I think that is the name of it, I had bounced on Megadeth at that point, saw them in the late 90's with Marty and just wasnt feeling the material at that point. It was UNITED ABOMINATIONS that had me do a huge head turn, " oh my God that's good! Megadeth is back!"

Agreed. Marty was technically great, and a skilled player in his own right, but in terms of a guy that matches the band style and dynamic, the original Megadeth lineup had it all: two jazz guys in Chris and Gar, angry freaking Dave, and his loyal sidekick Dave junior (as he was insultingly referred to at the time). Peace Sells is an utter masterpiece / masterclass in thrash guitar. And SFSGSW was the next phase when they kicked half the junkies out of the band (actually, not sure about Chuck, maybe they traded one for one there?). Rust in Peace is kind of the pinnacle of their technical playing, but the stuff with Chris and Gar, well, swung a little more. And Jeff Young didn't get his due, those solos are freaking good, elevates SFSGSW.

There is a common thread...It's not what you did or accomplished that matters. It's "HOW DID YOU TREAT OTHERS". Saw this tour in New Haven, CT. Savatage, one of my favorite under-rated bands, rocked out but had some sound/PA issues throughout. When they were done, the Oliva brothers came out in street clothes and went to the mixing board, probably to see wtf had been going wrong, then they just walked off up the stairs through the arena with most people not recognizing them. Megadeth came on next and sounded horrible. They were turned up so loud the whole mix was distorted and it was sometimes hard to figure out what song they were playing while Dave seemed to be slurring and muttering the "words". Overall, not a good performance possibly exacerbated by a bad sound guy or equipment issues persisting from the beginning. Dio was top-notch and in his prime, saved the show and didn't seem plagued by the earlier technical difficulties. Still rates as one of my all-time favorite concerts...

It is a shame that many of these guys haven't been able to make (or maintain) peace over the years. For Mustaine's part, it's interesting, because he clearly has over the years reached out to guys and wanted to keep them involved in legacy type stuff. Yet, it ends poorly so often that it can be really hard to know who to believe in all these back and forths. I generally think Dave is honest and has good intentions but 1. Being that he was high so often in the old days, it's def possible his memories are imperfect. 2. He does seem to have some control or jealousy or anger issues. 3. He's kinda forthcoming and honest about his opinions to a fault.
But yeah, Poland, Young, Menza, Ellefson... they've all had ups and downs. But like I said, I still give credit to Dave for the times he has admitted his faults and made some effort to reach out. The very fact that he's actually kinda on better terms w the Metallica guys these days makes me very happy.

I saw them on this tour. As soon as they came out, Mustaine said he had the flu and likely wouldn't be singing the entire time. He apologised blah, blah. Then, since my friends and I were so close to the stage we were practically onstage, we could see backstage. There was just a black curtain up. We say some guy playing guitar back there. Headbanging and the whole 9 yards. Pretty sure it was someone playing Dave's guitar parts. He couldn't have been playing anything else. It was too loud for him to have just been playing for the hell of it. The show overall was horrible. The first band, I don't even know who they were, so I didn't know any of the songs and people were chanting Megadeth the entire time they were out there. Dio was headlining and his show was alright. I'd already saw him a few times by then and I think that he was touring the Sacred Heart album. Actually left early and disappointed. Reflecting on it though, it was a good experience to see them then. That line up was only together for a brief time. Seems like Jeff did well, but I was big into the Poland/Samuelson era. That was my experience with that line up and that tour. Dave didn't lie. He sang some, but spent most of the time just banging his head and facing the drums, and or the direction of the man behind the curtain playing. Saw them in a town full of drugs, I had drugs on me. I have my own band that tours extensively now. Been touring since 1992. I don't understand how you run out of drugs. There's a network to which you can get anything you want. Back when we started, we didn't know and we all had habits of varying degrees, but we learned early to send an advance crew person to get places a day ahead of us and never didn't have dope. Now the people that work the venues can get you sorted as soon as you get into town. Even in Russia and China and some other countries where it's like you get the death penalty for drugs. So I'm not sure if Dave was really ill with flu, or dope sick. I think he may have really had the flu because being dope sick is a million times worse. Can't even get out of bed except you must, because with withdrawal, you're shitting liquid every 5 minutes and vomiting. Sneezing is also one of my more bizarre symptoms, but sneezing 10 times in a row or something. It's awful.

I mean, the best players say hes the best BUT...there's a little thing called creativity, heart and soul and I know and agree Polands solos were above Killer but that one album that Jeff got to show us..SO Far So Good So What...Some of the best soloing Ive ever heard. Its weird though, cos Marty was a step above both of them. Marty was writing solos that were not only memorable but took them off into their own thing. Like a song within a song. Anyway, Chris got to do two albums which doubles the effect and impression we get.

I went to Gigantour in 2005 in Kansas City. It was a bunch of shity bands that would play for like 20 minutes and then it would be like 35 minutes for the next band setup. Then for some reason Overkill is playing at like 4 in the afternoon and completely crushing it for like five songs. Then they're done and the sad thing is a lot of people work out buying merch not even watching the show. I forced my way all the way to the front of the stage and was close enough to high-five Bobby Blitz. There was maybe two or three hundred people there for Overkill. Then when we were done it was a bunch of other shity bands it never went anywhere and then eventually Lamb of God and Megadeth. Lamb of God is okay but who the hell thought it was a good idea to put overkill on in the middle of the day on a Thursday? In my mind Overkill plays an hour and 15 minutes and Megadeth plays an hour and 45 minutes and there's your $75 concert ticket right there. Benefactor in another $75 for a t-shirt or two and maybe a couple of Beverages and some popcorn or maybe a hot dog. You bring your chick to that that's a good night right there
