How to Mix Shadows & How to take a Bright Color and Tone It Down

  • By understanding the color wheel, we can take any color and make a convincing, naturalistic shadow. We can use the same principle to take any color and tone it down a bit or lower the chroma.
    In the color mixing demonstration, I show chromium oxide green and phthalocyanine green (yellow shade) to demonstrate how single pigment colors inherently have a higher chroma or lower chroma. Chroma is the term for color that is equivalent to saturation. It's how bright or intense a color is.
    Then using a cadmium red light hue and a pyrrole red, we mix the two together to get a third shade of red. I suggest lightening any color first with a lighter version of the color before you reach for white which will make the color a pastel or even sometimes chalky.
    Next I show the color wheel and demonstrate how to find the complement of any color by looking opposite the color on the color wheel.
    When I'm mixing shadows, I use the complementary color. So I show how to mix a shadow of the red by adding it's opposite on the wheel - green.
    This was filmed at Solano College in Fairfield California on February 13, 2014 in the class of Professor Jeanne Lorenz.

      On the color wheel, the lighter color that is located next to the color you want to lighten (plus white in case you require). For example: For lighten orange, use a little bit of yellow.

    I can't quite see the colour Red being less intense when you added Green. It just looks like a reddish light brown shade to me, not a less bright Red. Anyway, liked the info about the Colour Wheel.

    What would you use as a bass on glass to make your acrylic paint go on easier?

    • @MicheleTheberge
      @MicheleTheberge  4 года назад

      For proper adhesion, glass needs to be sandblasted. Or you could try painting on plexiglas and sand it first with sandpaper.

    • @MicheleTheberge
      @MicheleTheberge  4 года назад

      Also there are special craft paints that do adhere to glass. Such as the Pebeo Vitria amzn.to/2ysGxmu

    So, we don't add black to the color that we want to make it darker? We choose some other fitting colors to tone it down? Is there any list of all of it? So, we don't use black to tone it down right? Anyone.

    • @MicheleTheberge
      @MicheleTheberge  4 года назад +1

      You just look across the color wheel. Do you have a color wheel? What I am suggesting here is to always use the colored directly opposite to tone it down. Give it a try! And see what you think. And then compare it with toning it with Black. You can always do it your own way if you like black better! You’re the artist it’s your painting. You make the rules!💪😊

    BIG CLUE, No Color Theory There is a science to color theory what the great masters understood. To admit she does not get into color theory shows her ignorance.

    • @MicheleTheberge
      @MicheleTheberge  4 года назад +2

      Hey Paul! It's funny! I AM actually teaching color theory here. I discuss hue, value, chroma, saturation. I am teaching how to mix, discussing the color wheel and complementary colors. I also know the Munsell Color system which is very rarely taught in the US. In addition I have studied and taught the work of Josef Albers. In my college color lectures I even talked about the electromagnetic spectrum and the visible light. I also teach about the molecular properties of paint and how it affects it's working properties. I LOVE science! I probably take for granted after painting for 40 years that I do use it. But I don't belabor it in my classroom. We all have different approaches to painting and to color mixing.
      In my experience students can get too caught up in theory and fearful of experimenting and trying out their own ideas. It is only by doing this that we are able to innovate. Otherwise we can get stuck retreading others ideas and lose out on the unique qualities and experience only each of us can offer.
      And I cannot agree with you that I am ignorant. I have 3 college degrees - a BA, BFA and an MFA. I love the European painting tradition and have enormously benefited from the study of the works of the great masters. I have had the fortune to see in person more many times some of the greatest examples of European painting at museums all over North America and Europe. Sorry to hear you are feeling the need to be critical of others today. I have spent 10 years sharing my knowledge here on RUclips as a labor of love and I am glad millions of viewers have benefited from what I have shared. If you have a specific question you feel was not answered here, I am always happy to hear! Sending love and positive thoughts your way! Happy painting to you! I hope you find all that you seek.
