearly understand?
1:58: "and that would sound like this"
Narrator: I doesn't sound anything like that.
Thanks Greg ( and Roland ) cool lesson. Love the Bozzio lick at the end , could do with a breakdown of that , watched it a ‘ few ‘ times, looks to me like this
16th note Triplets: KK /KKSSKK SSSSSSS KKTTKK SSSSSS / KKTTKK SSKKTT KKTTKK S. /
FYI: Layton wasn't the first. Everyone learned it from George Rains Waaay back. Chris got it on the air thru SRV
Gregg still reminds me of what's his name old version Johnny Lawrence from Karate Kid sequel's Cobrai Kai series.
Greg I need some heavy funk ,supped up Texas heavy back pocket,,git grad,82,stuck in Georgia,it sucks,my playing is on point, need a heavy groove, can u help
This beat along with other shuffles is one of the harder beats to play authentically as well as solidly. Use a click and play it on real drums.
wow this guy has got a really nice character, not common these days
lush electric kick
Texas shuffle comes from a subtle jazz swing … I could be wrong
Hence the name Roland...:D :D :D
setting on the control mod lessons ?
Both hand play in unison.
I've mastered the Texas blues guitar rhythm, so why won't it apply to my drums😂😂
no mames guey cuanto vale esa bateria en estos dias???

funny.
Especially the snare, it has an ugly ring to it.
saw Gregg perform a clinic with Virgil Donati and Dom Famularo in Perth Western Australia.
Worse. Guy. Ever.
Could kinda tell he was jealous of Virgil's incredible talent.
Care to elaborate more on this? Cause this is the first time i heard someone speak bad about Gregg Bisonette
the best texas shuffle drummer is george rains.... chris layton is a great blues drummer but i preferer george rains... :-)
I don't like the new electronics drums at all
The acoustic drums sounds better
without a good sound man acoustic drums sound like crap........ its good tuning, comp, and eq , rev....that makes acoustic drums sound good, record a acoustic set without it you got noise.....lol
Great drummer but those v drums sound bloody awful!
that is NOT how you do a Texas drum shuffle boy!!
